Hello,

I went to the vet yesterday because my glider had a swollen paw. No noticable pain, but the glider is more passive than useally.

The vet gave me antibiotics, probiotics and some anti septic.

Today I noticed that the paw more swollen, and underneath full of puss. I attempted to have a closer look and then a lot of the puss came popping out. Since it already bursted I managed to gently squeeze out most if not all of it. I put on some anti septic after.

Do you think I should go back to the vet, or wait a few more days to see if it works out? I was told to give antibiotics for one week, and come back if it didnt go away.

At the very least give your vet a call and see what he/she advises.

I agree with Karen. I would also do warm compresses if he or she will let you.

Plus keep the grate of your cage super clean until his paw is healed up.

A little update;

vet told me to keep giving antibiotics, probiotics and use anti septic untill all the antibiotcs where used up and come back if it got no better.

Attached you kan see the current pictureof the paw.

What worries me is that her weight is 10g lower than of the other glider, and her fur doesnt look that good. She is more reserved, but still somewhat active at night. From what I have seen she eats and drinks, but she doesnt tough the veggies or fruits that I use with critterlove complete.

Currently her weight is 43g, compared to 53 on the other glider which is roughly the same age.

That is a significant weight loss.

I would also think the swelling should be a little less.

Are you feeding treats?

Is she is her poo semi solid?

How are you giving antibiotics?

Feather what do you think?

I'm not sure if it's weight loss or lack of gaining weight.

Im feeding her fruits like banana and apple which she liked very well, aswell as yoghurt drops and naturel yoghurt. She also drinks as she should.

Her poo is semi solid as far as I have noticed yes.

I put the antibiotics in/on the food and give it to her directly. I apply anti septic 2-3 times a day.

She used to be very active and social, but is much more reserved/afraid now than before.

What are your suggestions? Should I go back before the antibiotics are done or wait until they are used up? Prb 4-5 days

Are they eating everything including all of the staple?
If so give them more.

I highly recommend using the salad mixtures on the Critterlove.com web site.

It would be better if you were giving the medications with a syringe instead of putting it in her food.

You could contact your vet an ask about a shot of Covenia.

If she is sharing her food with others, she may not be getting enough antibiotics.

When I get home (working overnight), I will try to take a pic of the easiest way to hold them and to administer medication. I will be giving apple juice. smile

So when I got home, the girls were very happy to see me...

This is the best pic I could take and hold Fiona at the same time. If I had a 2nd hand I would have held srynge to the side of her mouth.

Sorry for late reply, I've just been very busy these last few days.

Okey, here we go; I use a salad mix by critter love, but they dont eat ANYTHING of it! Only one of the gliders eats some of the peas and apples, but the rest is untouched from what I've observed.

I tried with various fresh fruits and vegetables, and they barely smell it and maybe lick it a few times.

Also, the critter love complete "soup" is also not very popular. They never completely empty it, there is always something left.

When I bought them I recieved some italian staple as mentioned before, and that they really love. But I stopped feeding them that after I recived the complete one from critterlove.

Regarding the antibiotics: I put 1-2 drops (syringe) on the lower side of the yoghurt drops and make sure it doesnt spill off. She will eat the whole thing, but it takes a while.

I will try feeding the syringe directly, but she doesnt really allow me to hold her unless I use force.

As for the paw now, it doesnt look worse, maybe a tiny bit better. She's been on antibiotics for nine days now. The vet I'm using not that experienced with sugar gliders, but he have treated a lot of squirrels and other exotic animals. He has 3 clients in total that have been to him with gliders.

My location is Croatia, in the town of Split smile

Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it.

Thank you for getting back to us.

The pic I sent is of a bonded glider. Her name is Fiona. We have had her 3 years. But she was a handful to put in the position that she is familiar with when it comes to medication. It took 6 pics to get it right. Lol!

The vet will have to flavor the medication in order for her to take it that way.

How do you serve their critterlove? Do you feed separately from salad?

Yes thank you for the picture!

I will visit the vet tomorrow morning and see what he says.

I serve the critterlove in one bowl, and the salad in another one.

Current situation:

https://imgur.com/a/r3Mn7

She's been on antibiotics for three weeks. The paw is less inflammed, and contains less puss and more clear fluid.

If I remember correctly the antibiotics that were given is amoxicilin. And to be honest I don't think it's the right antibiotics as it should have cleared up a bit faster. The infection seems to be going down, and her mood and activity level is better. I think her own immune system have created the antibodies needed, and that she is healing. Just to be sure I have contacted my vet about this to see what he says.

Is this still an open wound? Or just swelling?

Just swelling. I have drained it from time to time. But the last 4-5 days there has barely been any puss or fluid

It may have been just that infected. If the wound went septic, it is a long healing process(human experience only)

I'm sorry I'm not real familiar with different antibiotics, let alone what is available where you are.

sounds like it is getting better, hopefully someone else will be able to help.
