*hope this is the right place if not move to right place*
so gizmo. was about 94 grams and is now 76 grams. he was attacked and suffered bite wound to the head. causing enucleation and they have kept him in ICU. he does sometimes try to test water or food they had him syringe feeding which he sometimes tolerates but has dropped significant weight, and struggles to keep temp currently in an incubator. he is at Windcrest animal hospital of Delaware.

we have brought his mate in multiple times to visit and he still seems to decline. and he DID have one good day in which he claimed around a cage we brought. however now he seems to just stay in the pouch and not doo much likely due to lack of nutrition or other factors.

he has a shiver like a walk and shakes. and does the counterclockwise circular walk ordeal I read is frequent to neural issues. other than that he seemed peaceful when he took a rest on his girlfriend (cookie) no tremor and normal breathing it appeared.

they say if he continues he likely will have to be put down so he doesn't die of malnourishment. we are going 4/28/19 to finalize treatment strategy if any for Gizmo. so any good advice would be appreciated.

medicine: list of taken
Buprenex
Meloxicam
enrofloxacin
Hyaluronidase/normosol-em
artifical tears ointment
leadbeater's feeding formula

laser therapy small-em

surgery, enucleation of right eye.

currently syringe feed and subcutaneous fluid.
foods as taken.

i really want to save this glider. but the vet and the penn specialist is saying its a lost cause.

i really don't especially after talking with another friend of mine think it should be a lost cause or he needs to be put down if we could just boost his eating i think we can deal with the rest. i mean we can give him special toys, food. syringe feed and heat lamp. but if he keeps losing weight we can't fix that. don't care if he breeds or anything again. just want to keep him at this point.

I'm so sorry you have been faced with this ordeal and decisions that need to be made.

How long has it been since his accident?

I have no experience with what you are going through, just wanted to offer a little support. If it were my choice, I would question and make sure they have tried everything. Physical therapy can do wonders. Then I would consider quality of life for my glider. This is a real hard decision, and I hope someone with experience can help. Please keep is posted.

it was about a week ago Thursday I think. last sat or Sunday he started doing really well climbing the cage and all. but now its like almost dead or out of it. I not sure but I think PT is not in the mix. that day yeah would make sense as next steps but now no.

either due to continued failure to maintain nutrition or other reasons he is quite frail and I would think the critical need is nutrition and caloric intake. I think the syringe feedings isn't working well enough for him to gain weight. in other words despite what they had him on. they syrup and syringe with subcutaneous he is losing weight...

I have CBD oil. and I was even debating getting THC would that maybe help??? I could think it might trigger his desire to eat again? any one ever use THC or CBD in a way for neuro or eating issues?

I'm not familiar with cbd oil other than what I have read. It is toxic to humans is extreme high doses, and the plant it derives from is toxic and not safe for gliders. Cbd oil is a high concentration of the plant it comes from. I would not recommend this at all. I would recommend your vet having a consult with another vet who specializes in sugar gliders. I'm curious what is in this leadbetter formula. If he is having issues with digestion too.

So he losing weight. Does he potty/ poo well?

He's having issues with maintaining body heat?

Can he swallow on his own? If he recovers, he will always require some special needs. That could become a 24 hour commitment.

I am so very sorry you and your little one are going through this. It is evident this is breaking your heart and want to do more to try to save him.

Although you didn't say how the attack happened (whether it was another glider or another pet), this was indeed a very serious injury. It seems there was some neurological damage that controls some of his major functions. I'm just making observations from what you have posted about how he is loosing weight plus how he walks and does not eat.

If he has been at the vet all this time, alone, it could be this is also effecting how he is responding to any treatment they have tried. Sometimes gliders heal much better when they are put back with their colony or mate. You mentioned he seemed more peaceful when his mate came to visit.

There are those times when no matter what we want, nothing can be done to extend the life of these precious little ones. If he would not be in further danger to return him to his mate, if he were mine, I would give him the chance to either heal at home or pass peacefully as long as you know he is not in pain.

Reading your post, you talk about his mate and his girlfriend, Cookie. Are they one and the same?

Your little guy has spent enough time alone at the vet, IMO without anyone who really loves him. It is obvious that you do very much, and he needs that right now regardless of the outcome.

We have been bringing cookie his mate frequently to the vet for about half hour visits about every other day. He was unfortunately attacked by another ferret that had gotten loose and we since gave the ferret away. Is there any cross species disease that could have been transmitted? May be it's not just Neuro trans since he was doing really well like 3 days later than crashed and hadn't really recovered to that level

The vet worried he will starve if kept at home and said it would be painful. They talked with someone at Penn and madec the reccomendation he likely will need to be put down. I think because of the severe lack of taking in nutrition. They said some times there is issues with the syringe feeding too.

I suggested leaving cookie they were worried she might lick his wounds or where the stiches were. He has a very soft spot in the head they are worried about.

We be able to give him a lot of attention but definely not 24 hour icu level due to a human baby on the way and work.

What's the smallest a male glider can eat and not be dying of starvation. I did see another one on this form with a special needs glider at a low weight that was at home. How do you tell if he is actually starving or just really underweight. I couldn't talk direct with the specialist but I get delaware region isn't a specialist for gliders.

We took him the other day to the vet. they were surprised at his recovery (actually thought we were taking him to be put down).
gizmo is still underweight I think but is seemingly doing stable. he is on antibiotics for some eye issue and prophylaxis for possible infections.

we continue to monitor him but are happy with his recovery he still circles and may for life. would like to get him in some rehab but i think he will make it fine now. thanks for everyone's comments and support.

Hi, glad the baby is doing so much better! It sounds very traumatic but with a happy ending! smile
