I moved my trio into their own room, thinking it might help the breeding situation because they're on the other side of the house as my glider room now.

I don't know if it's because they're in a new room or what but they've begun seriously fussing at each other.

I thought it was BooBoo and Mercedes at first, so I put Mercedes in a separate cage for one night. I didn't hear fighting. I put her back, they slept all day and started fussing again that night. I removed Mercedes again and have been putting her in a separate cage at night and back with BooBoo and Dewy during the day.

Well, last night, I heard even more serious fussing. Only this time, it was BooBoo and Dewy!!! I brought BooBoo in my room, laid down with her on my chest and she slept with me petting her, for a couple of hours. She woke up and wanted to go explore so I put her back with Dewy. I had barely left the room when they started really I-mean-it! fussing! So I put BooBoo in with Mercedes and they did just fine. Not one fuss from either of them all night!

What's going on??? Any suggestions?

Our girls do that when Papa thinks they need to be in heat lol he will try messing with them and they fuss like that and smack him and he ends up in another pouch.

Whatwas up with gliders last night? My 2 females were seriously fussing with each other too. DC Muffin suggested a heat cycle. Scared me to death because my babies rarely crab at all and it sounded like WWIII in their cage last night until I seperated them!

I'm wondering if it has to do with weather?? Or maybe the sense the tad bit of tension with Thanksgiving preparations..? Dunno.
Elodie has been a bit moody. Normally she likes cuddling and is REALLY loving but last night/this morning whenever Jack OR Jynx tried cuddling and loving on her she'd give them the (verbal) third degree. She's been fine for the last 3 hours though. lol

Maybe it is their heat cycle? The girls might just be a little extra moody and don't want to be bother. I know when one of my females will go into heat and she's not "in the mood", she and her cage mate will fight like crazy! It's even come to the point of separation before.

They've been together 16 months and have never fought before. They've both had joeys. I guess I'll separate them each time they start to seriously fuss. I don't want to separate them permanently. But I don't want them to be unhappy or hurt each other either. I sure didn't think this would happen. frown

I understand that you don't want to separate them, I've had to do the same thing. It's a last resort for me, but I have been forced to a couple times. It's never any longer than a day or two.

When I first put Sadie and Pip together, they never fought at all. They had 2 different sets of twins before they even thought about fighting. And then one day it just happened. I didn't know what was up, but then I realized this was only happening when she was going into heat and didn't want to be messed with.

Of course, I'm not this this is for sure what's going on with your babies, but it sounds similar to what I've experienced. tounge

For the next night, maybe two, I'm keeping the girls separated from Dewy. I just can't take the chance one of them would of them get hurt. I wish I'd never attempted a breeding trio. I'm really worried now. frown

You're a brave soul for trying a trio. I've contemplated having a trio, but backed out.

I really hope all the fighting stops. I know how heartbreaking it can be to watch your babies fight so much and then have to worry about them getting hurt in the process. Hopefully all of this will resolve itself and all will be back to normal in a day or two. hug2

Wait, having a trio can be bad?????

I'm sure it is just them not "feeling well" such as that time of the month and etc.

Sometimes trios, especially breeding trios just don't work. Colony dynamics can and often do change and can change gradually or drastically like they just woke up one day and decided they don't like their room mates. Mix in hormones from breeding and it can hit the fan and sometimes very badly.

I'm hoping that Connie's gliders figure out they all do love each other. But if not, then hard choices may need to be made as to who to separate from who.

I'm going to try leaving the girls with Dewy tonight. I've been putting the girls in a separate cage at night and letting them sleep together during the day. Miss BooBoo and Dewy spend half an hour marking each other but poor Mercedes just acts like she's scared and prefers to be in my shirt. It's so heartbreaking to think I may have to separate them. I never wanted to. That's why I was going to have Dewy neutered. I'll never try another trio. I feel like I've failed my babies by putting them together. frown

i dont know why yours are acting up

but mine recently started acting odd b/c of a change in their environment (albeit a very small one)

their cage is out in the hall, well my dad cleaned the hall and re-aranged some stuff. he moved the cage to the other side of the hall and over a few feet so they were almost in the same exact place, just looking at the opposite wall(the same one they were up against the night before)

well they were acting funny-- not getting up at their regular times, barking to wake me up SEVERAL times a night(usualy they only do that once or twice a week), eating almost no food(over half their food was left on the plate every morning)

well this was happening for a few days and i was starting to get very concerned, was about to schedule a vet appointment b/c i figured they must have gotten sick from something, although they looked fine, no weight loss, bright eyes, no discharge or breathing problems.

the only thing that had changed was the cage being moved, so i decided i would move the cage back and if that didn't help, it was off to the vet.

and the next morning when i woke up their plate was almost licked clean haha they just didn't like their cage being moved that little but for some strange reason.

