Okay..so they said to leave her alone for two days to get used to her surroundings...so yesterday was the first day I went to remove her from her cage and pocket bond her....she freaked out and everytime she makes that noise it scares the [censored] out of me....i finally got a hold of her but had to wear TWO pairs of gardening gloves just to keep her from shredding my hand. Well today she's just [censored] off....I put her in the pocket and she's just upset...I have to wear a padded bra just so she won't take a chunk out of my chest...are there things I can do to speed up the bonding process and make her feel more comfortable with me because right now it's just distressing to both of us...I'm not good with rejection.

you may want to start out with a bonding pouch you can leave in her cage, don't pull it out till she is sleeping, zip it up, and voila! bonding time begins. You can also wear a tshirt for a couple of nights, without washing it, and drape it over her cage, so she can get used to your scent...cut up some little fleece strips, and wear them for a couple of days, and then stick them in the pouch.. You don't want to grab her or force her, it will only hurt your bonding process, remember she is scared, you are a giant in her little world... Good luck, have patience and take it slow!!

So about how long will it be before I can touch her without gloves...it's frustrating because the gloves smell totally different than me....so shoud i just not hold her at all? I know I need to spend as much time with her as possible and I also want to touch her without her taking a chunk out of me...i just don't know what signs to look for that she's comfortable with me....she just keeps yelling at me

Try not to just grab her, most gliders don't like being grabbed. Try coming down to her level and ask yourself things like, how would you feel if you suddenly had some huge hands coming at you and picking you up? Start off slow, maybe just leaving her in her cage and slowly offering your hand to her with a treat. Move at her pace, she'll come around. Let her walk onto your hand, and then you can start petting her. You've already gotten a good tip on getting her in the bonding pouch. I would work on that as well to get her used to your movements, smell, and voice. Again, ask yourself, how would you like just being forced into a pocket? The bonding pouch is great for starters as it should become familiar to your glider, especially in that it will smell like her. Just have patience. and if she starts crabbing at you, just stop where you are. Don't move back, she'll learn she's intimidating you. Instead, let her know and see that you don't want to hurt her. When she calms down, you can move forward.

Yeah she's pretty upset with me right now...because the breeders I bought her from basically told me to just keep putting her in a shirt pocket and carrying her around everyday for at least an hour....they said I should pocket train her first and then hand train her...so they said to safety pin the top of the pocket shut so she won't escape...she did okay with that, but getting her in the pocket was awful...i don't want her to get stressed out and get sick....the guy that i bought her from just had his little glider hanging out in his pocket and was handling him and the glider was just so calm and he was just well-trained...wherever his owner placed him, that's right where he stayed....i'm really looking forward to that...so I guess i need to get a bonding pouch...I just don't want her bonding to the pouch instead of me

You may want to leave her alone for more than accouple days. All gliders are different. My Suki was instantly unafraid of me where Gabby took a month or so. She only warmed up after 7 months. For a few days I would spend a lot of time by her cage. Talk, sing, whatever. Talk on the phone with your friends, read aloud from a book. Then, place your hand on her cage. Don't touch her, don't get close to her, just let it rest in the cage until she knows it's not going to hurt her. It helps to have applesauce or some other treat on your finger! Once she becomes more accustomed, she'll get curious about you and probably perch on your hand. Just let her do that for awhile without touching her still. This may need to be done for a few days. Then you can gradually start moving your hand around and try petting her. During the day, do as someone said above and get a bonding pouch for her to sleep in so you can just unhook it and take it out without disturbing her. They hang from your neck so she can sleep soundly against your chest. She'll get accustomed to your scent this way and your breathing and voice and movements. Good luck to you!

I'm sorry just wanted to add. Gloves will protect you short term but are detrimental to the bonding process. She needs to be able to get used to the scent of your hand and can't do that through the gloves.

She's going to bond to you, not the pouch. I switch mine all the time! They feel comfortable in the pouch, besides, if its on you, it's going to start smelling like you. I'd say it's more comfortable way for her to bond with you. The use of a pin to hold the pocket idea closed scares me. A pocket is so small, and obviously if she's scared, she's going to be fighting to get out. I'd be worried that I'd stick her with the pin while trying to get it closed.

Welcome to GC! I just wanna let ya know that I agree, NO GLOVES! While the bite does hurt a bit, she really won't "shred" you, lol. We had to go through that twice with our babies and like everyone says, you just gotta be prepared to take the bite and move on. It's truly NOT that bad. Let her get used to your smell and NOT the smell of the gloves. You're asking her to trust you, now you have to trust her as well.

Hello and Welcome to Glider Central. Two days is a very short time to give her to adapt to her new home and surroundings. This is a very big change for her and she is scared right now. Her only defense is to crab, attack and bite. The best way to start out is to simply sit quietly outside her cage and talk to her. Have some treats ready to offer if she comes over to you. You need to be patient and understand how everything looks from her point of view. You can also cut up some squares of fleece fabric and wear them on your body for 24 hours to get your scent all over them, then place them in her sleeping pouches. This will help her ger used to your smell without feeling threatened. The more you grab at her against her will the worse things will get, the glove isn't going to make a difference or not (except that you won't get bitten). Here are some great links with wonderful information on bonding: Into the bonding pit Bourbon’s Trust and Bonding Critter KissesThe easiest way to bond with a glider is to take things slowly and move at their pace.

You've been given great advice and links. Just remember to go at her pace, and have an abundance of patience, love, understanding, and treats. She'll start to come around. Crabbing, lunging, and biting are definite signs to slow down. When she approaches you out of curiosity to sniff you, or climb on you, or when she hisses or clicks to greet you, then you'll know she's ready to take your relationship to the next level. Good luck!

well we've made LEAPS and BOUNDS....I got rid of the gloves and just started sitting next to her cage every day and talking to her...then I started putting my hand inside the cage and just hold it there instead of trying to touch her....one time she jumped on it but then immediately jumped right back off...although i didn't care I was just elated that she touched me. I invested in some toys: swing thing, a rope, a feather teaser and a wodent wheel with the nail trimmer in it. Thank God for Suncoast...she loves her Wodent wheel. I also HIGHLY recommend a bonding pouch...we did that for the first time yesterday and with the exception of my husband forgetting and squooshing her half to death with a hug, she did great. Also I gave her a papaya treat this morning from my hand and she gently accepted (these treats are from God) and then she proceeded to let me stroker her from head to tail....I'm so happy!!! As soon as she goes to bed I'm going to do more bonding pouch time. I tried those yogurt drops that SunCoast sells and she does not care for them at all, but she loves the papaya treats.

I agree bugsmama it is better to get them to bond with you when they are sleeping, and to have items that smell like you in the cage with them. They bond strongly to scent and voice. Also I don't use perfume while I am bonding with my new babies. I want for them to get used to me, not confuse them with a perfumed scent.

She's still doing great guys! She loves me to rub her head and she is crabbing less when she's around my neck...she's starting to really trust me...I haven't tried to pick her up yet, but I can tell it'll probably be within the next month that maybe i can start holding her...she's doing really well...but to tell you the truth, I don't think I will buy another one until she has lived out her life because they are hard work and so many things can go wrong with them...it's really hard to find a vet and I definitely don't think I'm ready to have more than one....so she's going to be my baby and only child.....at least for a few years.

That is one thing I've noticed all my gliders love, is a headrub
So glad you two are doing better, you've gotten through half the battle. Just wait til it's time to put her back in the cage and she wants to stay with Mommy
I love the name you chose for her, do show us some pictures of Sassy when you can
