Hello all...Im a newbie and have several post, and probably will everyday..lol...until I figure out what I am doing. Question..my gliders (had for 4 days) have been eating very well. I am hand feeding them meal worms, and licky treats every day, along with the BML diet. 2 things...Can you over feed them? Because right now that seems to be the only way I can interact with them is with food, and also do they not drink alot of water out of the watering tubes? I am noticing only about 1/8 of an inch missing by morning..doesn't seem like very much at all and I do not know if this is normal?
Thanks,
Letreze

Post away honey, that's how we all learn! The water sounds normal - sometimes I swear my kids aren't drinking anything until I hear the little ball going! One colony drinks their water about 3 times as fast as the other colony too, so I believe it depends on your glider as well. As far as overfeeding, I think you're doing fine for now. Gliders can become overweight, but it's a slow process - you just need to monitor their weight maybe bimonthly (get a little digital postal scale from Walmart) and adjust your "treat schedule" accordingly if they begin to become over their ideal weight range.

I give my gliders Nutri Glider which is a powder that has Acia gum in it that you mix with fruit juice and they really like that and I don't see them drinking as much water. It will also depend on the food you feed them too. If you give them watermelon and grapes they will get a lot of their water from that. Please continue to provide water but they won't drink from their bottle every day. I hear mine every now and then doing it.

Welcome!!!
I always have a fresh water tube and a juice tube in my cage.
They love nectar, guava and all sorts of real juices. I see them drink water sometimes but their always drinking their juices it is usually gone by morning. I just put a little bit in, but like 603515 said feed them stuff like watermelon, mine love to eat grapes but the leave the skin.. sounds like your doing a great job.

When I put their juice in it is usually gone by the monring. Gliders don't eat grapes they masticate it and get the juice out of it and spit out the pulp. That is why the skin is left. This is also why gliders don't drink a lot of water as they get it from the mastication process. We still need to provide it. The bottle I used to put in their cage had a larger water spout (as it was more for birds) the gliders would use it to dunk their food in and by the morning the water was really gross.

I found a lix it glass water bottle and I love it because it is glass and can be sterilized!!

First of all, welcome!

K & K seem to not need much water, except maybe a few sips a day. They get a lot of moisture from their fruits, from their apple juice etc.

Don't panic, but make sure that your bottles are working (Gently touch the ball in the mouth piece, and see if a drop comes out) just in case! Better to be safe than sorry!

I worried so much when I brought Inca home, because for the first couple days I was sure she wasn't drinking. I stayed up all night and watched her intently, then realised that getting a drink was the first thing she did when she woke up, but she was incredibly quiet with the ball, because she pretty much just sticks her nose in the tube! All that worry for nothing! She gets alot of moisture from her fruit, especially because I freeze it, then when it defrosts she drinks all of the fruit juices that drip out!

Don't worry, as long as the water's going down a touch every night, I'm sure she's drinking. If you really need to settle your mind, draw a little pen mark on the water bottle before they wake up and check on it after they go to bed, and I'm sure it'll have gone down.

Oh! And welcome to GC!

Welcome to GC. You should always have fresh water for your sugar gliders. Just make sure it goes down a lil every nite and make sure your water bottle is working

I make sure that my glider has not only fresh water in his water bottle but also in a dish next to his food. It is on the top shelf of his cage so nothing yucky gets into it. Like everyone else has said they do get a lot of moisture from their food so don't worry if they only drink a little bit. My little guy only takes a small drink when he has been playing really hard and needs the extra water. good luck and don't feel silly about asking any type of question. after all how do you learn if you don't ask.

Yes, gliders are sap suckers, and get a lot of moisture from the foods they eat. (That's why dry, hard, pelleted foods aren't the best.) You'll get to know your gliders and how much they seem to drink. Pay attention to their behaviors, because if you then notice down the road that they seem to be drinking an excessive amount, it's time to visit a vet.

And it's a good idea to have a back-up water supply (a second water bottle or other container). Bottles have been known to leak or break.

Ok
Mealworms cause a glider to drink more water. Gliders will drink less water in the winter than summer. Check your bottles often. Sometimes we don't quite get the seal right when we put it back and it leaks all out.
