This goes out to all the breeders (and genetic theorists) on the boards :gluck: :
It has been done with dogs, it has been done with foxes,
Can it be done with Sugar Gliders?
If so, how would you do it?
If not, what is your argument?

Many breeders will breed for temperament in their joeys. If the parents don't have a desired temperament, they don't breed them. The thought is to breed only the best tempered offspring.

We are around 20 years of breeding sugar gliders in the United States. I'm not convinced that we are always breeding for the better of the species when many times color takes precedence.

Shelley, I am unsure if you are familiar with the Silver Fox Project in Russia where they were able to breed for "Dog-Like" traits in wild foxes, but I would be very interested in seeing how this could work with Sugar Gliders. Are there any specific aspects within the general title of "temperament" that could be bred for? Do we yet know enough about Sugar Glider behavior to isolate these traits?

IMO, no we don't. During my conference this year, we had an amazing presentation regarding true sugar glider behavior in the wild. People don't yet recognize what all their natural behaviors and personalities are to be able to truly isolate them and breed for them, or to isolate them. Until we have true understanding of these amazing animals, we can't do that.

Too many times I see people freaking out because their glider crabs; which in turn is labeled as "pouch protective". This is determined to be a behavior that has to be modified or rectified when in fact, many times it is not a negative behavior or problem at all. (Now, I'm not referring to those that are crabbing, lunging, and biting...those that truly have behavioral issues as those do indeed exist sometimes.) Until we truly understand the personality and colony dynamics of the wild animal, we won't be able to fully understand the behaviors of the captive bred animal.

With types of presentations such as the one at the 2014 OSGA, we bring awareness and educate this type of information so we can all learn and grow. It's a step in the right direction.

Sorry if that got too off topic to your question. wink

No you answered my question perfectly and extensively! Thank you. Is it possible to access the presentations from the OSGA?

Not to pester grin, but what are the current accessible resources we have on Glider behavior in the wild?
And do you as an experienced breeder, keeper, and glider slave, notice any behaviors you think are worth investigating?

I wasn't the one that did the research so I'm unable to point you in that direction.

IMO, all behaviors are worth investigating. As I stated, until we understand why they behave the way they do, it makes it more difficult for us to fully understand them.
