I have 2 beautiful healthy and happy gliders, cosmo and molly. unfortunately though they have breeded twice and despite all efforts, research, and planning they have rejected both joeys. we have done extensive research on diets making sure molly was producing the right milk, took measures to ensure the environment in the cage was neither too hot or cold. Did we do something wrong?
We have them separated currently so we can figure out if we are doing something wrong. Both passings have been very hard for us and we worry it may affect them as well.

I'm not a breeder or very experienced, so this is simply book learning, but I've read in a couple sources that (like humans) some gliders are just bad parents & will not make good breeders as a result.

Are the joeys big enough to bottle feed when they get rejected?

How much does momma weigh? Start adding extra chicken and egg to her feedings--basted in CL Complete. Fat mommma is happy momma.

Just some ideas

We would need to look at several factors.

  • How old is your pair?
  • How long have you had them?
  • What diet are they being fed?
  • How many times have they rejected the joeys?
  • What age were the joeys when rejected?
  • Were they cannibalized?

As posted it is possible they will not make good parents or will not be good parents together, however, the answers to the questions may give us some insight.

Karen is right some do not want to be parents or be parents with that mate.

I would pair them with different mates if it was me to see who doesn't want to be a parent.

I apologize for the long wait, things have been busy here.
The joeys were less than a week oop both times when rejected. Neither were cannibalized, just pushed out of nest and neglected. We unfortunately did not realize they were being neglected quick enough to attempt bottle feeding, it was something I had prepared for.
the only reason we wanted them to mate was so that we could have an ongoing blood line for the inevitable day that they pass on. We have decided that we are just going to get our male neutered because we cannot handle the heartbreak of another joey rejection. We will continue to adopt and care for gliders, just no more breeding for us. We have a great deal of love for the cute furry balls of love, but we have realized that where we live there are a lot of people who think they can raise them but fail in doing so. We will just stick to saving and caring for those unwanted and unfortunate babies.

This sounds like a good decision for this pair, and it will let them live happy as a bonded couple.

You have a plan for the future, and we wish you much success with that plan.

Still look forward to seeing you on the board agree
