So my wife and I like to travel and we probably won't always be able to bring our gliders with. But if we can or if we have to leave them with a friend/relative, what do people recommend for a travel cage (Temp housing) for 2 gliders?
Thanks, Phil

Would that work well for keeping that at a friend/relatives house who doesn't normally watch sugar gliders? I am asking since we are so new to this and all our friends/family are as well.

Does anyone sell the small kubertanz (sp) travel cages that buckle into the seat? This is just for travel, not to spend the night in.

Thank you but I'm looking for something much smaller and sturdier.

Some people use pop-up dog kennels for traveling. Just stand it upright and *voila* travel cage! They're $20 at Wal-mart. We picked one of these up this weekend at Walmart, I think it was just shy of $20, but that number is pretty close, here is what it looks like: This is the dimensions for the large in the picture, we went with the medium. The dimensions on ours show as follows: 32" length x 19.5" tall x 19.5" wide And another image: And here it is folded up: The girls seem to like it so far, we try and put them in it during our bonding time. The only thing they don't love is the sound the material makes when they move across it, they are fine with the netting. So we are putting some fleece on the bottom for when they walk on it. Here is a link to the manufacturers web page for it: http://www.sportpetdesign.com/our-products/travel I'd post a link to Walmart, but their link doesn't work on their site right now. Phil

Yeah, that's exactly the one I was talking about! Now what my friend does is she'll turn it up on the non-mesh square end and put the non-mesh long wide against the wall like a cage cover so they don't make as big a mess with their dinner. Her gliders don't mind the pop-up kennels at all. And they're a lot lighter and less bulky for traveling than a metal cage.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to put it up Kris, I like that idea, I will see how they take to that setup. The only reason I was still thinking of keeping it down flat, like in the pics, is so that we can put the wheel in there for them and it won't take up the entire floor space.
At least we can take them with us on vacation now!

I'd like to suggest Jana's Custom liners. I was considering going with them for my gliders vacation home, a Glide-arium. I'm waiting though because I'm considering getting even a larger option now that I have three gliders. This pop up kennel is looking like a possible option. But I'm not planning any trips so soon.
I have a custom sized Glide-arium that I'll use either vertically or horizontally depending on the situation. I do like it horizontally a little better for the same reason with the wheel taking up all the space. When I ordered the custom sized Glide-arium for vacation, I did it because when I had the girls the PP vacation cage was real nice, but I had to place it in the pop up camper before getting the door hooked up. So I decided to try the Glide-arium style and had ordered one just slightly larger than the PP cage so I could still fit it on the counter in the camper. Then I got a third glider, lol, and was glad I had one a little larger, but figured it would still be okay for weekend camping trips we took. It actually served them fairly well for even a bit longer duration, though not ideal when I traveled across country. I found myself wishing I had gone even larger, of course now I don't even have the pop up anymore.
Thanks for sharing both sizes of the large and medium kennels, it's helpful information for consideration.

So just a little update with this topic, we put the girls in the travel cage for an entire day/night to test it and them out before we head on the road. I was also giving their cage a good cleaning, so I thought this was the perfect time.
Things seemed to go well, no major incidents, only one minor thing and that was probably more my fault than anything else, an oversight really. I put in the food and water bowls and we also have one just for their staple (critter love complete). Well the staple bowl is stainless, but kind of small, it works in their cage just fine as it has a loop attached to the cage walls. But in this travel cage there is no way to do that, so they spilled their staple that night. I will just have to put that in a larger, heavier bowl they can't tip over and I think we will be all good.
They did make a bit of a mess in there with their food and stuff, but I expected that. They seemed to be happy and content in there though, once they got used to the new environment at least.
So, we will be take a 3 day trip here at the beginning of June and we will be bringing them with, I feel a bit more comfortable about that now.

You may want to get a heavier dish for them in their travel cage. It will help keep the mess down from them tipping a lighter dish.

Glad to hear it worked well, gives peace of mind before travel for you and helps acclimate them to the new space!
Sometimes we learn the hard way, lol. but better it was during a trial run and not once you started your journey. Another good reason for a trial run prior.

Yep, the heavier dish is a must and glad we know that now. The trial run was used exactly how I planned, to find this kind of stuff out.
We had been putting them in this setup from time to time, but not for long periods, and never unsupervised. This was the first time for that, and I am glad it went well.
Thanks, Phil

Do you have a kitchen/dining room for them? An upside down plasticware container with one or two holes cut out of the sides. Holes about 2 inches in diameter. Placing their food dishes inside the kitchen contains the mess they make while eating. I used an 8 cup rectangular plasticware container to make mine. It has two holes, one on the short side and the other on the opposite end of one of the longer sides. I now place two ceramic bowls in it, one with oHPW and the other with fruits and vegetables, and one small ceramic bowl that contains pellets. (Note, I only have to refill the pellets once a month when they start to go stale.)

