Hi, i have a glider that drools while active. i have been to the vet and we are still determining the cause. He is exactly 1 year old. hes had this issue since 12 weeks from what i remember. its possible it began a little later. I took him and my others for checkups as soon as i noticed and recieved a clean bill of health but later realized my vet was not as experienced as they claimed to be. i finally found a vet that i am confident in. Upon bloodwork we realized he has an infection (he hasnt been himself the past month), high liver enzymes, and high phosphorous (he hadnt been eating all food groups of his diet plan and used to eat every last drop). He is on an antibiotic and doing well. He feels great and 100% himself again. But the drooling hasnt changed any. It is only while active such as running in wheel, gliding, or even during car rides to the vet and at the vet which indicates he also drools while stressed. Has anyone encountered this? Weve done xrays which are good. And 2 rounds of bloodwork to compare. He was on antibiotic for 10 days and upon being off-he wasnt feeling as well again. So we started the antibiotic for a longer course. We have done bloodwork again to check liver and such. vet did not get enough blood and had it sent out to a lab so we are on the antibiotic and starting milk thistle until labs come back.

For the drooling he needs to be checked by a vet. They will need to gas him down so they can to a thorough check of his mouth and tongue. It may even call for x-rays. A bad tooth could be causing the drooling.

They did sedate him for bloodwork and in the process they checked body condition, eyes, ears, nose, throat, teeth/Oropharyngeal, Cardiovascular, respiratory, lymph nodes, abdomen/gi, urogenital, musculoskeletal, and integumentary. they did xrays twice to compare the two and didnt find anything. They said his teeth are good but i wonder if they checked all 40?

I think my vet is great and well educated but i do plan on getting another opinion about the cause of drooling just to have another set of eyes on it. Ive already had one other vet take a look at him. We think it could be due to diet issues or liver issues. i havent come across anyone else that has experienced this. It seems like it isnt common unless it is due to a tooth infection.

He has the infection now (low immune/wbc) but he has completely been himself and active since ive noticed it around 12 weeks (or possibly a little later). This past month he turned 1 years old and had been acting out of character and not feeling well. the antibiotic has brought him back to his active, happy, playful, self and the drooling hasnt changed so i dont believe its due to his infection unless it is in fact a tooth. But it is not constant. It is only when he is active or possibly stressed as well. they believe it is nausea but i am anxious to learn the cause. His entire throat gets completely soaked. Once it dries you can tell it then becomes stained. The vet examined him and confirmed that it is absolutely drool and saw it come from his mouth. No nasal discharge or anything else.

It really sounds like there is tooth involvement. They need to check every tooth to make sure that there are no loose teeth.

Yeah after everything ive read i am concerned about that too. I will get another opinion and have them check his teeth. but i just dont understand why it is only while he is active/stressed.

Is it possible that he is having seizures?

Does he stair off into space?

Twitch?

Eyes blink rapidly?

No he is perfectly fine otherwise. No seizures that i am aware of. Doesnt seem to do any of that. During tent time he would run around and play but i would cut it short when his chin/throat would get soaked. I was afraid he would overexert himself. he runs in his wheel normally just like any glider but his throat gets soaked after a short time. When we let him out to play-he jumps back and forth from myself to my boyfriend- his throat gets soaked. It always stops and dries once we put him back/he settles down. It happens during car rides to the vet recently.
he has always been so healthy from what i could tell aside from this. (perfectly white silky fur, healthy weight, hes always been one of my bigger muscular boys, always active/high energy)
Ive had him since sept 2017. Hes had this issue since about that time. I never noticed him chewing anything at all until a few months back when i bought him a new stealth wheel. Around that time, he chewed off the H bar from the track. I was worried he may have chipped a tooth or worried he could have ingested something so i took him to the vet and we had xrays/bloodwork/checked his teeth. They did not see anything. Recently he hasnt felt well and has not been himself. He would bite constantly and his demeanor was off. He no longer greeted me at the cage door or ate as much of his food. he stayed in pouch a lot. I knew something was wrong so we went back to the vet and had another xray/bloodwork to compare. It is possible he began to feel unwell after chewing the bar off the wheel. But he had the drooling issue long before that. It is also possible that he chewed the bar off the wheel -because- he did not feel well. (since he bites a lot when he doesnt feel well)
he has also recently developed a bit of staining along his patigium/sides. This is not something hes ever had before. I wonder if its due to the diet or infection. The fur seems odd to me but the vet and others i have showed pictures to all say it looks normal. One day, i found him sleeping in his wheel (abnormal for him) and he cried when i picked him up. A sound i have never heard any glider make before. It was upsetting.
there arent really any other symptoms. again, he is on the antibiotic and feeling well. He is def back to acting like himself. im just not certain this is the cure and may just be a bandaid. he was on the antibiotic for 10 days, did great, but once we stopped he seemed off again. We are back on the antibiotic for a longer course and he is feeling great again. vet just thinks he has an infection and high liver enzymes due to the specific diet he was on. She suggested mazuri pellets in addition to the diet and believes it will help temendously. we are waiting for results from his 3rd blood test.
is there a different xray they can do to check all 40 teeth? Im not sure how they can see all of them on an xray or physical exam.

Oh the only other symptom ive noticed is he sticks his tounge out a lot. As if he is thristy or like a human would lick their lips? For lack of a better explaination. Im pretty sure he only does this when he drools though so i guess its one in the same. Hes not dehydrated. It has to be nausea or an issue with his teeth. Id just like to find out why exactly and keep him as healthy as possible.

Maybe he bit his tongue at some point. Has the vet examined his tongue?

I think she did examine his tounge. Ill have to ask. His bloodwork came back fine except for his wbc is still low and the vet said he is still fighting an infection but that its not a suprise bc we know the medication is helping. He had mild polychromasia but im waiting for her to email me back to find out what that means. I think it either means he may have anemia or its just hemolysis from the blood draw. Ive done a lot of reading on all of it but i was getting tired. Here is something that ive found. I clean their trays each night and examine their stool just as i weigh them often to keep track of health. I have never seen this before. The stool has some sort of fiber in it. My pair is in one cage and my newest baby is in a seperate cage. Both have some sort of hair in the stool. I think its either a parasite or its cat hair. My cat does shed a lot and we have to brush him often. i wonder if they are ingesting his hair/dander. And i wonder how this would affect them. Ive read about rabbits getting gi stasis.

Polychromasia is an abnormally large amount of immature red blood cells.

As far as a diagnosis I don't know what that means.

After thinking it over and emailing my vet I think the hair in the stool is just their own fur. Ive just never noticed it before. I wondered if this would cause the drooling issue. The vet didn't imply that it was their own fur just that it did look like hair and not a parasite. I'm going to have fecals done again anyway. I am just worried about every little detail. Trying to figure out what's wrong entirely and how to help him the best I can.
