I wouldnt be able to stomach it. To me that would be like feeding sugar glider joeys to my cats. But there are people that have done it, and the mice do have lots of babies per litter, and they have a lot of litters every year.

I have never thought about doing this as I don't feed pinkies. But I'm sure someone around here will have some advice on it.

I guess you'd at least know that you are feeding the mice a good quality food if that were to make a difference or not

I don't know if I would ever be able to feed gliders the pinkies. It would seem like feeding them a baby joey. But if you are going to raise them for food, you have to take into consideration the costs of caring for the mice as well: cage, bedding, food, and so on.

Another thing is getting attached to them. You might just end up with a cage full of mice too.

There is a very big difference between pinkies and joeys. Pinkies are commonly fed to pregnant females as an extra protien and calcium source.

I raise my own pinkies to feed to my beardies. Since the closest pet shop is about 30 minutes away and they charge $1.99-$2.99 per pinky, it works out really well financially for me. Right now I have a quad of mice (3 males, 1 female). My female just had babies too, 8 of them Mice are really easy to raise and very inexpencive to keep. I keep mine is a 10 gallon aquarium. They have a water bottle, a wheel, and a couple toys that I use for my gliders. For food, I use a premixed hamster food, then I add dried fruits to it. I also give them fresh fruits and veggies as well. In reality you can feed them whatever you feed gliders. They even like mealies... It cost me about $10 a month to keep my mice, the females can have babies about ever 22 days, and my mice have had litters ranging from 7-18 pinkies.

Almost two months ago, my husband and I bought a 10-gallon aquarium, bedding, 2 female and 1 male mice and other necessities and set them up. It would be a while before we see any pinkies, as our mice are still a little young.

I have no qualms with removing the pinkies from the moms and feeding them to gliders, because I know the pinkies are good for the gliders. My love for gliders is much stronger than for the mice.

Yup, you sure could do it, but if you're worried about saving money, it's not worth it. The amount of smell mice give off is nasty, and the food cost alone to keep them housed will be more than the cost of 5 pinkies you get at the store. Also, a pair would only breed about once a month and will bear about on average 7 pinkies.

If you are freezing pinkies, the best place to buy them are places like reptile websites such as kingsnake.com or google rodent breeders.

I get mine (for reptiles) at reptile shows for as cheap as 19 cents a piece. If you choose to go over the net to buy, the shipping isn't bad either.

I try to feed the pinkies to my gliders/beardie before they are a week old. I'll leave them with their parents until I feed them...

If you plan on feeding them live then go by Leynas advice. If not and you are going to freeze them it depends on what stage you want them to get. Pinkies are generally about one day old and have not developed any fur yet. Then there are fuzzies which are older and have fur and better developed bones.

Usually if you are freezing them, you should pull as newborns (1 or 2 days old). If you want them to be a little bigger, I'd say a week.

If anyone needs help finding frozen pinkies, let me know. We currently have 70+ frozen pinkies in our freezer that we got for 19 cents each.

This is such a sad topic (but I completely understand it... I feed pinkies also.) Anyway if you are going to pull the pinkies make sure they have nursed from their mom or else they won't have much nutrional value.

Just so you know, it is far more benificial to freeze your pinkies first, then feed them, because of parasites. I'm sure you can worm your mice, but that may have adverse effects on the gliders. Freesing them effectively kills all parasites and turns them protien.

I just googled pinkies, and noticed one that was fairly inexpensive for smaller quantities. Don't know how it is, and I don't feed them, but it seems ok. www.micedirect.com
