Yes, she will need you to help as much as possible. The Dad plays a huge role with helping momma with her babies.

Spend as much time possible with her. Once the joey(s) get a few weeks older, you can start handling them (as long as she's comfortable with you doing so), in order to give her a break.

Make sure that you do feed her extra protein in her diet.

What would be good to be giving her extra in her diet now?

Just adding additional protein may throw off the balance of her over all diet and put a strain on her body to process the excess protein.

Generally, if you are feeding one of the widely used glider staples you can just offer an extra half serving of the staple and the fruits and vegetables.

This will allow her to continue to eat a balanced dinner -eating as much as she wants and needs to eat.

As long as there are a few leftovers in the morning you will know that she has had enough.

If you have not already chosen one of the widely used feeding plans - it would be best to do so ASAP. I have links on my web page to several widely used balanced feeding plans to help you locate the information. My own GliderKids Feeding plan is one option you might consider.

When my mommas are pregnant and nursing I add another full serving of the staple and fruits and veggies. If they are cleaning that up I add more.

Sure, you can use the extra worms to feed while your checking the babies.

If mama will let you take the baby without stressing out you can weigh it. That's also a good time to sex the joey if you haven't already.

Everybody has different opinions, but I don't think it's too early to hold her for short periods of time, 5 to 10 minutes. Just makes sure she doesn't get cold and mama glider is not stressed out by you holding her. A good friend of mine breeds gliders and she handles them from the first day OOP. It helps them to be comfortable being handled often later in life.

Ok thank you. The mom and dad are not stressed at all when I hold her. They are very comfortable with me.

I think I got the oop date wrong. My baby sugar glider just opened her eyes today. So when would that make her oop date. I finally got my scale in the mail and she weighs 24g. Is that good?

You can count back about 10 days from the day her eyes opened.

Hey michelle,

Congrats!!!! I'm in the same situation, never wanted to breed but rescued a pair and they already had joey in pouch. Kaiya's Joey came OOP monday. These are very exciting times!!!!

I noticed you are asking a lot of questions regarding husbandry. I was recommended by CandyOtte to check out www.suzsugargliders.com there are some amazing resources on joeys, development, risks etc. I highly recommend it, very thorough and well written. I believe she has a section in which other breeders have given her information on weight and age of joey and it is averaged out there. Def worth checking out. I have the entire site printed lol it's got everything you could ever need to know.

When does mom and dad start bringing baby out of the pouch to play? She will be a month out of pocket next week and they still wont let her come out of the pouch when they are out. The only time she comes out is when I take her out. Is this normal behavior for them?

I usually see mine venture out at about 6 weeks OOP. It just depends on how stingy the parents are, if you have over protective parents they will keep them in the pouch longer.
