Hi all! This is my first post here. We are new to the glider world. A friend of mine has a single male, I had never heard of them and my boyfriend and I instantly fell in love. We wanted to make sure we knew what we were getting ourselves into though, so we researched for a few months before getting our first glider, Zoey from a breeder. We kept her alone for about a month and once we knew we could handle it, we got another, Aspen, from a reputable exotic pet store that my friend got her male from. They’ve been receiving vet care and are on the BML diet, my dad built them a huge habitat by hand and they bonded together very well. They snuggled constantly, and Zoey is an escape artist. When she’d go out on adventures, Aspen would call to her until she came back. This morning we found Aspen dead of unknown causes. We had played with them both in the tent just last night and she showed no signs of illness or injury (eating, drinking, socializing normally etc.) She and Zoey were extremely close, always slept together and cuddled. Aspen was the golden child always very well behaved and people oriented. We are so heartbroken at losing her, but now I am concerned for Zoey. We are taking her to the vet tomorrow to ensure it wasn’t anything contagious that she could be suffering from too. Provided that she is healthy, I’d like to start looking for a cage mate from the breeder I got Zoey from. My question is whether a female or male would be better? What age do you think would be best? Zoey is 8 months old.

Hi and :welcome2: to Glider Central!

A male or female wouldn't matter, but if you decide to get a male, be sure he is neutered before introductions.

Similar age and size would be ideal.

Here is a guide for intros:

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthr...roduce-gliders-to-each-other#Post1407885

It would be wise to have 2 cages temporarily in case the intros don't go well.

Please keep us posted on the progress. And please ask any questions you may have.

Welcome to GliderCENTRAL!

I am sorry for your loss.

When you go to the vet, have them run a fecal and check for Giardia and also check for a UTI.

Dawn has given you great advise for introducing the two gliders once they are ready to be introduced. You can get a smaller cage that could double as a hospital/travel cage for the new glider until you can get introductions done.

I notice the article linked now only calls for 2 weeks of quarantine. I could have sworn the recommended quarantine period used to be 4 weeks or 30 days. Has it truly changed?

Which linked article, I didn't mention quarantine in my article.

Little Senior moment creeping up on you, Kim wink

Some people still do the 30 day quarantine especially if the glider/s are not coming from a reputable breeder. Others will do a short quarantine more to give all time to acclimate to their new surroundings while making sure there are no health issues. Still others do no quarantine at all, however, we do not recommend doing this.

Thanks. So it would be okay to move my 2 new gliders from TPG over into the same room with my other 2? I think they'd be happier in that room and I'd like all 4 gliders to start smelling and hearing each other. I kind of figured quarantine might not be a huge issue with gliders coming from a reputable breeder like TPG but was otherwise going to follow instructions. :D

Having them in the same room is fine. I wouldn't put the cages close for awhile.
