Glider’s fingernails pulled back/off #1417168

I was playing with my girl Zelda just now and noticed that she was licking/favoring her right front paw. When I got a closer look, I realized that two of her fingernails had pulled up and back from the quick (at least I think that’s what it is) to the point where they were barely hanging on her fingers at all. She seemed annoyed and kept licking her paw and avoiding putting pressure on it.

When one of her sisters (Maisie) came over to play with her, Zelda crabbed at Maisie to stay away. Maisie can’t really take a hint and can sometimes play rough so I moved Zelda to my spare cage. I put some fleece down so she wouldn’t have to walk on the bars and gave her softer toys to play with.

I don’t know what else to do tonight. I’m going to take her to the vet in the morning, but is there anything else I can do to make things more comfortable for Zelda? I’m a very anxious momma at times and I don’t want to do anything to cause her more pain. Any advice? Thank you guys so much for your help!

I'm sorry no one was on the board to help you when you posted early in the morning. So glad you are taking her to the vet this morning, and I suspect he/she will remove the nails in question.

Please let us know how Zelda is doing.

Since you didn't see Zelda get hurt, it is hard to know how it happened. Could have been that she and Maisie got into a tussle or she could have gotten caught in something in the cage.

Be sure to check your cage very carefully for anything that might have caused the injury, especially the wheel (if you have one).

Thank you for responding. I have a freedom wheel but I think it’s from one of my pouches. It’s very tall and I think she might have hurt herself climbing out of it. I’m about to take her to the vet now so I’ll keep you updated.

When you get back, take the pouch out and check it closely for loose thread or signs (blood) this is where she was injured.

If you are fairly certain this was the cause, then I would replace it.

Ugh so the vet told me my glider’s doctor won’t be in til tomorrow so I have to wait another day. I know it’s only a couple fingernails so she’ll be ok I just hate seeing her hurting. I took the pouch out and replaced it with a smaller one that has entry on the side rather than the top so there’s no climbing involved. Should I keep her in the spare cage until tomorrow?

I would just in case she and her sister are having issues. She may take those fingernails off herself if they are bothering her too much, so watch her as carefully as you can between now and tomorrow. There really isn't much more you can do unless the vet at the clinic today has glider experience, and you can talk them into letting you come in.

This happens, check your pouches but usually it is caused by their nails being too long and they get them caught on their fleece stuff.

Some grow back and some don't.

I do cut their nails every two weeks. They hate it, but I do it because I love them and want them to be safe. I just trimmed her nails a week ago, which is why I’m confused. The other option is that she did it herself. I have had issues with her overgrooming in the past but no behaviors like this or to this extent, and her hair had been growing in nicely over the past month or so. I’m just worried for her. I’ve been checking her every couple hours and she seems fine, no swelling or indication of infection, no more bleeding, just her trying not to put pressure on it. I’m keeping her cage and wheel extra clean too. I’ll update tomorrow after the vets visit.

It's great to hear her fur is comming back.

Check her pouches for where she might be digging in them too. Since my latest addition I have learned to keep a fleece pompom and a couple of blankies in the sleeping pouch. He likes to dig.

Please keep us updated on vet visit.

Thank you :-) I also have a digger/chewer and I usually have a couple fleece blankets in the pouches. I’ve also learned how to sew (no small task with my horrible coordination!) and will replace the lining of my gliders pouches every couple months. I frequently check for holes and frayed ends because my middle glider child Brie just HAS to chew through everything I get her. :-P

My appt is at 6:30p (I’m on the east coast) so I’ll try to update as soon as I get back.

Question...how do you get those cute little glider icons in your signature??

Okay, so I took her to the vet and he looked at her nails. He said one was broken and the other was essentially peeled back a bit. He trimmed her one nail and gave me something called Chlorohexiderm that I’m supposed to apply to both injured nails twice a day for five to seven days using a q-tip. He said to keep her separated from her sisters to keep them from trying to groom her paw until the redness has subsided, and to bring her back if I notice any further swelling or signs of infection.

Does this sound like good advice? Zelda didn’t seem to enjoy her time at the vet and tried her best to squirm away from him when he was applying the stuff to her nails, but overall she did a really good job and only nipped me once. I was very proud of her! :-)

I’ll let her rest for now but will check on her in an hour or so.

Yes, that is good. I would have done the same to my gliders and I am not a vet.

My vet keeps me well stocked because I am a rescue.
