In addition to canned fruits usually having to much added sugar and canned vegies having to much added salt, there is another reason to avoid giving canned foods to our gliders.

Bisphenol A

These are just some of the sites I looked at. Most will say they have detected no confirmed health risks to humans, they have detected health concerns with small mammals (mice and rats). Considering our gliders are on average between the size of a mouse and a rat...I feel the risks are much to high to feed canned foods to MY gliders.

Bisphenol A is used primarily to make plastics, and products using bisphenol A-based plastics have been in commercial use since 1957.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=plastic-not-fantastic-with-bisphenol-a

Quote:
Since at least 1936 it has been known that BPA mimics estrogens, binding to the same receptors throughout the human body as natural female hormones. And tests have shown that the chemical can promote human breast cancer cell growth as well as decrease sperm count in rats, among other effects.

Quote:
BPA is routinely used to line cans to prevent corrosion and food contamination

Quote:
BPA In Cans
Foods in #7 plastic containers and the majority of canned foods are exposed to this toxic chemical. Bisphenol-A is a plastic and resin ingredient used to line metal food and drink cans, and it's a main building block for polycarbonate (PC) plastics. Even at low doses, Bisphenol A has been linked to cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, obesity, and insulin resistance, which can lead to Type II diabetes.

http://www.cdc.gov/biomonitoring/BisphenolA_FactSheet.html

http://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/assets/docs_a_e/bisphenol-a-factsheet.pdf

And the irony here is, BPA is used to protect the food products from having ZINC leech in from the tin cans. Is BPA the lesser of two evils?

That's exactly why I avoid them! Even for myself, I stay away from anything canned if at all possible and I'm no where near as small as my gliders...

Thanks for posting smile

We stay away from canned foods as much as possible as well.
I have never liked the texture of canned foods. Too Mushy for me. The only thing I really buy canned is tuna and soups. We don't eat that much of it either.. Though I must say when I make my homemade soups my guys snarf it down faster than the canned LOL

Thats so much for the info Dancing!!

Canned citrus and canned soups are the worst for the leeching from the cans. (tomato based items are very acidic).

I admit, I do eat a lot of canned products. Makes me wonder if that is part of my health problems. I prefer fresh or frozen but sadly, our budget for OUR food, doesn't stretch far enough for fresh or frozen. Now...if I wasn't feeding so many gliders the good stuff...maybe there would be some good stuff left over for me!

so I was wondering...

If we tell people not to feed canned fruits and vegies, why is it ok to feed them canned Ensure?

Darcy's diet AKA the Ensure diet was not developed to be a primary staple food for gliders.

Here are some of my thoughts on this diet.

1 - it began as a way to get additional nutrients into a very sick glider who could not eat the diet offered other gliders.

2 - it is a good way to give a measured amount of calcium supplement divided over a period of time which is more accurate dosage than "sprinkling" too much or too little on food and it does contain additional vitamins. This same goal is met by the calcium and vitamins in the HPW diets and by the addition of supplements in the BML recipe.

3 - it does not provide for all of a glider's protein needs and the feeding plan includes feeding a protein source along with fruits and vegetables. HPW and BML are also the primary protein source in those diets.

I consider the "ensure diet" to be a way of administering calcium and vitamins to gliders - I would not consider it to be a balanced staple in the same category as BML or HPW which are intended to meet the gliders needed protein, vitamins and calcium needs.

As for the "canned" product issue - I do not think as many canned products were packaged in coated cans when this diet was initially used for Darcy so it was a non-issue at the time.

I have never seen Ensure in cans, but always in plastic bottles.

BTW, doesnt canned food usually have extra salt or suagrs added anyway?

Some do have added sugar and/or salts but not all.

The only canned food I use is canned tuna. I would never give my gliders anything from a can. Thanks for posting this I told my best friend about the article about BPA because she has a 5 month old that I know drinks from a bottle and I think this is something that she should be aware of.

Candy, thanks for the post and I totally agree. The Ensure diet is NOT the same as Darcy's diet. The two should not be confused or thought of as equal. Darcy got more than just the Ensure. I've had some extremely unhealthy gliders come to me on the "ensure" diet. (Reep was one of them).
