I have gone through the toxic cage thing back in 2009. Since then I have looked for stainless steele caging wire. The price tag attached to such wire was enormous even the stainless steele made in China. For example, a 3ft x 3ft x 2ft worth of wire mesh was $400 for the Chinese wire. I didn't want Chinese wire and asked for wire made in the US or any other country with which we don't have such a large trade deficit with. The quote I got for such wire was $780 for the aforementioned size. WOW! Unexceptable! I talked to my vet who posted an inquiry to his contacts and the same day there was a response. A place here in Arizona who has been making cages for Zoos all over the world since 1978. For the same 3x3x2 size for stainless steele wire made in the US and England, welded with safe materials....... price.....$93! $93 vs $780. I jumped all over that and ordered a larger sizes.
They are called A to Z and they are based out of Tucson AZ. They will make any cage size and design you want, ship it flat with directions on how to assemble. They have a web site, www.athruzcages.com and the number is (520) 434-8281.

Thank you for posting this. I don't remember if I told you this before but I did buy some SS wire to build a large stacked cage after I tossed out the pvc coated garbage. The wire alone ran me $500. I will definitely call A to Z and get a price. I love the SS cage I already have. I was planning to order another flimsy stacked cage temporarily until I could get more wire. Looks like I won't need to.

And thanks again for the help you provided to me and my gliders last year while we went through everything. I lost all of the retired breeding females that were exposed but the males are still going strong.

Did you get your cage from a thru z? I looked at their website and contacted them just wondering if someone has had experience with one of their cages?

Yes I did. I got a 4ft x 3ft x2ft with a shelf and a door, c hooks and the crimping tool for $198. It's the 16g 1 by 1/2 inch wire. The size I got does not need a frame, but it would make it look more finished. Sean is going to get back to me with the cost for that, and a stand. I'm getting 1 more that size and 1 a foot taller. I'm quite pleased. I didn't like the bird cages, the wire is parallel and too thin, and more costly. I was frustrated and I'm so glad A to Z was recommend.

I have a question here so is the stainless steel better than the galvantized just wanting to make sure here as I know gliders are not suppose to be in galvanized that why most people went with pvc and yes I remember the issue with that wire. Although I think it was just that era because I have a pvc cage that I have had for years and years with no issue what so ever do I think pvc coated is safe that is still a question I think if you have a good source to get it from the probably but would I just trust anyone NOOOOO I just havent heard much about stainless steel with glider pee and the reactions so just curious

I've had my ss cage for well over 6 months now and have had no issues whatsoever. The company I bought my wire from did tell me to scrub it before I put gliders in it due to an oil that's put on it during processing. No illnesses and no worries about rusting. There are 6 gliders in the cage.

Kittybaren- thanks for posting about the wire a SS cage would be great, and the pricing is awesome:) My only concern is I looked at their web-site and couldn't find any 1/2 inch wire. You posted that you got 1 by 1/2 inch wire, can't they get out of that?

Awesome cages Bobbi:) So you don't have any problems with them getting out of the 1 by 1/2 inch wire? What did you use as the drop tray?

Thanks. My second one will look just like that one. smile Nope, no problems at all. There are 4 gliders in the top and 2 in the bottom. My smallest glider in that cage is about 90 grams. There's no way he can get out. I bought those trays from Klubertanz when I bought my pvc coated wire. Needless to say the pvc coated wire is now garbage but the trays were still useable. They're really nice trays too. Very easy to clean compared to the ones you usually get with premade cages. And they're deep so my bottom scavengers can't reach the tray. smile

so there are no issues with toxicity and stainless steel is completely safe? It would be great to be able to build cages again!

No problems with ss that I'm aware of. I've been using mine since July last year so if there were a problem I'm thinking I would have seen it by now. It's just a little more expensive. Heidi, I'll go read it now.

Here's a couple more pictures. The full cage picture shows the plastic edging things around the doors. Another picture is Pugsley who wanted to say "Hi, I'm a healthy looking boy!". The other picture shows a closer view of the door edges and that's Goober (Gomez) who is the smallest glider in that cage.

When you order the cage how does it come? What assembly is required?

I hate to be the dissenting voice here but when I went to the site I didn't see any stainless steel in anything other than the different woven types of mesh. All the welded wire mesh is GAW, Galvanized After Welding. Just thought I'd bring it up for your attention. Unless they offer it as an option, I didn't see it listed. Bright drawn mild steel might look like stainless but it isn't the same thing. If you want to be sure you're getting stainless and not something coated take a magnet to it. Magnets won't stick to stainless steel.

I haven't even checked out A to Z's website yet. I hope it just isn't listed. My wire came from TWP and is ss.

Luna's Mom 1" x 1/2" size openings are perfectly safe - the key is the narrowest distance between wires in any opening is 1/2 inch or less.

Most bird cages we use have 1/2" x 4 inch openings.

Yes they do have stainless steele 1in x 1/2 inch. A to Z can make the cage with a bottom pan, a frame if you want and a stand. Stainless steele is safe, this wire is not coated it is stainless steele through and through. I have never gone to the web site I just called them up and talked with the owner. He did say that they are revamping their web site and maybe that is one of the changes.

Mine is definitely ss and I was assured it was made in the US. I would have to pull my receipt but I paid $500 for the wire you see in the picture. I bought it in a roll. I will call A to Z tomorrow or Monday. smile

Thanks Jess! It isn't any harder than building the pvc coated ones. Cutting the wire is the hardest part in my opinion. My hands get tired. lol I didn't have a chance to call that company yet but will definitely do it tomorrow. Cage cleaning was more important today. smile

How nice of Pugsley to greet us!

Is your cage a one piece double stack or did you stack one on top of the other?

and btw, I love that treadmill! Looks like it is being "WELL" used!

It's 1 piece in the back and on the sides. We just left open areas in the front to fit the trays. I made sure it was built to fit through my doors so I could get it outside. It's on wheels. The overall height is about 7'. The trays are 2" deep I think.

Noticed those spots on it did ya? hehe It does get used a lot by one of the gliders in that cage. The other 3 don't use it much. 2 of them will get it going a little then lose interest. My 222g girl is who I really bought it for and she just walks on it. I have yet to find anything that holds her interest enough to exercise. She used to be a wheel hog but once she started gaining weight she was done. She walks in that too.

I have a call in to this company. They are working up a price including shipping and will get back to me. The wire IS stainless steel and it's made in the US.

Yes they do sell it. Kitty mentioned above that she bought a cage from them. I called this week and they still haven't gotten back with me on a price. I requested pricing for a roll.

This wire is made in the US.

I am looking at building a stainless steel cage. from the looks of it im going to have to buy a 100ft roll so ill have tons left over

its not the cheapest material but you never have to worry about it rusting or paint chipping or the toxic pvc

ill be shopping around for the next few days to find the best place to order from and ill post pics of the cage i build as soon as its done
