I think I am the odd wo-man out; but we have had a heat rock in our gliders cage for quite a while, and never had any problems. The house does seem cold to me at night and I didn't want my suggies to get too cold. No we did not get the large one though; and did check the output to see how hot it would get before we bought it. We wrapped it securely in t-shirt material many times so that they could not get to the rock itself. It is smaller and does not get "dangerously hot" as many have stated. I don't want to open a can of worms for sure but just want to throw that out there. Also the rock is towards the back of the cage (on a plastic shelf) and the cord cannot be reached from inside the cage. Has anyone else actually used the heat rocks? After reading this I may re-evaluate this weekend. :/

I didn't even use them when I had my Leopard gecko and Rankin's Bearded Dragon. I just used the lights and positioned rocks or basking area under those and made several temp checks prior throughout the day.
For use with other animals, I certainly wouldn't use them. I'm glad you haven't had any issues in your time using one, but honestly, if your house gets that chilly at night, there are better heating/warming options out there.

I am new, so I have no opinion on this matter yet. But I came across this video with this guy who is a president of association of sugar glider vets He says heat rocks are safe, and he's never seen a case where sugar glider got burned or electrocuted by a heat rock. Is this guy trustworthy?

Hi VBclick, We do not support the videos on that site, plus a lot of those videos are outdated. Sugar gliders old enough to be away from mom and dad do not need a heat source unless they are sick. At that point I would use an exterior heat source such as a heat lamp (where they can't reach the cord or bulb). I myself have theses: http://www.avitec.com/Cage-Heaters-AviTemp-Infrared-Heat-Panels-s/50.htm I also have parrots and had these for the parrots so I also use them for the gliders when needed. Everything is on the outside of the cage, they can't touch the panel or get to the cord. I hope this helps.

I am getting 2 sugar gliders, but unfortunately not at the same time, one will be ready to go in a few days, and the other will be ready in mid February. Our family room (where the gliders will be) is kind of chilly, so I was wondering if I will need a heat source while my first glider is alone?

Get some fleece remnants from JoAnnes Fabrics cut them up into little squares 3x3 or 4x4 inches and put them in their sleeping pouch. You can also cover three sides of the cage with a fleece cover. That will also help contain the mess as they do throw their food around at times.
What temperature is the family room?

What temperature is the family room? Oops, I didn't see this reply right away. My family room is around 67-69 degrees in the winter. I don't know is that is too cold.

The general rule that most people seem to follow is that if you, as a human, are comfortable in the temperature, then the gliders should be also.
If you keep it at 67-69 and you need a blanket, then the gliders would also, so give them some extra fleece as well.
Hope that helps. Phil
