I'm planning on making a playgym for bathroom time with my critters. The ones I've found to purchase are either too big for the space in my bathroom or too expensive to ship to where I live. I'm planning to make it out of wood because I've worked with wood before and the design I'm planning will be easiest with dowels.(I thought about using PVC but the tubing doesn't come as small as I'd need and plastic rod is more expensive than wooden dowels) I also plan to have some rope involved that will be replaceable whenever it starts to fray. I plan to use similar rope to any bird toys that incorporate rope but haven't settled on a exact type yet. I'd love your opinions, first on what type of rope to use and second on if I should leave the wood bare or if I should apply some type of finish to it. I'm thinking bare wood is best as I'm sure they'll chew it a bit (I'm even considering buying some premade ladders in the bird section of the pet store) but I'm not sure if cotton rope would be best or if I should use a braided poly of some type. I'm also curious if anybody else has done this and what they found worked well versus what didn't or things they're critters really like versus what they ignored. Thanks,

For tent time, wood should be fine. You will be supervising. Rope during supervised playtime should be fine too. I would recomend fleece instead cut into strips or braided together. I found an infant play mat similar to this http://www.target.com/p/bright-starts-se...N-JmRoCHk_w_wcBfrom a thrift store without toys for a $1. It's washable, but must be air dried. I would recommend if you choose to make your gym out of wood to wrap fleece around parts of the vertical parts for a change in texture here and there. fleece is ideal for many uses. It doesn't fray, makes great slings and swings, and can be used as rope. Washable, and it can be changed out and color co ordinate if you like. As far as what to put on the wood to protect it, someone else will have to fill you in. Please take pics! Would love to see your ideas !

Thanks for the ideas. The kids play mat is great but my bathroom is really small (It's a half bath, no tub, my roommates get upset when I take over the full bathroom for too long, although I might anyway)I've only had them since November and they aren't bonded yet so I try to keep them contained and I find the smaller bathroom is easier to keep track and keep them safe right now.
