I was recently in Lufkin, TX (I live about 20 minutes away in Nacogdoches) and of course my gliders were with me. I went into PetSmart in search of possible new toy pieces & because my daughter loves to look at the fish and birds. I was approached by the store manager who recognized the bonding pouch. She politely informed me that having sugar gliders in the city limits was against a city ordinance (as is having snakes). How do we go about trying to get this changed?? I will be teaching 1st grade this school year and I would love to take my babies with me to work (Rocky went with me regularly at the end of this past year, but I was teaching in Nacogdoches then).

awesome! Thank you! I knew they were legal in the state, but was shocked when I found out that I couldn't take them to Lufkin. I'll have to check into (don't want them to be confiscated or anything)!

Here is what I found on the subject.

Web address: [stem%3Aordinances]]]$x=server$3.0#LPHit1]Prohiited animals

Quote:
(1) Class Reptilia. Family Helodermatidea (venomous lizards); Family Viperidae (rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, other pit vipers and true vipers); Family Elapidae (coral snakes, cobras, mambas, and other elapids); the following listed species of Family Colubridae—Dispholidus typus (Boomslang), Hyrodynastes gigas (water cobra), Bolga (mangrove snake), and Thelotocals (African twig snake) only; Order Phidla, Family Boldae (racers, boas, water snakes and pythons); and Order Crocodilla (crocodiles, alligators, Calmans, and gavials);

(2) Class Aves. Order Falconiforms (such as hawks, eagles and vultures); Subdivision Ratitae (such as ostriches, rheas, cassowaries, and emus); and Order Strigiforms (such as owls);

(3) Class Mammalia. Order Carnivora, Family Felidae (such as ocelots, margays, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and cougars), except commonly accepted domesticated cats: Family Canidae (such as wolves, or wolf hybrid, dingos, coyotes, and jackals), except domesticated dogs; Family Mustelidae (such as weasels, skunks, ferrets, martins, mink, and badgers); Family Procyonidae (raccoon); Family Ursidae (such as bears); Order Marsupialia (such as kangaroos and common opossums); Order Edentata (such as sloths, anteaters, and armadillos); Order Probosicidea (elephants); Order Primata (such as monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas); Order Rodentia (such as porcupines); and Order Ungulata (such as antelope, deer, bison, and camels).

(4) The Director may declare any species of animal not listed in this section as “prohibited” if the confinement of the animal within the city can be shown to constitute a threat to public health and safety.

(B) PROHIBITED ANIMAL does not include:

(1) A bird kept in a cage or aviary that is not regulated by international, federal, or state law; or

(2) A gerbil, hamster, guinea pig, or laboratory mouse or rat.

('72 Code, § 5-102) (Penal Ord. 389, passed 8-20-91)

If your interested in changing this ordinance I can email you the letter I send out to all the members of the city council.

I was able to get the City of Madison in Wisconsin to amend their ordinance to exempt sugar gliders.

I can't believe that ferrets are not allowed in Lufkin either. I wonder how many people have them as pets and do not know that it is illegal.

If you want my letter, send me a pm with your email address.

Cora, I don't believe this is completely correct.

If you remember BMXGirl, she lived in Dallas and said gliders are illegal in the city of Dallas.

I believe just like some other states, there are areas in Texas where gliders are not legal.

Wow! Ferrets are illegal and yet there is a horrible pet shop in the mall that sells them. I don't want to adopt ferrets as I am content with sugar gliders, but I almost came home with 2 the other day because of the conditions they were in. Thinking I'll be making a phone call in the morning to see what I can get done about it. What do you think??

Well i went by the so called pet shop to check in on the ferrets and they were gone. Hoping they went to a great home!! I will be sending a letter to the city to try and do something about getting the ordinance changed! Thanks everyone!
