I have a 10y female Smores who lost her cagemate in Sept. I am trying to induce her to a lone 7y female Buttercup. I think it's time they can be housed together but I'd like some experienced owners opinions. Here's some info...

Smores is small. She's had health issues (nothing contagious) for a bit and and has lost weight, upon just being geriatric She is quite a bit small and has slowed and calmed the last year or so. Cup is more spunky, fit and crabby.

Both of the cages have always been only 2" apart for 6ish years. So they have smelled, watched and been friendly neighbors this entire time.

pouches have been swapped several times. They each choose to sleep in the swapped pouch even though they have several other pouches/areas that doesn't have the new smell.

I have had them out together and gave them treats. Each time they both ate fine and Cup sits very still as Smores sniffs, circles and crawls on her. I have had them either sharing the same area in my shirt or with a fabric layer between and it goes good. They have slept for hours together. Cup is a sound sleeper and usually is not up during the day. Smores is the opposite. I have also had them sleep in one of their pouches with me for hours and that goes well too.

Is it time to let them share a cage? Due to size, strength, health, age, etc I have worried about having them be together. Is it time for me to "let go" and proceed to cleaning a cage and put them together?

I think they could be housed together. Once you clean the cage put two sleeping pouches in there, in case they want to sleep apart and divided up their dinner into 2 dishes and put them as far apart as possible.

Good Luck,

I agree with Feather. Just make sure the pouches are clean as well.

Thank you for the back up. As of yet I haven't been able to get one of the cages sanitized to move them into. I've had some health problems from covid to now having influenza A and i just simply don't have the strength. They've had a few days apart due to me being hospitalized and I was worried it would be a setback. Today however after eating a couple yogis they went together into a new pouch and have been sleeping good since.

My questions are...
Should I just keep them separate at night and continue placing them together during the day until I feel well and can do a complete cleaning?
Would cage swapping a few times them put them into one be OK and clean/refresh later?
Any other suggestions out there?

They will be fine as long as they are near each other. But when you can, iwould clean one of the cages as best you can and put them together in the morning. Or at least when they can spend time sleeping together. I would also make 2 separate food dishes and place in the cage before they wake up. That way they can choose where and how to eat.

Cleaning cage:
Depending on the size of the cage, you can set it on a beach towel, and quickly wipe down with dawn dish soap and hot water. I use 2 car wash mitt from dollar tree like this:
https://www.dollartree.com/drivers-choice-microfiber-chenille-washmitts/196478

I also buy a brand new toilet brush to reach and get hard stuff off.

Leave soap to soak for 10 mins, rinse off using hot water on wash mitts rinsing often. I then towel dry.

Listen and watch during the day as well as when they wake up and eat/play.

They may choose to spend time in the pouch getting to know each other. It is best to offer several sleeping options as well. They will mark and nap throughout the night.

I like to put my scent on blankies in with them as well.

I hope you start feeling better soon. mlove
