Hi everyone I am very worried as yesterday I found that the tip of the tail which my neutered male has been overgrooming has changed colour to dark blue/grey and feels stiff.
I rushed him to the vet today but I am still as worried; the vet (not the one who usually sees my gliders) said the colour is due to the hair growing back and since there's no injury she asumes that he did not bite on his tail (i repeatedly told her I did not think this was possible but she seemed insecure and wanted to speak with my usual vet). She charged me for another deparasitation of the area (first was for the overgrooming) which I dont even know if it is really necessary(??).
She gave me an antibiotic for him e.12h and Metacam (I have been constantly saying it can cause liver damage over 3 days to four different vets, none did care and replied it was safe; so I really cant give him another pain medication as i need a receat).
I WILL go again this weekend but i wanted to know your opinion as I really think I should be really really worried. Here is the only good picture i could take from this squirmy little guy.

Another thing that confuses me is that the vet said that what worried her the most where the glands around his penis are constantly filling up (she actually drained them once?? Is this normal?) thus causing his penis to protrude.
Okay I have seen him just now with his penis completely retracted as he has always done, he just seems to spend a huge amount of time flossing during the day&night. Also he keeps it out while marking the whole bathroom but ive seen him retract perfectly.
The vet then said it was best to pay a 150€ blood test (I agree it is always convenient but just now?) and a couple of x-rays to see how his bones affected the penis protruding or neurological damage he could have (that is the best explanation i got.)
So maybe i am just worried about his tail or im missing imformation but I cant avoid feeling i am getting ripped off ( there are more incidents of this kind). I couldn't stand the fact that he could loose his tail (for example) while im being charged for tests that wont help.
Thank you everyone very much.

If the tail is dry and feels brittle it has died and needs to be amputated back to healthy tissue.

As far as his penis protruding have him checked for a urinary tract infection. He could have an uti and then the neutered boys will let their penis hang out.

There is also a possibility that there is some irritation from the tail problems or swelling from an infection in that area that is causing him to hold his tail in an awkward position, which might be contributing to the problem of letting his penis hang out.

Treatment and if necessary amputation of the tail back to healthy tissue and clearing up any infection that may be causing swelling at the base of the tail might actually take care of the penis issue as well.

Hi thanks for the replies, i have been watching carefully every night the 1 cm that has gone grey does not feel dry but is a little more delicate than the healthy tail, could it be starting to dry up?
I will check him for uti, he used to hiss while peeing and pooping when i purchased him but stopped soon after being on hpw complete, has never done it since.
Thanks ill have the base of the tail seen as he has two knots along the tail and now i see how that can affect the penis. Only leaves the very tip of both penis out.
Thank you again for the information.
Also by looking at the photo could you tell if the tip is drying off? Thanks

Might be able to tell, depends on the quality of the photo. Go a head and post one.

I thought I did send one but probably did it wrong, ill try now.I went to the vet and they did a fungus test on the tip and while he was sedated they pinched the tip with a fine needle to see if the tip had blood circulation and it did bleed. Also we looked closely if he could move the tip and he can curl it a little and uncurl. Im very confused but i think im going to wait.Should I? I really hope he doesnt loose it as that is one of my biggest fears. Thank you.

Keep an eye on it. If it looks brittle go back to the vet.

Thanks i am checking on it early in the mornig and when i get him out during nightime. Its my first time with gliders and its a little hard to tell, as they are very different from other pets, but i think yesterday i saw a lot more hair growth going on in the tip. During these previous days it was barely noticeable and i thought that he just didn't pull off those hairs but as i have seen more and its getting kind of hairy like the hair in our ear lobes. Ill keep checking as i cant say for sure if its growing back.
Sorry by brittle do you mean dry like a dead leaf or not dry but weak?
Thank you for all your help.

Hi wanted to mention that his tail is healthy and now all covered in black hair. I cant be happier, hair is shorter than than the rest at the tip but continues to grow. Thank you.
