One of my friends has a glider who says she takes her glider outside for play time. I am kind of jealous because my gliders aren't even to that point. Of course your glider needs to be really bonded to you but how do you know when you are ready to go outside?

I only take my gliders outside when they are in a safe, zippered bonding bag. There is no other safe way to take them outside. There are so many bad things that could happen.

I would say the only way my gliders are gonna get outside is in a bonding pouch or in a tent set up outside. I just could not risk them gliding off and something awful happening to them.

Random thought here lol! But if you were to have say a screen gazebo or something that is a screen tent that is rather large (like for people to enjoy in their lawn chairs) would they be able to play in it? I don't have anything like that but just had a random thought.

Also, how big do tents come for them?

In my opinion, it is dangerous to take sugar gliders outside -- unless they are in some sort of secure enclosure (such as a zippered bonding pouch, a tent, etc).

Even the most bonded gliders actions are not 100% predictable, after all.

This is a tough one too. Many of us see cute photos of gliders in shrubs and wish we could do that too.

First of all, as bonded as my Arwen is, I would NEVER NEVER NEVER take her outside at night. WAYYYY to risky.

As for daytime outside, they really wont enjoy it, as its daytime and they are nocturnal. I have had Arwen outside during the day, but not to play, more just to pick flowers for her. Which she loves. She has never shown an interest in leaving me, and just really wants to stay inside my shirt.

Too many risks having them outside. I mean a stray cat could come wizzing by and hurt them, there could be a slug on the ground they gobble up (and they will) and that slug could have any number of parasites. And what about mosquitoes? What if one bites them? Do they get heartworm???

There could be anything on the bushes you put them in that could be bad. In a tree??? ugh. they get startled and away they go.

She could go to chase a bug, get scared, disoriented, and take off and be gone cry We had a hawk attack our duck within 6-10 feet of us, imagine an owl or hawk swooping down and taking your glider.

Too risky for me.

As for tents. We did buy a HUGE Genji tent just for outside use last year. I never used it, as I was too scared they would somehow break out and be gone.

I agree 100%. The only time my gliders go outside is in a zippered bonding pouch (though I an contemplating doing some warm summer evening playtimes in my tent). smile Just not worth the risk to me! I mean, what do you gain by taking your glider outside to play? Nothing beyond a few cute photo opps, IMO.

At the same time, what do you risk? An escaped glider, predators, parasites... just not worth it!

I agree. The ONLY way I would have play time outside would be in an enclosure that has been glider proofed, then checked 1,000 times over to make sure there is absolutely NO way they could sneak out.

I have a tent that we use as our travel cage. I also use this in the summer time to allow the monkeys to have some outside time in the late afternoon/early evening. They absolutely LOVE the fresh air and watching their little ears grab all the local sounds is adorable. Other than in the tent, there's no way I'd do outside time in an unsecured location.

I think outside in a screened in porch or tent would be ok. Most of those outside tents do NOT have bottoms so I would make sure that you got one with a bottom on it. There are too many risks with a non secure area. Like mentioned, escaping, preditors, parasites, pestisides, ...

I also would never bring Gizzy and Ruthie outside unless they were in a zippered bonding pouch - I trust them, but I don't trust something ELSE outside to startle/scare them or try to eat them and I'd be heartbroken if something happened....no way, no outside time for me....

I wonder if your friend has her glider on one of those "leashes" while outside....if so, these are NOT good for gliders are they can tear their patagium (I hope I spelled that right, I almost never do haha...) and are way too restrictive....

I agree that it is dangerous to bring them outside if they aren't in a zippered pouch. no matter how bonded they are you never know what can scare them to jumping away and getting hurt.

My concern with tents is, it's just a thin layer of mesh between you and a cat or a big dog. Your suggies are running around the mesh, when suddenly a cat attacks them. Not much protection from teeth and claws. A big dog could tear through the mesh.

I prefer to stay inside, where there enough risks to turn my hair gray! LOL!

I wouldn't worry too much about preditors in a tent outside because it would be in my backyard that is fenced and I would be in the tent. I honestly won't ever take mine outside, but I just don't see that as being an issue in my yard, esp. if I am right there in the tent. I dunno. I don't really favor the idea of sitting outside in the dark in a tent unless I am camping somewhere.
