PAST: So. . . I have had two brothers that I rescued a year ago. They were not fixed yet. A friend of mine's son got a male glider and decided he did not want it anymore, so I took it in. I spent 2 months introducing them. I had not taken it to the vet yet but they were getting along great and getting in the same pouch and playing. I put them together. They have been great together ever since. With that being said, it has been my realization that George is not a George but is Georgia. It is a girl. No boy, which was not what I thought. I thought he did not have a pom pom or scent glands yet because he was younger. I even inspected "it" when I got "it" for a pouch thinking why does he not have a pom pom. I did not find a pouch at the time that I could see. (Yes, I know I should have taken "it" to the vet before putting them together - regret :hit: )

PRESENT: She is still in with the boys. They have been together for 3 months. I thought it would be okay if she had a baby and I could fix the boys and keep them all a family. Fix the baby eventually if it was a boy. She seems to do a lot of hissing when someone gets in the bag with her off and on but sleep peacefully all day. She has a box with a hole and a blankie in that she loves spending time in. Not sure if she is nesting. She is bonding with me, mostly because she follows the boys smile She hangs out with both boys privately. lol

FUTURE: I have no clue what I am doing. I have read a lot of stuff, but I still have no idea. I don't even know if she is pregnant. I feel like it is just a waiting game now.

Question 1: Is the hissing normal? I am afraid to separate her at this point, especially if they will be a family, and I do not want her to lose the baby from stress.

Question 2: Is this just a waiting game at this point? Do I need to be doing anything at this time? Any prep I should be doing?

Question 3: Can Maury reveal the baby daddy?? haha

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. I love my babies mlove

I have them in a 7 ft tall x 6 feet wide x 3 feet deep TV armoire that I gutted and put the black 1/2" plastic cage stuff on front and back and have used that for the boys over the last year. The bottom didn't have anything there, so I used a board and tiled it so I can sweep and wipe out daily. They do have plenty of room but is it too much?

First - Welcome to the forum and to glider parenthood.

Unfortunately, you are not the first owner to be misled by a prior owner's identification of the glider's gender.

My first suggestion would be to have both boys neutered NOW. it is likely that they will eventually begin to fight over breeding rights with Georgia.

If Georgia is pregnant you may not see the lumps in her pouch for a month or so when they are big enough to be seen easily.

If you wait until she has joeys OOP or even close to coming OOP it is likely that you will already have MORE joeys on the way because gliders often mate again about the time joeys are OOP. She could even have joeys in pouch long before the first joeys are weaned.

There is no way for you to know which male is the father of any joeys produced. Gliders have a unique reproductive system with 2 uterus so it is actually very possible that two joeys could have different fathers.

To prepare yourself for raising joeys and for caring for them if they are rejected - this web page will have a great deal of useful information.

If your cage is working well for you, I would not change the glider's home. You may want to hang the sleeping pouch or nest box lower when the joeys are close to coming OOP to prevent injuries from falls since it appears from your description that the sides of the enclosure are wood and a joey might not have anything to grip if it crawls out in an area away from the mesh front and back of the enclosure.

Be sure you have your gliders on a well balanced diet and offer an extra half portion of the staple, fruits and vegetables while Georgia is carrying and nursing joeys so she can eat the extra nutrients she needs.

Thank you so much for the advice. I better get my appointments made. It is $70 each for neuter. I will keep you updated!
