My wife said she heard somewhere that you can put a small stuffed animal in with a lone glider. Does any one have a picture of one they use? I want to get one that is safe.
And it just goes into the sleeping pouch with him? (were working on getting him a cage mate so this will only be temporary)

I adopted one of my first joeys to a couple who had a single glider who hugged his little stuffed animal every night as he went to sleep in his pouch. They thought it was equal parts adorable and sad, and I think that's what spurred them to get onto the internet and realize that sugar gliders do better with companions.

Now I've been told he pays that stuffie no mind, now that he has a real, live playmate. smile

Unfortunately I haven't a clue which exact animal they used. You will want something that is pretty small, preferably made out of fleece or another fabric that isn't likely to catch nails, no strings/yarn (like a mane on a stuffed pony), absolutely no terrycloth like I've seen on some baby toys. A tall order, I know! I would go somewhere in person and just look around their stuffed animal department, touching things and examining them. Also don't rule out something like a tiny little finger puppet.

Maybe some sort of beanie baby would be good. They can snuggle and the fur (fabric) (usually) is a close knit so no snagged nails. As mentioned above be careful when choosing as to not get long fur such as manes.

With Doodle and a few other gliders I have had come to me alone / sick, I used small keyring pets. I clip all of the noses and toes off (strings making it look like there are toes) and I clip the keyring part off. They snuggle with them, and yes it is adorable, but you do want to be sure they have another of their own in there, instead of a stuffed animal.

I have the brown cow, the frog and a pig. wink

My little Elfie had a stuffed moose she snuggled with at her rescue home. It was about the same size as she is. She has a buddy now, so she doesn't need him anymore.

I would recommend however not to put the stuffed animal in a pouch, Elfie was in a Monkeycliner (DCMuffin makes them) or an open environment pouch. I would be afraid to have it down in the pouch because of the nails getting caught or it will absorb odors and liquids...

Just a thought...

when we rescued mazu she had a small stuffed bear she was atached to. then when papa came to be her cage mate the bear was found on the ground and i took it away..thai had a beanie baby bat made into a pouch. he whould groom it and sleep in the wings untill his cage mate eclipse made him snuggle to her..i have an older male now with a little stuffed horse,he grooms the main.

stuffed animals dont always work with my rescues. but if it works they have them...always give a lone glider extra love and atention..and always rember gliders do better in pairs...

I have used very small stuffed animals for lone gliders until they get cagemates or become uninterested in them. I always check for no glass or plastic eyes or other items that could be pulled off. I have had a pink elephant, a dog, and one other one I can't remember right now. They would stay in the floor of the kennel and during tent time on the floor of the tent. It is so cute to watch them wrestle with the tiny stuffed animals.

If the stuffed animal has a bit of fuzzy or hair to the fur I make sure it is short and I tug on just a bit to see if a lot of the "hair" comes out. I'm sure the store clerks appreciate me "trying to pull the fur off their stuffed animals".

Yep...little Elfie was a lone glider and was getting a little lonely. So, I went out and found a small stuffed moose that was the perfect size. She snuggled up underneath him every day. mlove Another rescue that was here slept with a small frog - watching him hug it was just adorable. I do think they can alleviate some stress and loneliness, but they still aren't a good replacement altogether. Always make sure you check the animal every single day for loose threads, strings or anything else that may damaged.

i bought two purple squirrels from starbucks (they were originally tree ornaments, haha) after christmas, just because they looked like my babies...but my girls are scared of them! i put them in their ball pit in tent time, but if i take it out and leave it on the floor they do the snakey tail butt shake at it.... they are about the same size as my girls, and look very simliar (except in color LOL) so i think theyre confused as to why the purple gilders dont move or talk...hahaha.

so..maybe stay away from stuffed animals that look like them!
