Personally I wouldn't feed anything from outside. The risk of something dangerous being on them is too high for me

Okay, I have a great way of doing this. I learned about it at the SGGA. I bought a small mesh laundry thingy at Lowes. It is a cylinder that pops up and has a zippered lid so it's really like a small reptarium (which would also work, by the way but this laundry thing was only like $10 or 15). So you catch your man o wars or june bugs or moths and put them in the laundry thingy and then let the gliders loose in there to hunt their prey! It's so funny to watch them stalk and attack! As for the risk of outdoor bugs having pesticides on them, if I lived in an apartment, I probably wouldnt' catch wild bugs from around the porch light. As it is, I won't feed bugs like roaches that normally crawl around on the ground where pesticide is usually placed. But I live in a house with a decent sized yard and we haven't had an exterminator out in over 5 years, so with flying insects, I feel "safe enough" feeding them occasionally. There truly is a benefit because I feel that they need some variety of insects since mealies are so high in fat. My vet has encouraged me to catch bugs for them under these guidelines. Also, there is the psychological benefit of them getting to hunt just a little.

Great idea peeper!! Yes, my vet encouraged me to get a butterfly net and do a sweeping around the porch. No crawling insects.

I've been feeding my gliders wild bugs for years with no problem. They go nuts for grasshoppers, moths, and drone honeybees (the latter procured at some risk to myself; the drones can't sting, but the workers sure can!) Just watch your fingers if you handfeed! Darcy is pretty careful, but he's in the minority. --Pesticides aside, ALL wild critters have parasites, which might be passed on to whomever eats them. But, that said, none of my gliders have ever had a fecal test positive for parasites. My vet's advice: "A small amount of a large variety."

I won't feed my gliders any "wild" bugs but that’s only because I live on a farm and in any area where a lot of pesticides are used. If you live no where near these dangers I think it should be fine to feed some bugs you find in your yard.
Although it can be more risky b/c of parasites etc. bugs raised in a pet shop can still have many problems that could effect your gliders so there is still always some risk. If the average person eats, I think it is, 8 spiders a year in their sleep who’s to say that bugs won't make their way into your sugar gliders cage?
