Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this topic. Not quite sure where to put it!

I have wanted sugar gliders for a long time and am looking forward to the time I can finally get them. (I'm currently living abroad, so it's not a good time to get any right now.) But there was one thing that had been worrying me recently.

I have a hedgehog, who I love so much. When he passes away, I plan to get another one and keep having them my whole life. However, I also want sugar gliders one day. Two little nocturnal exotics! It sounds pretty cute.

Now obviously I wouldn't put them in the same cage. In the same room, yes, but never together, because of the risk of cross contamination or spike injury. I might hold the hedgie up to the bars so he can look at the gliders, but that's about it. However, I've recently heard some bad things about gliders. Gliders getting out of their cages at night and killing/eating pet birds! (Quarantine had left me with nothing to do but research potential pets, even ones I'll probably never have, haha. I love all animals!) I know they can eat small birds, though I can barely believe it.

Do you think shuggies and a hedgie sharing a room is a bad idea? I doubt a hedgehog could do much (intentional) damage to a glider. All mine likes to do is lumber around and eat cat food. There's basically a zero percent chance he could escape. So I am more worried about the gliders. Of course, I would always lock the door to the glider's cage, but... If they did get out, somehow, do you think they would go after a hedgehog? Should they be in different rooms?

I never imagined they could hurt each other as long as they were housed separately. I actually thought the biggest threat would be a shuggie trying to groom a spikey hog and accidently getting poked! But hearing about accidently losing other pets to them has made me worried! I would never forgive myself if something like that happened.

Maybe I'm worrying WAY too much, though. I don't think they psycho little bloodthirsty monsters! Just want what's safe for both of my Pocket Pets.
(Though RIP my bird dreams... upset)

I'm not completely sure of the answer, however, there is someone who used to be a moderator here who owns both. I will ask her and get back to this thread.

I would think if you practice good safety precautions with both, there should be no problems.

BTW, does your ever have free reign of the room it is in? (without supervision)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Again, I wouldn't think there would be a problem, but I don't want anything to happen. If anyone else has experience with shuggies sharing a room with other small animals (mice, rats, hamsters, etc), I would love to hear it!

The hedgehog is always supervised if he's out of his cage. Though, honestly, if I just put him on the ground and left the room, I think he'd just crawl under the bed and go back to sleep! grin They're lazy little things. Mostly he just likes to nap, eat meal worms, hiss, and--sometimes!--run on his wheel, but only if he thinks no one is watching. Most of our time spend together is holding him in his pouch. It would be nice if the gliders and I could have some tent time while he naps in his bag in my lap, but I wouldn't do anything that has a chance to hurt one of them.
