Do you have to stick to certin fruits & veggies with BML, or can you feed what fruits & veggies you want. Are there any fruits or veggies that are a BIG no no when feeding BML.

Yes, certain fruits and veggies are meant to be served with the BML plan. They are:
Veggies: Carrots, Peas, Corn & Green Beans.
Fruits: Apples, Grapes, Watermellon, Cantalope, Melon, Frozen Pitted Cherries & Blueberries
The whole plan is formulated to work with those fruits & veggies, if you use anything else it can throw off the ratios.

There are five fruits to alternate: blueberries, canteloupe, watermelon, grapes, and pitted cherries. You can serve blueberries & grapes one night, then offer canteloupe & blueberries, cherries & watermelon, switch it all around.
The veggies (FROZEN & OFFERED EVERY NIGHT): green beans, peas, corn & carrots. Bourbon calls this the "staple" besides the BML. The quantities are by rule of thumb: 1 grape/blueberry/cherry per suggie, or a teaspoon of melon per suggie. Veggies is a tablespoon per suggie, and so is BML. If this is TOO MUCH, then back off a little every night til you get EMPTY DISHES every night.
There will be some things that suggies like more than others, and some nites when "they liked it last time it was served" & it gets barely touched other times. Don't get rattled....they vary in their tastes just like us!

Ok now Im confused... I have read and read the BML recipe off the links site and cant see anywhere. Where it says just certain fruits and veggies. all I see is this..The fruits and veggies can be of what ever variety you wish, there are times when gliders may like one thing one day and not the next, and vice versa, so don't think they don't like something just because they didn't eat it, the one time you offered it. The things to avoid with the fruits are pits, Do NOT feed the pits or seeds of apples, cherry, peaches etc.. You can use fresh or frozen, but do NOT used canned. Am I not on the right recipe? Im not doubting anyone. Just confused now.

I'm sorry for your confusion, Kansas! There are a few "pages" that need to be updated...obviously this is one of them.
Bourbon has been modifying the actual mixing order for the BML recipe these past few months, and I don't think it's on the website yet. This is what SHE'S telling us to limit the fruit list to: just these five fruits with the 4 veg's and BML will meet the nutritional needs of a suggie.

Thanks for the help everyone. If any ones knows of any more links I can read about feeding BML that would be great. So what about treats? Maybe only once a week will that throw off there ratios.

Sticking to just those fruits and veggies is going to be much easier. Those are the only veggies I use, but I have been getting different types of fruit. After I run out of my pineapple, strawberry, and mango I'll get just those mentioned...much easier!

You can feed mealies each night; those are definite treats in my gliders' books. If they don't seem to be eating the BML, wait to feed the mealies in the morning. You can offer the fruits and veggies (as well as the BML) as treats during the day and just reduce the portion that night of what you fed. Mine love to be hand fed the BML as I'm dishing it out in the afternoon. And if I'm eating an apple, they all poke their heads out for a snack.

Don't forget fresh papaya and figs, both of which have excellent calcium-phosphorus ratios.

Mikey on the Back to Basics BML, papaya and figs are not listed; in fact, due to the calcium content that they were not listed....

The pre-frozen veggies are fine...you'll need to experiment with your babies to see if they like them thawed out before you serve them up or if they'll eat them still chilled.

Here in the states (I think you mentioned before you were from Malaysia?) we are able to get the frozen ones fine. Cooking them kind of drains them of their nutrients. I find it odd that one can't feed raw veggies, or why you'd need that disclaimer... If that were the case with the prepacked ones, though, I'd just buy them fresh, cut them up and freeze them myself. I already do that with my fruits, so it wouldn't be much more to do that with veggies.

Hope I got it right-veggies-peas,corn,green beans & carrots. Fruit-Apples, Grapes, Watermellon, Cantalope, Melon, Frozen Pitted Cherries & Blueberries. These are the only fruits and veggies they get nothing else. What about figs, kikw, ect..I am feeding the BML just the way it tell you to. Can they have raw penuts as a treat.

Woah! I leave the forum for a few months and suddenly there's a ban on papaya and figs for their calcium content?
How and when was this established?
I smell a new thread.
Sorry for suggesting papaya and figs, GC, if it goes against some new rule I didn't know about.

Mikey, Bourbon is going back to the basics that she started out with. Seems too many things were being added to the BML that were throwing the CA:P ratios off. I think she is still working on it and hasn't been changed on the link yet.
Sure is good seeing you back. I have missed your informative post. Don't stay away so long again!!!!

Suggieboys, There was a thread sometime ago about "Bait Shop Crickets" and aflatoxin poisoning. The quote below about peanuts was in that thread and explains why peanuts are a no-no.

Quote:

Yes gliders can get aflatoxins from peanuts. The ones we lost to aflatoxins were from eating human grade peanuts from a major super market. We only used the peanuts for treats in the morning. Maybe one or a half peanut per glider but that was all it took.
Ellen lost gliders from aflatoxin contamination they got from eating crickets. I purchase feed for my goats, chickens, and birds and have noticed on several ocassions that there would be mold on the seed and grain. Not sure what the statistics are on the dangers of getting peanuts or grain that has aflatoxin but why gamble on your gliders life? The danger of aflatoxin usually is present in corn, grains, and peanuts that have been stored in silos. Any time grains are stored in a place where moisture can collect and mold can form there is a danger of aflatoxin. I don't think there is much to worry about with fresh produce and fresh corn. Correct me if I am wrong. Charlie H

As to a book being published about feeding gliders - it would probably be like information about computers. It would be outdated before it hit the bookshelves.

You know I think SRLB (Peggy) has a book being published on glider care, and I'm not sure at what stage in production it is, if it's that far yet, but she should let us know, hopefully real soon!! Peanuts are listed as a carrier of the aflotoxins. Not to stray too far off the fruits and veggies question, but here's another good thread, was there any consensus on aflatoxins?, with more great links within it (including this one, Aflatoxins in Food). It is quite serious and can be lethal, so we definitely want to be cautious about it.
