Hey guys, I'm back! Life's been crazy the past few weeks, so I haven't really been active, but I've been lurking.

Anyway, the past two nights my gliders have been crabbing at each other WAAAAY more than usual. Before, several nights could pass with no crabbing at all! Last night I had to sleep with a lamp on to get them to stop tounge And hours later when I turned it off, the crabbing soon started again.

Anything I can do to help things? I rearranged some cage furnishings yesterday and put in a bunch of treasure chests with dried mango, plus put straws through their cage-balls, in case they were bored, but it didn't seem to help. (Although, possibly related: a few nights ago they stopped taking down and collecting the rings I hang from the barrel o'monkeys monkeys. )

The cage is big enough and there are multiple places to sleep, so it's not that they are confined together in a small space...

Is the bickering is going on when they're up or resting in pouch?

I'm having a similar issue, but I think it's a dominance challenge or maybe just possessiveness of chosen toy/area.

It's hard when to determine the dynamics because we're challenged to spend the night watching our gliders in the dark all night, and that's usually not possible.

Did they come out to eat and play while your lamp was on?
You can try getting a colored light bulb that illuminates enough that you can see them in the cage. This way when you hear a skirmish, you can check and see what's going on, although you may miss the initial beginning, you may see patterns over time.

I took a bathroom DixieCup holder (the tall one, but short would work too), took out the springs and placed a short string of colored LED Christmas lights inside. This has made a great night light.

I actually can watch them with my flashlight app on my phone, they respond to it occasionally but not often, so they seem not to register it the same as a lamp or overhead light. It is while outside the pouch mainly, but when one went into the pouch, for awhile she started crabbing if the other went to the food dish beside that pouch. But later the other crawled into the pouch and they settled just fine.

It does seem to be dominance. I'm on a bus right now and need to get off in a minute, but I have an interesting dominance observation I can post later.

So after the first night of lots of crabbing, the usually timid girl suddenly seemed to be acting dominant to the other. I wondered if they had reestablished dominance and switched "nest protector" roles. After the second night of crabbing, the normal dominance order was restored.

Last night was the third night of crabbing... and it is starting to get to my room mates. Any advice??

See if the crabbing ends now after three days. It is possible that one of your gliders was in heat and they were probably bickering.

It is one idea as to what is going on with your crew.

So far so good, but they haven't been awake all that long. I washed all their plastic toys to get their smell off, and as I'd hoped, at least one of them is now interested in collecting toys again! I'd hypothesized that they had perhaps stopped because the toys smell like them, and hoarding is to claim the toys as "theirs"... if they already smell like them, no need.

I took out a pouch that seemed to be the center of bickering, too. They both stared at where it was supposed to be when they first woke up, and occasionally went over to the area only to stop suddenly tounge Sorry, girls! But you have three other other nesting spots still in there smile

I share Feather's thoughts - If your gliders are a male female pair - even if the male is neutered - the bickering you described is very likely mating behavior.

You may hear this every 30 days when ever the female is in heat. It will last 2-3 nights each time and they may not eat well on those nights because they are more interested in mating than in eating.

Females can and do bicker when one or the other is in heat. See if it lets up in a couple days.

Well, it has been five nights of intense crabbing. I have to be away from home overnight, so I'm going to leave a light on and move the cage to the other end of the room (farther away from my room mates' bed room!) for tonight. Next step will be to separate them for a few days frown

Less crabbing last night. The past few nights, though, there have been more hissing sounds from inside the pouch. Tonight, every so often, someone will let out a single small bark followed by a strange hiss... ?_?

The bark his is something females will do to call the male when their in heat. Not sure what it means when they are both girls.

It is just another way they communicate with each other.

Well, after 72 hours apart, Pallas began barking as soon as she woke up. So I put them back together. It was fine for awhile -- they cuddled in a pouch. But a few hours later, the crabbing started again.

I don't know what to do frown It's been 10 (or 11?) days since this started...

You might try a different type of pouch - perhaps one with a larger space or one that has a solid or thicker bottom that stays spread out so they each have more room to stretch out rather than piling one on top of the other.

Some gliders prefer the cube style pouch.

It's not inside the pouch that they crab. When they are both in, in fact, any crabbing stops. They do have a cube, but have never used it.

Oh, thank goodness, there was only a little crabbing last night! I'll post again tomorrow. Hopefully they are just getting used to sharing again and it's not whatever was going on last week!!

Does it seem to be about food?

Have you tried any methods of food aggression prevention?

It could also be over a specific object or objects in the cage. I've discovered this is the case with my trio, my male is taking over a pacific floor toy, either their tree house or Noah's Ark, depending which is in the cage.

If you can identify what the problem is, there are methods to possibly help prevent some or all squabbling.

After you find what is the underlying cause, then try different methods until you find what works for your gliders.

Another thing that comes to mind is whether they get regular "out of cage" play. I really believe that it plays a huge roll in their behavior. I'm fairly certain that's the cause of my Ollie boy's change. I have not been able to follow the same or really much of any routine of out of cage play due to my living arrangements after my move. Now that I have moved again across county, my living arrangements are still not ideal atm to resume a regular schedule, but I believe in the near future, I'll be able to work out something better than what I had going before.

I'm going to spend at least an hour tonight doing nothing but watching them. Pallas still gets nervous when she first wakes up, so I might even hide under a blanket. It does NOT seem to be about food, as in between crabbing they are often perched on the same bowl to eat. It is possibly their ball pit.

I'm going to definitely increase their out-of-cage play. It hasn't been happening as much recently because I recently had a medicine switched, and it makes me pass out earlier than normal (and hard), but I've started drinking more caffeine to combat it tounge
