Many people seem to have a million and one excuses about why it is really ok to own illegal animals in certain states. "Everyone does around here." "They don't really enforce the laws." "No one is going to know."

Just an example of what CAN and DOES happen. Eight gliders "seized" - probably means 8 gliders euthanized.

Quote:
Prosecutors say a Hollywood woman has been charged with multiple criminal counts for trying to sell exotic animals from Australia on Facebook.

The Los Angeles city attorney's office said Tuesday that 39-year-old Amy Young Lynn is charged with eight counts of unlawful possession and offering for sale a restricted species.

Lynn is accused of breeding Sugar Gliders, a small flying mammal that looks similar to a squirrel, and advertising them on Facebook for $400 per pair. Undercover officers responding to her ad confiscated eight of the animals.

Prosecutors say Lynn told authorities she'd been given a pair of the animals at a party and they had reproduced.

She could face up to four years in jail and an $8,000 fine if convicted.

I've got two cages of rescues - one from Fairfax Co, VA and the other from Prince William Co., VA. Let's face it, there are many people in these two counties with gliders and one cage from each sounds like nothing. But...these gliders were confiscated because in one case, a family was turned in by another because the glider owners daughter was talking with her friend about them and how cute they were. The friend's family, being lawful and abiding, turned them in. The second cage came because a family had a complaint about a barking dog. When animal control got there, there was the glider cage. In both cases, animal control removed the gliders immediately. Taken out of the comfort of their home. Thankfully, they are in my home where they are getting much love and attention, but sadly, this isn't always the case.

What people don't understand is that you CAN be caught. It DOES happen and every day it does and you have gliders in an illegal area, count yourself lucky that you still have them. But don't ever take it for granted because the next day, it could happen to you, too.

How sad this is and even more so that authorities are so mis-informed about how wonderful these little guys are. Yet people can have dangerous animals and no one says a thing.

I am originally from Southern California and in November we discussed moving back to California. We were also considering owning Sugar Gliders during that time and I knew that they were illegal in California. When my children heard about this they said "We can't move to California because it's illegal to have sugar gliders there" So now that we are waiting our 2 bundles of joy, I told my family recently that we won't be moving back to Cali after all.

Speaking of which, is there any way of the 8 being sent to rescues versus being euthanized. Or I wonder if there is any way of finding out what will become of them? It's so sad. frown

The article TinaPa posted says they were taken to a wildlife preserve. I hope that is correct.
