I was reading a post on here about safe toys and not safe toys and it said that an unsafe toy is a paper towel tube. The one day when I had my gliders out for bathroom time I had a roll of paper towels ont he floor and my gliders looooved it. They kept running through it and playing in it and climbing all over it so when the paper towels were gone I put it in the cage and I've been giving them all the rolls ever since. Is it really bad to use them and should I take them away? Please everyone give your opinions!

I think the concern with paper towel/toilet paper rolls has to do with possible impaction. If they were to chew it and swallow it, there's a possibility it could result in an intestinal blockage.

I'm not sure on this, but it's the only harm I can think of (unless people are concerned about the glue used).

[:"green"]I believe that the glue was the issue of concern with using paper towel or tp tubing... There was a question of the toxicity of the glue.

I'd say as a supervised playtime toy they are fine because you can watch and make sure no one gets stuck inside, it chewing on the roll, etc.

Ok, I may have this wrong...the husband of one of our members works at a place that makes those types of cardboard tubes. Through her, he said that the glue used is extremely toxic to animals.

For me, why risk it?

[:"green"]Teresa, that's the way that I remembered it, too... I agree... if there's a possibility that it's toxic, don't risk using it, even under supervision.

i see three potential problems…
- the chewing
- the glue – toxic
- possibility of a glider getting ‘stuck in one’

For me the risk is just to much…

I have larger pvc pipes that are curved - they were purchased new and cleaned - my gang loves them! and they only need washing ever so often - they play hide and eat in them sometimes...great alternative adn safer - hamster tubing is to small and ferret tubes to big and expensive pvc easy cheap and available in MANY sizes!

Hmm, I can't imagine one getting stuck in one long enough to get dehydrated and die???? Maybe I am just ulra paranoid and don't sleep well anyway, so I'm always checking on my babies, lol. Shoot, they're the only other ones up at the hours I keep, hehe. Seriously though, I'm with ya'll, I LOVE my babies far too much to risk it if there's ANY possible way it may be harmful. To osmo238, I wouldn't be concerned about letting them play with them in the past, I'm sure they're okay, BUT now that you know there may be good reasons not to let them play with them, you can change that if you're concerned PS. I've also let mine run through them before, but I hadn't ever put one in their cage, like I said, I'm way over protective when it comes to my suggies. Maybe it's cause I've only got ONE human daughter and she's 10 going on 20 so these are my "babies", haha.
