So found out one of my new babies has Giardia (sp?). I've got something from the vet to feed them both, medication wise, and to treat both instead of just the one. Hopefully it clears up in the next 2 weeks. Any precautions I should take in the meantime? I'm just starting to bond and was planning on doing some fist time tomorrow, then sitting in my tub and letting them crawl around the next week....any worries with this illness and them?

We can catch Giardia from them, so practice good hand washing practices.

Deep clean the cage, wheel and all fleece.

Here is a saved post on Giardia: Here.

Wow I'm really freaking out about all this after reading the horror stories ha! I'm going to deep clean tonight, and they have a new cage coming in a day or two, so will give everything a deep clean then as well. I am calling the vet today as it is difficult to get them to take their medicine. They know what the dropper is now but haven't bonded with me, so they run all over the cage everywhere so I can't get to them and refuse the dropper, little buggers!! They have stopped crabbing at me in the cage now though which I see as a positive, and both were very active so i hopefully can overcome the Giardia in them first time over. I'm continuing with bonding, just excessive cleaning and hand washing. They both prefer separate pouches so at least they are keeping cleaning away from each other. Fingers crossed it all goes well!!!

Also as a question, since I can't be the first person to go through this: they have not bonded to me yet, so getting ahold of them is difficult. The medicine needs to be administered every 12 hours. This morning I couldn't get the little girls to stop or even get ahold of them to give them the medicine. Once I get them I can wrap them like a burrito, but thoughts on catching them in the cage? I don't want to grab them, and I thought maybe throwing a piece of fleece over them?
Thanks!

I don't have any experience with this, however, I have read where people have hidden meds in treats same as they do with toddler humans who refuse.

You could also try getting them just after they go to bed to roll them up like a burrito. Might be much easier than the chase around the cage and less traumatic for them. Of course, expect them to catch onto that trick as well ohwell

when we went thru the giardia med's back in '08, one thing that did happen was sissie lost her appetite, so she was loosing weight. We fed her more foods that would help her gain weight, along w/the hpw mixture of that time.

ensure & avocadoes would be a good start. But, if they should maybe get dehydrated, which could happen, then the ensure would be a no-no, as the stuff will harden in their tummies, & make them constipated.

If you feed mealies, you could inject the med in the mealie & feed that way. they have to get all the med at each dose.

There is alot more info on diets for suggies that are sick w/different ailments than when we went thru it, mine didn't make it, I do pray yours will.

if you are going a new vet, also does he know what you are feeding? is there bee pollen I anything? At one time, way back then, bee pollen could be misidentified as giardia.

Hang I there with giving meds. Can you catch them at medicine time while they are in pouch? I use a large piece of fleece anytime I have to catch mine. It also gives them something to hang on to and get mad at.

I'm not sure how you're holding them to administer but I roll mine in 1 hand over on their back in my palm, belly up and hold their head between forefinger ( on top or back of head) and and thumb under chin. Insert meds just behind front teeth and back teeth is a gap of gums. Be sure not to squirting directly down throat as it may go into lungs.

I am concerned that if you diet has b=pollen, that doc knew that.

Hang in there. Try just talking and singing lullabies to them softly more than just when it is meds time. A soothing voice goes a long way.

Please keep us posted on their progress and I'm gonna dig around the archives for some more ideaa.

So sorry you have to go through this...

I haven't dealt with this, thankfully, but I did have a little bearded dragon that I had to medicate when he was a baby. I used to inject the meds into a wax worm. Wax worms are fatty, but a treat for dragons, so maybe would be for gliders as well.

Also, I agree that shortly after they go to bed and maybe again when they're in their pouches would be a good time to try giving meds.

Good luck!

First of all, I just want to say a big thank you to everyone!!! It has been so nice to get help here, as from experience on many forums across the webs this is the nicest!!

Here's where it stands: deep cleaned everything today. Still need to get bleach, but wiped down everything with hot water and washed and dried all bedding and bags.

I did sit with them in the shower today. The whole bathroom is glider-proofed, but the shower helped contain and not be such a large area. One, who doesn't have a name yet, came out after a bit of crabbing and smelled my hands a bit, tried to jump around and climbed across my hand and shoulders, even going so far as to VERY tentatively jump onto my arm when offered. There was some poop in these bags, so it was wiped up and cloroxed off the table and all clothes were washed.

Wicket, named after the Ewok even though she's a girl, crabbed the whole time and didn't come out. I can already tell she is the problem. Hold with all bark, but still a small bite when I went in for some fist time, and after the second nibble got freaked out and withdrew my hand slowly, hopefully fooling them into thinking it was by choice.....

The Giardia. I contacted the breeder. Her vet did a batch as well as samples from both parents of my girls and all results came back negative for her. It's also strange only one of my girls has it.....waiting for more in depth call from my vet tomorrow. Theo current diet doesn't have any bee pollen in it, and was a sample that she literally pooped on a stick at the vets office for. Still treating as though it is happening, but also trying to give them bonding time with me since that's the goal. So far both are eating and are VERY active so I can't wait for their wheel to come in!! The problem is this: my hours are hectic this week, where I leave at 5:30am every morning. In order to do meds every 12 hours, I can get them just fine at 5pm at night......it's the AM when it's still their "daytime" and are wide awake. I'm going to try fleece throw tomorrow, and hopefully maybe I'll catch them in a nap. Then I roll them like a burrito, get my theme and forefinger around the head hold the other legs down and squirt right behind the front teeth.

Sorry for the essay. These are my updates. I'm all over the place regretting getting them, then happy, then sad, then confused......as a 26 year old man it's a bit embarrassing but then they look at me while they eT and it's adorable.

I am so thankful for all the help and I'll keep you updated. I m gonna try a bunch of the tricks, and have some avocado and stuff on hand in case one takes a turn for the worse fingers crossed they don't.

There is so many unknowns with Giardia. One vet at the vet college said that every pet and people harbor Giardia and that in times of stress, such as weaning the joeys and sending them to a new home can knock their immune system down and allows the Giardia to flourish.

Here is an article about Giardia: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/giardia-in-dogs

So I went for a fecal this morning. We are clear! She said they were clear at this point and it was ok to stop the meds treatment. She said to keep staying clean and watch them over the weeks because it is known to resurface and come back in a crazy fast way. Luckily, my other one didn't contract it, and it didn't seem to affect them in any negative way, drinking, eating, pooping, activity, etc.

She mentioned that sometimes it can come back and so a fecal might show a small amount being shed and that it doesn't worry her unless it starts to pick back up or affect them. Has anyone heard this?

Anyway, glad my babies are cleared and the bonding isn't between them, me and a fleece blanket and syringe!!!
