My 8-year-old male glider died earlier this week of intestinal intussusception. I have been experiencing overwhelming guilt over this and it has driven me to see who else has seen this with their sugar gliders.

My sugar glider had severe difficulty passing stool the days up to the incident and had a prolapsed rectum that I thought would go back on its own. He was running on his wheel and eating the night before I noticed a prolapsed intestine in the morning. I immediately took him to an exotic veterinarian and they performed surgery on him that included stitching up a part of the intestine that began to die and was leaking. They corrected the intussusception (and intestinal prolapse). He survived the surgery but died an hour later.

I am aware of what can cause intussusception in other animals. My male had a large tumor next to his cloaca that was removed 2 years prior. Unlike my other sugar gliders, he always seemed to occasionally strain when he was trying to pass stool throughout his life. On the other hand, I know I gave him probably a bit too much orange juice as a treat (unusual), which gave him diarrhea right before his demise.

The vet told me that they really don't know what caused it and that he was an old boy (though I really believe he had a few years left in him). I just keep kicking myself for giving him diarrhea and not doing something when I noticed the rectal prolapse.

I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this in their gliders.

Thank you.

I am very sorry for your loss.
I have never heard of an intestinal intussusception, I have heard of prolapsed cloacas. Prolapse of the cloaca is usually caused by anal gland impaction.

So sorry for your loss. I I haven't dealt with anything like this yet. Thank you for posting, even though it must have been difficult.

May you find comfort in your memories with him.

I am so very sorry for your loss and hope your little one did not suffer.

From your description it sounds like your little one did indeed have some sort of impaction because you said he did have a trouble passing his stool close to the time of his death.

You did exactly the right thing by taking him to the vet but it is very possible he was having a problem for many days before you even knew about it. As we know gliders hide many problems until it is too late for vet intervention. That is possibly what happened.

Know that you did everything possible for your little guy hug2
