I agree, skip the fabric softener. I recommend adding some vinegar to the wash, it should help make a difference. I wouldn't worry too much if they still had a little stink to them though, it will make it more acceptable to your gliders and you'll know that it's clean anyway. Also, I wash my pouches inside out, I just feel like that the inside gets cleaner, but can't say for sure that it does.

I use about a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. It does seem to clean things better than just plain laundry soap.

If you have two intact males, the pouches are going to smell as soon as they sleep in them one day. No point in stressing out over how they smell when they come out of the wash. Your best bet to hold the odor down is neutering the guys. It does make all the difference in the world in the cage smell.

I plan to neuter them but it does cost money. To have them both neutered is about $400.00. These guys are rescues for me (along with a female - separate cages of course) because of a previous owner not being able to care for them. I was in no way prepared for how much it would cost to have them neutered nor did I know I would need to. Surprise!!! I've only found one vet in the area who even does this type of work and I'm just not confident that he has enough experience either. So for the time being I have chosen to hold off. I know they will have a slight odor. I've had them now for over a year and I am well aware that they are stinkier because they are boys. I'm just looking for safe ways to reduce it untill I can afford to have them neutered.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to reduce the odor - it is what it is. Intact boys smell, some more than others, depending on how much they like to mark. You'll work against yourself if you overclean, so I'd stick to a routine of about once a week, changing out pouches and wiping the cage down, and that's about all you'll be able to do until you are able to get them neutered.
