Now YOU talk about me.

Hey everyone. Sorry I have been on hiatus for a while.
Big changes...haven't been able to write much.

Recently escaped the Arizona desert to move to to the Pacific NW. Didn't find much gold overall but the experience of finding my own gold-producing spot was gratifying.

The power of SCIENCE prevails over the power of BUBBASAID

So I feel I have gotten all I need from the high desert.
Maybe that's a rationalization, but as is usually the case when I rationalize, I don't care.

With its stark beauty, its amazing ecology, and it's abundant mineral wealth...

The desert sucks donkey balls.

It's important to note here (and I am sure this is not news) but there were other reasons for my departure from the desert.

Specifically another member here on GC--Stef.
We started talking about RV life with Gliders--and we just kept talking.

So...the cliff notes..

I somehow lack the words to Shakespeare this, so I will just say it.

We are all gooey in love, and we look forward to making you all ill from watching us.

I have pulled all the data cards from Sugar Squadron's tablets--BECAUSE I THINK THIS WAS ENGINEERED BY GLIDERS.
I do see here that Athena recently watched Sleepless in Seattle twenty-five times.
Time for some parental control settings...
Where is my tinfoil hat?

The desert didn't want to let go easily though...

Here comes the weird but true...

As much as I love the RV life, I hate moving this beast. Triple-towing something this size is a white knuckle affair.

Ominously, as I had previously left Dolan Springs, in route to my more current loc in the Phoenix area, I witnessed a grisly accident.
It was a big truck--pulling a rig startlingly similar to my own.
In perfect weather, and in minimal traffic, this guy had somehow lost control and disintegrated this entire rig in a rollover accident.
Someone did not walk away from that one. :-(
I was going south. It was thankfully in the other land.

So now we are headed North...
Brutus is dutifully pulling the rig at a speed of 55 mph...
And out of nowhere is a huge dip...

Nasty crashing noises, and the triple tow bounces around in a whiplike motion (Doing some serious redecorating inside the trailer.) I have "browned my trou", but the whole thing somehow holds together.
No crazy noises...no expanding cloud of machine parts sailing off the road behind me....
Whew! Dodged a bullet there!
...Oh oh...
People behind me are falling back...
A guy in a pickup truck passes me quickly--pointing and yelling something unintelligible...

Not sure what he was screaming, but I don't think he was asking if I had any Grey Poupon...

Off the road fast--not much room...just barely off the white line--and not fond of the slant we are leaning at off the shoulder.
Jump out and run to the rear. ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM! Timing the gaps in the traffic.
The force of the dip had popped Bunny's trailer right off the ball.
If the safety chains hadn't been on there, I would have lost the trailer--in traffic.
However, when I hit the brakes, the unrestrained trailer slammed into the back of the rig--destroying the light connection, and the trailer jack.

The rear straps holding Bunny onto the trailer had broken. Bunny had gone airborne, and had come back down on the trailer at a angle. Still on the trailer...but not by much.
Traffic is whizzing by, and I am trying to put this whole thing back together--fast.
I start levering Bunny back into position on the trailer using a ratchet strap. Gets her moved just enough to be drive-able.

Re-strapping bunny as fast as I can, I realize two more uncomfortable things:
1) Somehow, I am covered in gasoline.
2) Somehow, a brush fire has sprung up about 200 yards behind the rig, and its burning it's way toward me...

Couldn't even think of an appropriate curse...

Rapidly putting together in my head what must have happened:

When we hit the dip, everything went airborne on the trailer.

The fuel can on top of Bunny had broken loose, and was hanging upside down, dumping fuel down the highway.
And then, the huge showers of sparks from the trailer tongue bouncing off the asphalt over and over again, must have ignited it...

Why am I not on fire?
Move your [censored] or you will be...

All we have to do now is get the trailer back onto the ball...and start moving away from the encroaching fire...

This is where,I discover the trailer jack has been damaged by the trailer ramming into the rig. It won't turn. The trailer tongue is resting on the ground. The trailer is fully loaded...with Bunny and other equipment.

But it's right next to the ball hitch...if I can just lift it...