I don't have a kitchen at this point, not sure if I will make one or not to be honest. If we plan to do more trips I probably will, if not I am not sure if it would be a good thing for their normal cage or not, might be to big and take up to much room in the cage, we have the Madagascar cage for them right now.
But thanks for the suggestion it is very much appreciated.

Just wanted to give another update on this topic. We took our trip this past week and we took the gliders with us, it was great. The hotel room we were in had a very large bathroom and this travel cage went in their perfectly. They didn't fuss at all in it and seemed to be very content sleeping in it during the day while we were out and about. Then we would take them out at night and play with them in the room (Safely) and they really enjoyed that.
Put them back in for the night while we slept and put in their food and water and staple and nothing was spilled this time since I used a heavier bowl. Still didn't do a "kitchen", but we did consider that as an option.
Thanks, Phil

So glad to hear you and your girls had a great time!
Thanks for the feedback, it really helps educate others looking into ways to travel with their gliders and what works, and what doesn't.

Thanks Terry, that is why I posted back, I didn't find a ton of information on traveling with them, but I do like to give back where I can on here for all the great advice and help that I have received so far, this is a great community.

I would be careful putting them in the bathroom at a hotel. Most hotels the toilet seat has that opening for men, a glider can get through that opening and drown in the toilet while your sleeping.
We put down a towel in the room and set the pop up kennel on that out in the room. When we go to bed we make sure the bathroom door is shut and if the crack is large we put a towel under it.
Can never be to safe.

This thread is packed full of great information. I hope it doesn't get filed where it can be found anymore as some old threads do. Maybe it can be saved somewhere when the time comes so it's always accessible in searches, what do you'll think?

Can never be to safe. This bathroom didn't have that kind of seat, but a great suggestion none the less. We weren't worried about them getting out of their travel cage, I know they can do zippers, but we put one of the small clasp on the two zippers to hold them together so they couldn't come apart. I know they could chew or get out another way, but they really didn't/don't seem to do that in here, so we weren't worried about it. We did have the lid closed on the toilet though, as you said just to be safe and just in case. I don't think I could sleep in the same room as them all night, I'm a fairly light sleeper, and even with them in the bathroom door shut and us in the bedroom with a sound machine one (White noise machine) I could still hear them from time to time since I sleep so light and it did wake me up. But I think that is good as I went in a few times just to make sure there were OK, and they always were, just up and playing like normal. Here is a pic of the clasp I used to hold the two zippers together, it was just on the end of a lanyard we had, nothing special, but it did the trick. Phil

We travel all the time with our job so we have 3 options for the girls depending on how far we are going. Option 1 : An hour or less they are in the bonding pouch in my lap if I'm not driving or when I'm driving, hanging on the headrest of the passenger seat facing the backseat, and a strap hooked to bottom of pouch to keep them from swinging. With a grape for snack each. This is their prefered mode of travel. Option 2: Up to 4 hours traveling, a softside pet carrier similar to this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/WorldPet-Soft-Sided-Pet-Carrier-Dogs/22027195 with apples or grapes as a snack. Seatbelted in back seat. Note, Dot hates the zipper noise, and sometimes will wake up and hang and crab to get out, trying to open zipper. We are looking for an alternative, as she has a tendancy to chew sometimes and I have to inspect for loose threads continually. Option 3: 3-11 hours trip. http://www.petsmart.com/small-pet/cages/...36-catid-600022I removed the wheel, tunnel and water bottle, added another dish, kept shelf, feed water , dry food and apples. Seatbelted in back seat. Hang pouch inside. we have the collapsable kennel if we are visiting and staying overnight that we put this cage in along with a wheel, kennel on it's side.. When we are traveling with our 5th wheel, they have a regular glider sized cage they stay in once we are to our destination.

Mine are good to travel all day in a bonding pouch but if I'm traveling between 11pm and 6am I'll bring a cage to put in the back seat for them to get up and stretch their legs. We're used to being out most of the day. They're in a bonding pouch while I'm at work because I have to give Zoey medicine during the day.

Wondering how best to clean the pop up kennels, as I'm considering getting one for travel.

They are pretty slippery so nothing much was sticking to mine in our limited use, but what little that did I just wiped down with a damp cloth, seemed to do the trick for us.
