I have an expectant mother glider and I know she has trichamonads. I saw them under a microscope (i am vet tech)... she has loose stools too, not liquid but soft. She is eating "okay" for a new glider I guess its fine, but for a pregnant one is dosent seem like enough. But i dont know what diet she was on previously, she might not know the new foods she has been given, she chows down on bugs though. She is probably only a few days, a week tops, with babies in her pouch. She was most certianly NOT pregnant 7 days ago (I have had her 10 days). Sigh, has anyone ever used metronitozol(flagyl) on a pregnant/nursing glider with out side effects to they young? I am afraid not to treat her, with the added stress of joeys the parasites could really compromise her health. Right now she is acting lively and running on her wheel, jumping around. Advice?

I have treated a mom who was nursing a joey with flagyl. However, the joey was a few weeks oop. The mom, dad, and joey were all treated with flagyl for giardia and I did not have any ill effects from the meds on parents or the joey.

Even if there is a slight risk to the baby, I personally feel that you need to get mom well. The trich can be deadly. I think it would be best to treat the mom, because if you do not treat for fear of harming the baby, the mom and baby may not make it.

I would also contact PeeperKeeper here on GC. She recently went through trichamonas (sp) with one of her gliders.

Good luck and hoping all turns out well for mom and baby. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

Yeah I had pretty much decided that treating her was the only way to go, I guess I just wanted to know if anyone knew of side effects to the joey.. just trying to prepare myself for the worst. I know its hard on the kidneys... I guess ill just give her lots of fluids to keep the toxins out. If other joeys were nursing and did okay, i have more hope these little ones will do okay.

[:"green"]While it is true that treating with Flagyl does put the joeys at risk, the greater risk is in not treating the mother - which could jeopardize her as well as the joeys. In my opinion, you should go ahead and treat her.
A couple of years ago, I had a glider (with a joey about 2 days in pouch) that came down with a yeast infection - we went ahead and treated her but she did lose the joey. Whether the joey died because of the treatment or the infection is anybody's guess, but the mother did survive, so it was worth it!

Can you direct these questions for the vet you work for? He/she would be able to tell you exactly what and how to treat her. I hope she gets better soon!

I agree with treating. Mom can have another joey, but not if she doesn't survive. One thing you could maybe ask the vet is if possibly a slightly lower dose for a little longer might not shock her system as much. Since she's so new (to you), and with a joey IP, and sick, I'd recommend treats thru the cage bars, and handle her only for meds (or if absolutely necessary) for now to minimize any additional stress.

Keep in mind, also, that Flagyl (or metronidazole) can make loose stools worse for a while. Watch for that, and offer a few flakes of oatmeal daily (regular quaker oats, not quick cooking) to help absorb the excess water in the intestines so she doesn't dehydrate if the stools get runny. Be careful, tho-no more than 5-6 individual flakes in a day, as too much can work the other way and block things. All you want to do is minimize the fluid loss.

Keep us updated.

And-keep lots of fluids available to her so she has a choice and is more likely to keep drinking: water, gliderade, nectar, juice, whatever she likes.

Just saw this post, but I agree with everyone else that you need to treat. My girls got VERY sick (vomiting and diarrhea) from the trichs. They (or at least Peepers) also got a secondary infection with klebsiella bacteria. With joeys in pouch, it seems very likely that your little momma would get sick too.

I didn't realize metro is hard on the kidneys. I thought I had heard that it's not too bad, but maybe since I was mostly concerned about the liver all I heard was that it was okay for liver. I gave Peepers metro and Baytril twice a day for 3 solid weeks. She seems completely fine now and has been off her meds for about 2 (or is it 3?) weeks.