Traffic is whizzing by at 70 miles per hour on the left. I am between the trailer and the rig, trying to reconnect it.
And everyone coming this way is looking at the fire...
Just KNOW I am about to get hit, and smashed into grout between the trailer and the rig.
Between the trailer and the rig is not where I want to be.
Have to do this fast.
LIIIIFT....
Failed to get it onto the ball. But somehow managed to get my hand stuck under the trailer tongue--and unable to lift it.
Now I am STUCK...between the trailer and the rig...but not for long.
HOONNNNK!!!!
%$^$%& #%$^$#@%&#&%^!!!
Had to leave some skin on the pavement. Wrap with cloth and duct tape. On the bright side, I was already soiled from before. Look! I'm saving underwear!

Ok...idea. Start running loads of stuff; anything heavy, from the garage, around the NON-highway side--to stack it onto the back of Bunny.
Bag of rice, bag of beans, tool kit, big boxes of rocks.
Stacked onto the back--enough junk to counterweight, and allow me to lift the tongue of the trailer back onto the ball.
Hooked up! Lights destroyed, but hooked up.

Fire dept has arrived. We LOVE you guys!

Trying to look nonchalant as I finish strapping down.

<whistling tunelessly> Um...who me? No sir...that was here when I got here...no idea...

Shuffle all the junk back into the garage.

What is all this stuff off the side of the road next to me?
Its the REMAINS OF THE OTHER RIG I passed before...
Creepy. I guess I know what happened to him now.

For the next 1400 miles my hands were frozen to the wheel in a grip of death...and the window always stayed open a crack--to listen for trouble...

Which we found in Zillah, Washington.

Just 4 hours away from the campground, the helpful state police stop me.

Evidently triple tow is not allowed in the state of Washington.

They make me drop the trailer in a parking lot, four hours from my goal.

Teaching the dogs some new words as I pull out of the parking lot, leaving Bunny and all my prospecting gear behind. It would take another whole day to go back and pick her up.

Evidently I am distracted enough that I forget to put on my seat belt. And within **200 YARDS** I am pulled over again by ANOTHER helpful law enforcement officer, who helpfully slaps me with a nice ticket and another hour delay.
Don't you guys have a half mile minimum or something...c'mon!

And why is Washington so HOT...where is the AC?
It's broken.
<sigh> Adventure, adventure, adventure...can't I just fight some orcs or something? I wanna talk to my agent.

It's a happy ending though...
I finally arrived at the campground, and Stef got me all set up next door to her.
We have a little convoy now. :-) <cue C.W. McCall>

I have a job.
My first ever Workcamping gig; my title is Ranger.
ONLY YOU, [censored]!!! <CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!>
Going to be fun.
Yay for money!
And YAY for a TOTAL lack of CACTUS and venomous snakes!
And YAY for Stef...
...and two dogs and SEVEN (OMG) gliders.

Thank you GC. :-)

Yes,its true. This crazy romantic man drove all that way, risking life and limb and highway fires, just to be with me. And I'm so happy he did!

We haven't introduced our respective glider households to each other yet, but Dave and I often interact with each others critters, so we bring the scent of foreign gliders home. We'll get them all in the same room eventually to see how that goes. smile

Hey Comerade, I'm glad you are safe and sound!

And happy! I'm sure it was worth it!

We are home now with no major issues in our trip. Other than the 30- 45 mph headwinds and south winds all at once. 2 days 705 miles. Mileage dropped from 13mpg to 7.5 mpg. Higer diesel prices... Could only drive 62 mph.

LOL It's not all my fault! With the approach of Memorial Day weekend (busiest camping weekend of the year), it's been all hands on deck here at the campground. Dave has been doing his hero thing and pitching in with every department (working 6 days a week) to get everything ready for the sell-out crowd that will be descending upon us over the next few days.

I'll have to let Dave report on the condition of his leg, but it's looking better and better to me.

I still haven't gotten around to a permanent solution for glider-proofing my dash, but draping a big blanket over the whole thing has been working so far. Any time the furries go near the front of the rig during playtime, I herd them back towards safer areas. But these days, all they really want to do is run around the carpeted ceiling anyway.

Photo attached, as requested. smile

Woo Hoo! Now we know what you both look like. Nice couple!

It has been so dead on the board without him posting. He needs to train the fuzzies to post updates.

Thank you Stef for the pic!

You both look happy!

Carpet on the ceiling? Wow! I bet they love that!

When we head to Mississippi, I plan to make some ladders up high so the girls can travel across the living room. We have a ceiling fan and light we never use and my plan is to make it long enough to drape from one side to the other.