Do you have any incents near the cage or plug ins? i made that mistake and it was a giant fight with everbody in the cage, they fussed all night till i moved it. also consider getting your male nuetered if the problem persists. My female has recently become food agressive and wont let her hubby eat off the same plate as her. Maybe try putting in three seperate feeding stations, if its happening while there eating. Just some suggestions. good luck ;p

When did you move them in relation to when they started fussing at each other? Could the new room have stressed them? If so, then taking the females in and out could be causing additional stress.

Maybe try moving them back where they were to see if that calms them down?

Of course if its be a few days and it was a heat cycle causing this, you won't know that until next cycle (if she's not pregnant).

It sure sounds like someone is in heat. We just finished two weeks of fussing, noisemaking, and pouch switching. We have three females and one male, and the three girls go into heat at different times. We know when our two older females are in heat - they tend to bark at 30 sec intervals throughout the day when they are.

I don't use incense, candles or air fresheners in my home.

They have never fought before now. I moved them into their own room because there were so many other gliders in their original room. I thought that may have been the reason why they pulled joeys.

I have several feeding stations, so there's no issue with food aggression.

I had them separated until Thanksgiving. That night, I put them back together. They've gotten along great since then. Not a single disagreement.

This morning, when I did my body check, there were no joey bumps. About half an hour ago, BOTH girls had one joey bump the size of a mini M&M.

I'm wondering, do gliders get "in sync" with each others' heat cycles like human women?

If the joeys are successful, I will probably still either have Dewy neutered or if they become aggressive again, I'll pull one of the girls and get another male.

I've been told since I asked, that females do indeed, have their heat cycles in sync. I'm hoping if they keep their cycles together, they'll become the happy, successful breeding trio I hoped for!

It's gonna be a loooooong 10 weeks!

My females that are all in the same room together all come into heat within days of each other. The females with neutered mates drive me insane with their barking. It riles up the poor males in other cages too.

Sadly, when I checked Mercedes this morning, her baby bump was gone. cry I blame myself for trying to have a breeding trio without doing more research first. My poor Mercedes. cry

I can only hope and pray Miss BooBoo doesn't lose her baby bump too.

It's heartbreaking. I realized after I made them a trio, that I hadn't done enough research. I've learned a lot since then and discovered my attempts at a trio were pretty much against being successful, with the way I tried.

Please, I know we say it all the time, but it's so true. Do as much research as humanly possible for as long as possible, before breeding. I only researched trios for a few months. It should have been a year or two. My baby girls and their babies, paid the price for my lack of knowledge.

Connie, don't blame yourself. Trios are so unpredictable. I have had breeding colonies, breeding trios, breeding quads (one male, three females).

So far, I've had success with breeding colonies where it is mom, dad and neutered boy offspring. And my colony that started off as a trio, dad, twin sisters and then having their boys neutered.

But with Viking, Joy and Charity, I was so incredibly nervous about it. It took a LOT of convincing me to even give it a try. I got VERY lucky and they are doing great. They have been TOO successful! Viking is going to be getting neutered as soon as I have the funds. Trios make LOTS of babies!

But even family colonies where all males are neutered don't always work. My first colony did FANTASTIC for the first 4-5 years and then just started blowing apart.

You can't put your human emotions for babies onto animals. They don't react the same as we do to the loss of a joey. And you certainly can't blame yourself. Those gliders KNOW they are loved. I KNOW you will do what ever is needed to make sure they are all happy. Give yourself a break and don't beat yourself up over this.

Thank you Teresa, but I still say I didn't do enough research and no, I'll never forgive myself for that.

I know enough now, to know that I'll never try it again, considering the odds are too risky for what I can handle.

You've told me before that gliders don't have our human emotions but I still worry. If she was stressed enough to pull the baby, it seems she would grieve over it too. I know they grieve over the loss of a cage mate. Is it different when it's a 2-3 week IP joey?

I just wanted to say I am sorry for what happened. Sometimes we can't predict that stuff.

Thank you all. I must have checked Miss BooBoo's baby bump twenty times today, to make sure it's still there. And I've checked Mercedes' tummy several times, to make sure the baby wasn't pushed to the back.

I've given Mercedes a lot of special attention today. It may not make her feel better, but it helped me.

I hope if Mercedes gets pregnant in a few months by Beau, it'll be a successful pregnancy. If not, I'll just have him neutered. They get along so well. No crabbing, psssting, chasing, etc. They're a perfect match. It makes me feel good to see them so happy together.
