Last night I made my first PML. My four gliders loved it!! It's super easy to make also!! I think I might start feeding it to them regularly now. It's very convenient that it's only four ingredients also. I already use the WHPS on their fruit every night but now I'll just do the PML and not put it on their fruit.
I know that their are others that are interested in making it also so I thought I'd let you know how it went for me and my babes!!

I have been feeding it for over a year, and every night the bowls are licked cleaned. I am glad your gliders loved it.

How much fruit/veggies and protein do you add to make up the other 50% of their diet?

Last night I gave them some mango along with the PML and 5 mealworms each. I'm not real clear if I also need a staple food with that. I always have been using Insectivore Fare moist pellets. I wonder if I should continue with that and use PML? Anyone have a clue??

Those who feed PML, do I need to still give the Insectavore Fare moist pellets along with fruit and mealies?

I have been feeding the PML for a long time now. I feed them their PML, veggies and fruits. I leave the mealies and such for treats. No need in having the insectivore in the cage as well as all the needed suppliments are already in the diet.

Hey Peggy.. I was curious.. since PML is 50% of their diet.. and fruits, veggies, and treats.. make up 10% of their diet, and you don't feed insectivore fair, which Debbie says makes up a good part of the other 50% of their diet, (I know, it adds up to 110% lol but I'm still learning here too, so I dont know why, lol).. ANYway, since you don't feed insectivore fare, what else makes up your kid's other half.. do you do chicken, or monkey biscuits instead?

I have been feeding insectivore fare for the last week.. to see if they'd eat it, and only one of four will actually touch the stuff.. so I thought if you dont feed it either, maybe I could do what you did for it's substitute..

Course, My kids don't like monkey biscuits either.. They WILL do chicken at least.. lol.

What am I missing? I went to the PML link and I see where it says that makes up only 50% of their diet, but I don't see what the other 50% is suppose to be. Is the rest of the diet based on BML? Are the fruits and vegetables the same restrictions as in the BML?

Ames, I can understand where your confusion comes in so let me try to explain to you where I came up with mine. As Pockets knows, although I feed the High Protein, I actually dont call what I feed my furballs PML, due to the ingredients being different from hers. I just call mine a HPW diet.
You see, when Pockets first told me about the diet she highly recommended for me to have my vet check it out before switching diet plans. Which I did. I waited until I heard back from my vet and I went according to his opinion on it as well as I feel he is a wonderful very knowledgable and educated exotic vet, including in the sugar glider field.
He suggested to me to feed as I have posted before and to feed the HPW mix with the same amount of fruits and veggies and gliderade twice a week. I also give mine an avacado and chicken mixture on occassion. He is worried that too much protien to their diets can be just as harmful as not enough.

My gliders are all very healthy, thank God, no illnesses and the joeys I have are always very good size and moms never have a problem with nursing.
When I do have a glider that has joeys in pouch and or nursing, I do increase the amount of HPW to 1/2 c instead of 1/4 of a cup to up the protein levels when needed.

The best advice Pockets has ever given is to consult your veternarian and to have them check into things. Granted not everyone can be as lucky as I have been and not all vets are as knowledgable, however I believe if they are willing to talk to other vets, this is one way for them to learn.

I am in NO WAY saying Pockets is in any way shape or form wrong in the way she feeds and I could only wish to have the chance to feed some of the things she is capable of feeding, such as some of the aussie plants and stuff she has. Her wisdom is incredibly amazing and I have and will continue to learn a great deal from her.

But as she has done with me, I will do with others, and that is to recommend talking with your vet over diet issues. It is not a thing that we must all just jump to do. In the same breath I will say that I have seen HUGE improvements over all to all of my gliders since putting them on the HPW diet and I really and truly am thankful for all of her help and teaching me about this as I really dont know for sure whether my gliders would all be doing as good as they currently are if they were on anything else right now. You see, I too am one that had a lot of problems getting them to eat BML and although Bourbon and I tried many different ways, my gliders would eat it a couple nights and then just totally ignore it and I was concerned, therefore sought after a different diet plan. I just didnt want to go with *anything* though. I wanted a diet that has been around with great success for many years, and God just happened to put Pockets in my path for my next lesson.

I hope this cleared a little up for you. Sorry for rambling.

I definitely understand the value of consulting your vet with a diet change.. I wish my vet had the time to pour over my notes and ideas.. Being the vet for the zoo in town, he's a very knowledgeable, BUT, a very busy man.. and I know all vets are different, but I would think.. if a trusted glider community member had the good fortune of having a good vet who looked everything over, then I don't see why passing that on to others isn't good enough, instead of more vets saying more things with more contradictions causing even more confusion on an already confusing issue.

I'd trust my vet's info.. like I'd trust your trusted vets info.. like I'd trust Pockets extensive research that's already been done.. I know all gliders aren't the same, but surely, what's good for one is still good for another..

Not every specific in any diet is going to fly with all gliders.. Like you, as I said, my gliders will eat BML a couple nights, and then they've had enough.. two of my gliders will pick at Insectivore Fare, and the other two refuse it tails down..lol. I've been around deciding on the diet 'what's best' topic for eight looong years, and I know that in the end you just have do your research, figure out what you think will work, AND what your gliders will tolerate and try to stick to the majority of the diet you end up going with.. It's not easy though.. it's especially not easy to feel 110% certain you're doing the 'right' thing.. I just do my best..

Peggy thank you for rambling. I'm glad there are other options than something written in stone.. I just wish I knew what was best for MY four.. and primarily, Sophie.. the other three are flourishing on whatever diet I put them on.. lol.

ANYWAY.. now look who's rambling.. lol.. ..I don't know what option best fits Sophie's needs, but I better find someone who might have some idea, so I don't decide on the WRONG option.. Thanks again Peggy. LuvAme...