Comrade, get your fuzzbutts in gear! They are behind on their saga... :comppunch:

Hey all!
Sorry for the delay. As Stef said, they have been putting me to work over here.

RV life gets better as we go. This is my first workcamping experience, and it’s a surprise every day.
The most surprising thing so far is the people you meet working minimum wage, scrubbing toilets.

In addition to the young folks working their way up, or folks trying to find their way (which you expect at a minimum wage job), there’s this weirdly high concentration of societal ex-patriates who have fled the rat race, and now live life small. The guy scrubbing the toilet next to me, was a manager at a major tech company, for instance. High earning heavy hitters who decided freedom was more important than climbing the golden ladder. The maintenance guy is a borderline genius, (and maybe borderline crazy) raising his family off the grid—forages almost all his food from the forest around us.
There’s meth addicts trying to start a new life. There’s nauseatingly optimistic overachieving high school kids who kick corporate butt like people twice their age.
A colorful cast of inspiring characters, all hiding up here in the woods.
Who is John Galt?

The dogs even got a job! Most mornings we are out trying to scare the geese off the pond area. Can’t have them nesting here, so they use dogs to run the geese out…as they would at an airport. This has met with limited success. My aging border collies do great until they get to the water. Then it’s swim time, and the geese are forgotten. But for that first 10 seconds they look like real coursers. The geese grudgingly give way until we leave.

Sugar Squadron; or rather, Sugar Almost-Squadron, is down one member.
Since mama lost the baby, we are now five. Will never fill that 6th spot now. :-(
Aria has been surfing Travelocity for cheap tickets to Florida. I’m not going to tell her she could just go Fed-ex.
Lock your windows, Peggy.

The gliders and I are once more arguing over their rights to the Playhouse. (also known as upper storage). I am now searching for a garage sale Barbie playhouse or some such. Going to get serious and paint it up with some good plastic-bonding paint, and make it look like something…else.
FINE! You can have HALF the upper storage.
So what will probably happen, is I will line half the upper storage compartment with something detergent-friendly, and wall the rest off for storage. Then I think I will put the Barbie house up there and perhaps another wheel or spinner, and tiny disco. Then some vines to make a nice path down to the cage.
So ok…you can have the upper storage, if you keep it clean.
HAHAHA.

So….much…cleaning. The RV has gone to hell. Sleeping on the futon because the bed is piled up with stuff.
Going from zero to 60 on the work schedule has been taking it out of me. So I have been just throwing junk everywhere and not cleaning.
You know you have hit the bottom when you find a fly dead in your coffee and you just flick it away and keep drinking…

HEY—off topic. I know glider-lovers are often creative types. Does anyone know where I could get some cheap used lapidary gear? Saws, tumblers, polishers, that kind of thing. Stef loves gems and minerals the way I love relics and metals, so we are trying to set up a small lapidary shop in the rig. Hopefully a good source of income down the road. And a hand pan drum. Or other steel tongue drum. Just hoping…hail Mary.

Now that I have them all rounded up, I will start walling them off from the last (I THINK) glider hidey holes in the RV. There’s a place they have been able to get behind the fridge, and a place they can hide on top of the kitchen slide. This is going to really restrict their range—will make playtime even better.

Sugar Squadron is super social, as I have discovered. Justin introduced himself to one of the other staffers without warning—waffled the side of her head. Some freaking out occurred, but no one was injured.

How do I keep people from continually coming over to visit? “Oh yeah, don’t let them near your face. They bite like a freakin’ nail gun.”

The relationship between dogs and gliders continues to develop.
Chelsea has started trying to do sleepovers—with her face. She is not very welcome, because of her breathing and drooling. The gliders tolerate it for a while, but eventually move to drive her out. She doesn’t understand…and it hurts her feelings. 
Charlie has discovered that if he wedges himself under the futon, he can be right in the line of the main glider migration path between the cage and the big curtains. He has trouble getting out though…and sometimes needs me to help him.

Otherwise everything is…well...amazing. I know…’wait for the wheel’, but I’m riding this wave of good fortune for all it’s worth.

The leg is down to an annoyance. Still a hole about 3/16” deep and 1” diameter, but the hole into the infected area is closed up. Wore my Batman boots yesterday, even!
It would be farther along but, the gliders keep attacking it.
Yeah. 
And they must have realized that the daddy-tree juice supply was going to run out, because they have recently redoubled their interest in the leg, and any other wound I may have.
Everyone up here is talking about Bigfoot, and I am living with 5 little Chupacabras. Another reason I walled off the bedroom.

