I got this from my vet yesterday.

lab reports

drcollins@

3:49 PM (18 hours ago)

Connie....forgot my printer with scanner not working...I will copy reports and mail to you, but this is summary or comments on each case:

1)
Mimi: pathologist-Dr.Hsiao

severe kidney disease-microscopically

comments: interstitial nephritis is often associated with leptospira species
infection in sugar gliders. microbiology examination is pending.

leptospira pcr test negative
no significant bacteria recovered from kidneys/or lungs.

lungs-swollen.....(probably 2ndary to severe kidney disease)

heart/liver/intestines/stomach/pancreas/adrenal glands/lymph nodes/spleen/
brain and brain stem....all normal, no microscopic changes seen.

2)
Bibi-Dr. Roady

stomach/small intestine/pancreas/colon/brain-no microscopic changes seen.

lungs-pneumonia
liver-focal areas of infection-mild
kidneys-severe kidney disease
heart-moderate bacterial infection
area around eyes-severe bacterial infection-abcess

bacterial culture revealed heavy strep bacterial infection from eye area.

comments: the histological lesions are suggestive of a septicemia with embolic spreading of bacteria through out the kidneys, heart, liver and lungs.

Dr. Roady feels strep infection from abcess under eye spread through out
Mimi's body...also felt lepto poss responsible for changes in kidneys...
but pcr lepto test was negative.

Mercedes pouch cytology: mixture of gram positive and gram negative
bacterial cocci and rods....no inflammatory cells indicating significant infection, no yeast/ protozoal or fungal organisms present.

As you can see, the pathologists examined everything, and checked all tissues microscopically, so very thorough exam.....
and most significant issue is the kidney disease found in both ---

Bibi also had strep infection in her blood and through-out several organs in her body, but, this most likely 2ndary to kidney disease...no strep found in Mimi.

So the commonality between both is the kidney disease.
Still suspect lepto...there are different "types" of lepto, called serovars...
so there may be a unique type of lepto in gliders that the test doesn't pick up.
lepto is very difficult to isolate and grow in the lab, so by nature it is very
sneaky. not hard to treat, but difficult to diagnose.

and there can be individuals who carry the bacteria but who do not get ill themselves...and it can be zoonotic..passing back and forth to humans and
gliders, and other species, as well...mostly dogs and wildlife.

So, Dr. Roady is getting more information for us....I think he just needed some prompting....but, he was more than willing to do further research....

Appreciate the fact you allowed us to have U of I examine both cases....
We will get more information.

Dr. Roady commented a lot of things have not been documented yet in gliders so, any information will be helpful for others in future.

Has Mercedes had other babies?

Thanks...Dr. C

The babies belonged to Mercedes and Beau. Mercedes has had joeys in the past. They were both fine. She was also housed at one time, with Miss BooBoo, who had successful joeys, and with Dew Drop, the father of joeys with both Mercedes and Miss BooBoo. All of their resulting joeys were healthy.

Mercedes is now housed with Beau, who is healthy. They have had one successful joey, then they had Mimi and Bibi.

All three adult gliders will be three in June and have had no health issues.

I feed Reeps and have fed it for three years.

Dew Drop acts like a baby, but he's actually a daddy!

Thank you!
