*SIGH*

Shortly after I got my first glider, Nico, my neice in Las Vegas got one of her own. Ben, she called him, and took him everywhere. Although I preached constantly about the need to study, ask questions and join the Board, let alone to feed an approved diet, she persisted in ignoring my warnings and continued to feed what the pet store told her was good.

Shortly after, her younger sister got a baby glider, who unfortunatly died after only a month. Poor diet, I can only assume, as she also persisted in listening to her older sister in these matters.

One should never assume they know enough, or cease to acquire more data, on any given subject....

Ben passed away after only a year, crossing the Bridge a few weeks ago with no signs of physical trauma, at only 14 months old. diet or illness, I can only correlate my own luck with my 7 babies with reading the Glider Central Board, gleening information and knowledge from all the posts here about their care and warning signs of danger; making positive use of the negative experiences of others, learning new ways to make them happy and loving every day with my little buddies. This data source, and in recognition of all that everyone here does to help others, is in part why I spend $$$ and time to build & donate cages every year to help fund charities. My small way of helping pay for the FREE information made so readily available to evryone.

Thank you, GC.

That is so sad1 I have a hard time when people ask me about gliders and their care. Most will ask "are the eay to care for?" and my first thought is yup. But in truth it is only easy becuse I have read, reread and still read and pay attention to what I have read and learn how to filter it. I wish some people would learn to heed the advice of others but then people still feed ferrets cat food....

Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

Sad. I was sharing my glider with someone and she started talking about getting one for a 13 year old... and a big red flag went up. I was worried because she was so in love with her appearance and mannerisms that she wanted one.

But their appearance won't feed them and take care of them. Just a few minutes ago I was kicking myself because I was at the grocery store and had forgotten to bring the list of fruits I wanted to try with my glider. You truly have to think about these guys all the time... Not quite the hamster type pet at all.

Perhaps if she is going to get another she will listen to you.

People take the luxuries for granted. All of the people on here dedicate time out of their busy lives to get on here and give really good advice because they love gliders so much that they want owners to have somewhere to go if they ever need help. That is love.

I have been lucky enough to be blessed with a sister who always listens to me when it comes to animals. She has even sent me camera phone photos of products to ask me if they're any good.

I also have a hard time with people who buy without doing any research at all. While taking my glider to the vets or talking with people about gliders, I've heard them say things like, "Oh yeah, we had one of those. It was wild and wouldn't let us hold it. We gave it away. Is yours wild?" and other things that just show completely that the person has no idea what gliders are like or what is involved in their care...it breaks my heart :-/

Sadly, working for different animal shelters has shown me that there are a lot of animal owners who know nothing about how to care for their pets...whether that is a dog, cat, reptile, or a glider. I think sometimes it can be worse with exotics though because gliders definitely have some needs that things like dogs or hamsters do not.

I try to do my best to educate everyone I meet...whenever people ask about my gliders, I always caution them and tell them how much work they are and how involved their care is, hehe, even though I don't find it difficult and I enjoy them, for a lot of people they are not the right pets.

This board is where I did 90% of my research and I am very grateful it is here to educate me and to help educate others.

I always tell people who are interested in my gliders that they're really not the right pet for most people, because they're not. You have to be able to deal with being constantly peed on, being awakened in the middle of the night by someone barking for whatever reason, you have to be willing to prepare their food every night, you have to be able to deal with the occasional bite... etc.

They're wonderful and I wouldn't trade mine for anything, but it really is like having small children.

Before I got my glider, my friends would ask me -- ooh, do you think I should get one too? And I was like, "Yeah! You should!" But now that I've got one -- I'm more cautious with my reply and I try to tell them that it's not easy -- because they have special dietary needs and they're really like children. I love mine very much and worry about him all the time. There's not an hour that passes by that I don't have him on my mind. And do research, research, research is the first thing I'll say from now on to people who are interested in caring for one.

I am so sorry for the loss of Ben, he was just a baby. Its very true that education is so important. When I got my first glider I didn't know anything, I went to the library and they had one book in the childrens section with one line on sugar gliders. I found one book at Barnes and Noble and than thankfully I found GC. I shudder to think what might have happened to my little Sydney if I hadn't found this wonderful board full of people who help other people care and learn about thier babies. Thankfully, Sydney is still thriving, and lives with her family and is very loved. All we can do is to try our best to help people know the proper ways to care for their sugar gliders, sometimes they just don't listen and there is not much we can do.
Shaun, thank you for all you do to help the gliders!

Great post, Shaun!

Once I took in a neglected female glider from a teenager who thought of only herself and was very much into parties rather than stay home and take care of this little sweetheart. I had her for about a year before she died and I had no idea what she died of, because I had no history of what she was fed.

There is just not enough emphasis on the importance to keep yourself well-educated and well-prepared when it comes to being owned by gliders. Gliders are not an easy animal to take care of nor are they cheap.

I also feel so very strongly for the gliders who are being passed from one home to the next. I have taken in 16+ unwanted gliders (some are rescues) over the 5 years' time since I picked up my first one, Pixie. All of the gliders that I took in stayed/stay with me to this day. Once they come to our home, they stay with us for good.

I actually left my own birthday party early this past weekend because my babies needed their dinner! I guess that means I've officially got 'glideritis'!
