I went to check on my sugar gliders yesterday and found my male on the bottom of the cage, clutching a bar in each foot. I managed to pry him off the bottom of the cage and call the vet for an emergency visit.

I rushed him to the hospital and the vet took him back immediately and came out to say she wanted x-rays because his abdomen was very distended. I agreed and started home. (We had discussed on the phone that he would need hospitalization regardless and I was a right mess.)

Less than ten minutes later I got a call that the x-rays had come back and shown a distended belly but that Kero had just passed away. I headed back and the vet did a necropsy. Kero's stomach had twisted. (Like you might see in a great dane or other large breed dog.)

She still has him so she and a pathologist can take some samples and see if they can figure out how this happened, since neither of them has ever heard of a glider getting a twisted stomach before.

Kero had been fine the night before.

RIP Dameon, Ember, Mia and Kero

I'm sorry no one has responded to you yet and I'm sorry, also, to hear about the loss of your glider.

Hopefully, you've gotten some answers in the necropsy. I would also recommend talking with Val (Jackie_Chans_Mom). She runs The SUGAR Group, an organization dedicated to glider research. She may be interested to hear the results of the necropsy and would probably also like to talk with you further about any other details.

Crickett, I'm just DEVASTATED to hear of your loss! cry cry

It's entirely possible that it's a genetic defect that has been there forever....and just decided to rear its ugly head now.

Regardless, hug2 hug2 to you.

Crickett, I am soory to hear about Kero. How old was he? Did he have any change in diet lately? I don't know if this has any thing to do with his illness, but I do know diet changes affect many animals negatively.

I am so sorry for your loss hug2 .

Please contact Val so she can add your suggies information to the research, to help save other babies. Thank you for having a necropsy done. Necropsies have saved so many babies.

Your baby is now in a place where there is an endless supply of mealies, treats, and wonderful things to eat.

Thank you everyone for your sympathy I will most definitely contact Val when Dr. Lennox calls me back to let me know they are done with Kero so I can have him cremated.

He was fine the night before like I mentioned and there was no diet change. Dr. Lennox and I (I have degree in vet. Tech, but my primary focus was on dogs and cats) think this was something like bloat in large dogs. Once the stomach twists, you have a matter of one to two hours to try a surgery that tends to be risky in a dog.
{Edit: Was supposed to say- 'a surgery that tends to be risky in a dog, let alone a sugar glider.'}

I had no idea it could happen to a glider. I owned a large dog before and it was always a concern. Even with a mid size dog it is possible to happen but glider?

So sorry for your loss :(((((