Overall though, everything is fantastic. Stef and I are getting ready to intro the two groups of gliders—pouch swapping and such. Going to be insane watching 7 little fuzzbutts bounce around the room—like being in a giant popcorn popper. I wonder if we could pull a rope between the windows of the two RVs…and let the gliders go back and forth?

Hey…has anyone ever tried a thing called a Bedazzler? Does it use glue or little spikes?

Happy glider-ing all!

>>> The relationship between dogs and gliders continues to develop

It really is an amazing sight. The dogs are 110% focused on the gliders. Whether in their cage or scampering around the RV, the gliders are the objects of intensely fixated stares from the two devoted doggies. (If I were that tiny creature under scrutiny from the giant beasts above me, I'd be too petrified to move.) But the gliders seem to recognize the worshipful adoration for what it is, and go about their business with no bother. smile

Gee, lots to ponder!

Barbie house: Thrift store, goodwill, Craigslist, Once upon a child (Google in your area), DAV thrift store, Salvation Army, yard sales and so on...

This will work:

https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&ai=...8ISw&adurl=

Basically it's a vented dryer vent. I have considered this for linking two cages in two different rooms together.

Sorry for the loss of baby. :hbreak:

The issue with your gliders getting behind the slideout: Have you tried stripping a fun noodle (the colorful long tube things kids float with in water) into long strips and use as filler? We use them for insulation.

Now I will have to reread and post again... To be continued:

ComradeFluffyPants, gliders love to peel off scabs. Tucker was a master, before you knew he was doing it he was ripping it like ripping off a bandage. Little Heathen!

Wow...ok.
I am glad it's not just me. Was afraid that I had somehow warped them into little psycho flesh eaters.

This is good. Will help me lose weight and save on glider food costs.

Oh... I might need one of those tunnels. Winky loves any opportunity to tunnel (she likes running up the inside of my sleeves, too), and I think she would go nuts for that one! Thanks for the link, Dawn! smile

Thrift stores &/or yard sales are great sources for finding toys like a barbie house. Once Upon a Child is kind of pricey out of all of these, but still cheaper than brand new.

Also, check ebay.

Ok this subject is really gross, but I gotta ask...

Do they eat the scabs once they rip them off?

Karen, please forgive me...

I don't know, Tucker only did the little ones on my arms. I sure wouldn't let him near anything different.

Yeah they eat them.
And then they the keep going.
Haven't had the force of will to see how far they will go yet.

Glider plastic surgery. Why pay 24k for liposuction?
Have rubbed honey all over my beer gut.
Some heavy sedation and it should be gone in 24 hours...
Got 911 on speed dial.

Seriously though. Daddy Tree has become the 6th food group. :-(

Sugar Group: Nectar, Ice Cream, Popsicles

Treats Group: Yogies, Papaya, Dog Drool, Pumpkin Seeds

Valuables Group: Electronics, Cameras, Clothing, Jewelry, Books, (Out of print, autographed, limited-edition reference books are best)

Electrical Group: Cords, Covers, Switches, CDs/DVDs

Household Group: Furniture, Bath soaps, Decor Items

Daddy Tree Group: Daddy Tree Parts, Daddy Tree Sap

"Silly Rabbit, you can't have nice things AND a puppy."

Have to round these little vandals up. And get to packing...

Going to take Stef on a ride in Bunny. :-)
Don't tell her, but I might try and scare her a little to get her to hold my hand. ;-)
Our first treasure outing today! Gold (Wet Sluicing), Garnets, Tourmaline, Soapstone, Blue Agate.
Hopefully we return with much loot
OR....you know...at least *some loot*.
Any loot really.
I'm past being picky.
Adding rock hounding and lapidary to our arsenal is going to be a nice income boost--if I can get the web page working, and get the shop set up.

"Arrow get down here or I am bringing out the Swiffer!"

Happy Glider-ing all!

Don't forget the spongey/foamy/rubbery food group! My gliders can't resist anything with those textures. They even started chewing the raised rubber lettering off my water bottle.

(Oh, and I'm looking forward to that scary ride in the dune buggy as an excuse to hold Dave's hand!) wink
