Some of you know my gliders Munchichi and Peppy just had a joey come oop. I named her Flower. Well one of her back feet is deformed. She has no feeling in it. She uses her leg but she can't move her foot at all. I took her to the vet to be sure it was a birth defect and not something that just happened and he confermed that it was a birth defect.

I'm just wondering if you could give me some pointers on how to prepare the cage or if there is some advice you can give me on taking care of my little Flower.

I say let her lead you. You will have to keep a closer eye on that foot, as she has no feeling in it. If she chews it or bites or damages it, she won't know. You will have to watch it to prevent infection, or bleeding, etc... But let her guide you as to what she can do. You'll be pleasantly suprised, I think. Congrats on the new baby

you might want to give her a cage that is not too high if she is having problems climbing... lots of fleece hammocks and such for her....
Are you going to have dad fixed? if they are having babies with birth defects it might best to retire them so they don't have more joeys that could carry the gene?
good luck with your flower.

There is a thread on amputee gliders where I asked alot of the same questions. You might want to go there and see some of the suggestions for setting up a cage for an amputee glider. I know in the cage where I've got Miss Carina Trey, I've got more ramps and hammocks (she doesn't really use them and gets around fine) but that might be something that you'll want to use in your cage. Also as Shawna said, keep a close eye on her foot/leg to make sure that she doesn't injure it.

Thank you for the input! I have to massage her foot 3 times a day so I do keep a close eye on it. She gets around great so far so I'm sure she will surprise me. Poor Peppy has to get neutered after all. Thanks again for all the info. I'm sure I'll have more questions as Flower grows.

I have a glider with two deformed back feet, and no toes on one front hand. The main issue is with falling when the foot fails to support the glider's weight. I keep hammocks rigged at intervals in the cage (about every 8 inches) with a square one just above wheel level at the bottom-they can move around the edges but he won't fall thru the 3/4 inch gap at the edges, so there is something to catch him when he falls. The first night it took us a few hours to figure out what kept crashing in his cage (he's a rescue, and it was him). The point is to limit the distance of a fall to avoid injury.

Flowers foot looks normal but its flipped all the way back. I guess its like if you could push your hand back to touch your knuckes to your arm. She uses her leg like she wants to grab on to something but her foot just doesn't move. I took a picture last night but my camera isnt the best but I'll post it when I get home.

I'm going to start making her some hammocks now so I can do the same thing with her cage as you did with Chrono's. By the way he is very cute!
