BML not in ice trays…

So for those of you that do feed BML, but do not use the Ice cube tray method… what do you do?? And how well does it work for you? I am still planning to freeze it, I know we have discussed squeeze bottles before… but I am wondering how well it works if frozen in a container, and what use to scoop / measure it out… thanks…

I stopped using the BML for a while because my freezer was freeze burning it in the ice cube trays. Nothing I could really do about it, being in an apartment. I recently switched back to BML from another diet after I noticed Elise was turning orange (her color is back to normal now). I now put my BML in a tupperware container and freeze it. This way it isn't "exposed to the elements" so to speak. I take it out of the freezer a couple hours before feeding time. If it hasn't completely thawed by that time, it's the texture of ice cream. I scoop it out using a measuring spoon (either 1/2 or 1 tablespoon).

When my gliders were on BML before they were very unhappy with it. Now they all gobble it up

Also, if using uncovered ice cube trays, you may want to "decube" them and store them in a covered container.

Or, you can pour it and freeze it in a flat type of covered container and cut it like you were cutting brownies. Just take one out at a time as needed.

And lastly, Tupperware used to sell ice cube trays with covers which is what I have. They work GREAT!

I think I was the one that started the squeeze bottle thing and it worked great when I had only one glider. Those days are over and gone now. LOL

Good luck John.

I use the Glad Press & Seal wrap over my ice cube trays & have never had an issue with freezer burn...maybe I'm just lucky.

We make a huge amount at one time and pour it into a very large tupperwear container with a tight fitting lid. It takes up one shelf in the freezer. I have a set of very heavy duty metal measuring spoons with a sharp edge and I measure out a tespoon at a time onto the plate at night. It works well with this many gliders.

They make ice cube trays with covers now.. and the Press N' Seal works great also!

I will only freeze my BML into cubes.. I thought that there was an issue with the vitamins settling to the bottom of larger containers.. where as in the ice cube trays you get some vitamins in each cube.

I pour my BML into a big tupperware bowl with a lid. It goes in the freezer. Then when it's feeding time, I use a tablespoon to scoop out BML for them into their bowls. It's easy to scoop, just like ice cream! I like doing it this way because otherwise my freezer majorly "freezer burns" anything in the cube trays, and I am also very certain of the amount they're getting. It's also way less mess when I'm pouring it.

I recall reading a post initiated by CharlieH about the vitamins settling to the bottom of container if the BML was poured into a large container. That is why I use ice cube trays so I know that the vitamins are distributed evenly.

A melon baller was used to scoop the BML out of the container by one of our members and according to the person, it worked great!

When i was VERY new at gliders I put it in a tupperware ice cream container and it worked great. But then I came here and read that the vitamins and calcium do settle at the bottom (this was over 4 years ago). I did notice that the vitamins and calcium did settle on the bottom once I emptied the container out. So I switched to the ice cubes! Those who use ice cubes could probably tell you that they notice alot of the vitamins and calcium sink to the bottom of the cube, but at least it is messured out.

I’ve been using trays from day one back in 04… but now that I have increased my fold…lol. . was thinking about making a double bach, and wondering if it would be easier to do in a larger container… BUT the more solid materials, vitamins included, sinking does make sense … . SO I guess I will be getting some more trays…lol…

John,
That's why I mentioned cutting them like brownies in cube form. This way you get top and bottom layer.
You have to test the size of the cut a couple times to get the TBS measurement.

Maybe it has to do with how long you mix it? I have never noticed the vitamins settling or any difference from when I used the ice cube trays.

John suggiebaby found some awsome cube trays that holds 60 tablespoon size cubes. and they do fit in the side by side..

also what I do sometimes is pour it into a plastic cake pan size tupperware container (i make double batches.. after about 2 hours in the freezer, I score them, then put it back in the freezer.. on my first feeding I then break the cubes up, and place them into a zip lock baggie, leaving room for me to make another batch later if i wish.

So, Bourbon, do the vitamins and calcium settle to the bottom?

Like Angie, I pour mine into an air-tight container, and I've never noticed any settling. If I remember, I score mine and cut into small cubes so they're easy to scoop out later. If I forget, it takes a bit of muscle to get their portions out.

wait, thawing out the entire container for a couple of hours a night, isn't that jus asking for food posoining or bacteria?

I don't think anyone is thawing out a container of BML for a couple of hours, that's how long they said they waited for it to freeze, then cut the cubes, then place back in the freezer, it never thaws..... not completely anyways.

I do mine in containers so far.. but I use a set of spoons I have that measure one tablespoon (I also use them for my medicines that I take in powdered form), and I use smaller shallow containers, so I am taking some from the bottom into each bowl each night... I just use the spoon to cut it out of the bowl and serve, I store them side by side in a shallow freezer (the new fridge we won guys!) but you could just as easily stack the containers... though I have been thinking about switching back to ice cube trays and keeping the BML in one of the other freezers and just their fruits and veggies in the little one. As long as there is no more glider food in the basement freezer I'll be ok (I kept the old diet there except one or 2 trays at a time because it made 7 trays a batch!)

I put them in the ice cube trays for freezing and later when the cubes are frozen i pop them out and put them all in a ziplock freezer bag and it works well .. no freezer burns and they stay fresher longer that way..

As far as the settling goes, I have had that happen from time to time. I found that it has to do with mixing time. If I'm in too big of a hurry and mix it quick it will settle a bit. If I take my time and let it truly mix up for a few minutes then everything is okay.

i make single batch BML..i store it in tupperware container but it is sooooo hard to scoop it out, i think i will get some icecube tray (i wish i thought of it earlier) and pop the cubes out and put them in freezer ziplock bag or in tupperware.... but i wonder if this method would be okay? i would scrap out about two days worth of BML and put them in an empty babyfood jar, and put it in the fridge, would that be okay???????

I'd suggest buying a huge load of ziplock bags, and stacking them in the freezer (with enough BML in them that they lie flat, and about a half inch thick), and then just break /squeeze out a spoonfull. No freezerburn, and no issues with settling/separating.

I freeze mine in the trays but, i take it one step farther and put them inside a gallon zip lock bag to keep it from freeze burn. When they are frozen, i run the tray bottom under water to release , and pop out the cubes back into the bag. Makes it nice and fast to get out.

[:"blue"] I found THESE "Orka" TRAYS that have worked well for me
They have a SOFT BOTTOM to easily "pop" out cubes when needed by
just PRESSING!, It releases each one individually without making a mess
They also have LIDS to protect from freezer burn!
The lids have grooves in them to STACK with no worry of tipping or sliding off each other! [/]
