I am preparing for my USDA license and getting ready for the vet to do his home visit. I know the vet will need to do fecals but is it only on the gliders or all the animals in my home??? (I also have 2 dogs, a ferret, 2 guinea pigs, & a conure)
Anyone?

The USDA requires ALL animals that are in the breeding kennel and are being bred to sell their babies be vet examined and fecal-ed.. For example I have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 breeding gerbils, 6 breeding gliders, and 6 breeding female hedgehogs and 5 stud male hedgehogs. When my vet comes to do my inspection he does exams and fecal-ed on ALL breeding animals/stud animals as that is what the license requires. So unless you are breeding and selling their children then your dogs/ferrets/gp/conure should NOT be counted. Now if you are breeding and selling any of them then yes you vet should exam and fecal them as they WILL count under the license. Hopefully that makes since?

Ok, so it IS only the gliders that need to be done as they are the only ones breed... My 2 dogs, ferret, 2 guinea pigs, & conure are only pets; nonbreeding.

The inspector may look at them if they happen to meet them on the way in, but your inspection won't be based on the other animals.

hmmm....question.....so what about my snakes? usually it is not required to be licensed to breed snakes but they are in my home....(in another room, they have their own heated room).....if i try to get a usda license for my sugar gliders then i have to have a vet come and inspect all 50 plus snakes i have as well? thats going to be expensive...

So my vet finally called me back....
He says any animals that share the same air as the gliders need to also get fecals.

So this is what they told me
$150 for him to ring my door bell.
PLUS $94 per hour for him to full inspect my entire house, food, water, cages, everything... etc
PLUS $33 per fecal (7 gliders, 2 cats, 2 dogs, a ferret, 2 guinea pigs, & a bird)
=$645 + $94 per hour

And I am supposed to do this annually???
I don't even make that much from my joeys sales!!!!

Shouldn't our tax dollars already be going to fund the USDA? wink

That isn't even including the ACTUAL USDA licence! That is just for my vet to do the home visit for the USDA!!!

You shouldn't have to get fecals on your other animals. I think your vet is just trying to find a way to make a little extra $. Your inspector should only be looking at the vet records of the animals your getting a license for. Everything else is irrelevant.

I agree, you should call around to other vets to see what they charge for it. That seems outrageous.

Our vet only charges/conducts fecals on our gliders and we have other animals sharing living space with the them. I don't know anyone that has needed to get all their animals fecaled for a USDA license for gliders....

AGREE!

Unless the actual USDA inspector tells you otherwise, I would not get a fecal on your other NON-breeding pets. Your vet does not have the authority to require you to fecal your other animals as well. Defiantly check into some other vets or only allow your vet to fecal your 7 breeding gliders.

Hope this advice isn't too late!
