A girl I was talking to on hoobly the other day told me that:
"Gliders ever fall on their backs. They land on their feet 100% of the time".

I'd love to hear what everyone has to say about this little tidbit.

Thanks guys.

I wish I could get some vets to chime in too!
I was super surprised to hear this girl say it.
But then it got me thinking...

Has anyone else watched their glider fall on its back?
I know its super sad to think about....
I just don't think I've seen it.
Though my significant other alleges that Beeble did once.

I believe gliders are like cats in that sense. The vestibular apparatus in there ears pick up when the glider is upside down which cause the body to automatically right itself.

One of my gliders fell just the other day and did not land on her feet but on her back. She only fell about two feet but landed on her back and quickly got up. She was not hurt as she started to immediately climb up the curtains.

My Mudbug would like to tell you this is completely false... As would my Rascal and my Elfie.. Those are the only three I have actually seen falling on their butts or sides, but I am sure they all do at some point..

Gliders (just like cats) will try to right themselves in mid-air and I have seen several of my gliders do this. But do they always land on their feet? Again, like cats, no. They will land on their sides, their backs, I have even seen them land twisted (their front feet got the right way but their back feet didn't).

Gliders do land upright much more often than not, though. Just like the reason the myth started with cats (or at least part of the reason), if you don't ever (or rarely) see it, then some people assume.

yeah, pretty sure they will most of the time land on their feet, but not always. cats are the same. they try to land on thier feet, but sometimes dont get it quite right. my yougest one seems to prefer the "panic and flop on your butt" course of action when he falls. one of the clumsiest gliders i've seen. He never hurts himself, because there is always something fluffy to land on, but it never ceases to amaze me how terrible he is at landing on his feet.

I've only had a few big falls that I have seen and expected to go badly... All landed on their feet!

Gliders do not always land on their feet...I watched Kaylee fall the other night from one of the ropes in the cage she landed on her butt/back. And let me tell you she was not happy that I witnessed her fall and rushed to check on her as she scurried away and made a half hearted crab.

I've seen at least two of my gliders fumble and land on their backs/sides on a few occasions. The boys are absolutely nuts and have decided they need to not only seize the day, but throttle it (as well as any tall surface that could be graced with haphazard wildness).

Sadie doesn't glide, but she does jump. She misjudged a landing once and landed funny on her back. I was mortified and freaked out, thinking she was hurt. It may have bothered her a little, she maybe seemed just the tiniest bit sore for a little while, but was right back to her usual self in no time.

I'm amazed by the landings they *do* make, though. I have those wooden perches that come with bird cages, and my boyfriend and I use them as "glider wands." We just point them at stuff and the gliders jump on them. Shiloh started to jump off of it, but he was at the very end where it wasn't very stable. The force he used for the jump propelled the stick away from him instead of propelling him. I scooped the stick back under him and managed to catch him. He seemed to think it was pretty cool, haha.

^this!

and keep in mind, they are more likely to land "off" when they fall a shorter distance and dont have that time to twist around the right way.
