not sure what you are calling "heavy inbreeding". It only takes ONCE to cause the genetic defects to happen.

Inbreeding is absolutely a cause of sterility in any animal. It doesn't mean it will always occur. It may not be in the Mickey/Minnie line because that line wasn't continued to be inbred. That was an isolated inbreeding incident (I believe).

With the mosaic line, and please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that Helen Morano had a colony of mosaics that she allowed to continue to inbreed. Multiple generations inbreeding does result in sterility.

I am aware that there the sterility issue has been introduced into the plat lines. I'm sure it's been introduced into about every color there is. The problem is that it isn't identified in the database. And THAT is a huge problem because most people are not going to know it.

Were you aware that Sterling produced sterile males? So in that line alone there are leus, white face, plats, and hets.

There needs to be more responcible breeders out there keeping lines clean! You shouldn't have to check everything over with a fine tooth comb when it comes to buying your breeding stock. And everyone should just be honest! Those who aren't obviously arnt in it for the glider they are in it for the money! JMO

Not necessarily true tab. It's not that they are in it for the money, its more that things like this weren't tracked in the database. Worse yet, is that the database doesn't get updated as "we" think it should.

Actually, it is your responsibility as a buyer to research the glider and the lines that you are buying (even for pet only). It is also the breeders responsibility to know their lines and pass the information on to the new buyer. It's a dual responsibility.

The problem is that if the notes aren't in the database, how are "we" to know there is or was a problem in the first place? Take Sterling as an example. If I didn't know someone that has a glider from that line, I wouldn't have known about the sterility issue.

Something else to look for,is that once they get alittle older, someone is going to want to be the'alpha'glider,& the way they do this looks like they are'breeding'but they are not.
Hopefully, the sister will be the alpha,& then you won't have to worry when you witness the conquest of this happening.

shelly that is one of those lines that has a missing link, seeing that it is a champagne line it probably came from the champ lines
that is also a sterile line..

yes we can only speculate what all helen moreno has done.. no record at all..

All I meant was its sad that the buyer has to be the one to double check everything instead of just being able to trust that someone is being honest and responcible. I used to be a fairly large dog breeder and its the same way there. U pretty much have to get a dog dna tested to see that the ppl are not lying about there lines these days. Its crazy.

If I ever decide to get back into glider breeding in the years to come I'm glad I know a few ppl I can def trust smile

Shelly after checking the database it is very possible that the sterling that was chosen was possibly the wrong one.. or if it was the right one may it was not from the sterile lines.. the sterile line sterling is located here..

Not sure about this one, but I have the right Sterling. Helen (TheGliderPlayroom) has Candace from that line, which is out of Lorie who is out of Willow that Jen Bender has/had. Sheila had Sterling paired with Bailey and she had sterile males. Willow (out of Sterling & Bailey) also went on to produce sterile males. Bailey was then re-paired to Lil Dipper.
