I am just now able to write this but figured it would be necessary so maybe everyone else could learn by the death of my sweet Ashleigh. I was having problems with my gliders not wanting to eat there BML and only wanted to eat the fruit smoothies and veggie relish I feed them. I had a set of Buttercream gliders that were a little, well, "fluffy" and they werent eating well either. I decided after reading other posts of picky gliders and getting them to eat that I would pull their fruit smoothies and just give them the mixed veggies plain and their BML frosted with applesauce. Well, My Ashleigh and Furby decided not to eat BML at all. I checked on them every night and didnt notice how quickly Ashleigh went down hill. Two days into this I found her in her box, lethargic, dehydrated, and very thin. Just in a matter of two days she had lost over half her body weight. I rushed her into the kitchen where I proceded to call her "grandma Anita" and find out what to do. I gave her pedialyte and gatorade. I fed her chicken baby food and she ate a hole peeled grape. She wound up taking a little over 3cc of fluids and started purking up. Her ears stood back up and her started getting sassy again. About 1 hour later while I had her held to my chest keeping her warm she had what I believe to be a small seizure and started labored breathing. She grabbed my hand with her little hand and wouldnt let me wrap her in the blanket she wanted in my hand. She took several deep breaths and passed away right in my hands. The next morning I discussed the happenings of the night with a vet I work with which told me that it sounded like she probably had hypogylcemia and was probably a complication of the overweight. and me pulling the sweets away from her caused her to go into a state of "sugar shock " or basically a hypoglycemic coma and die. I know that I did what I though was right by trying to get her to eat the BML which was where her protein and vitamins came from. But now I know to be very careful when you attemp to do these types of things. Please, all you lovers of our "fluffy" babies heed the warning and be careful. This kind of thing breaks your heart and I fear will take a long time to get over the feeling that I killed my sweet babie Ashleigh over ignorance and stupidity. We miss you Ashleigh and some day we will see you again.Furby misses you terribly.

I am so sorry for the pain you going through. With your glider having lost half her body weight in two days... the weight loss would be contributed to severe dehydration. So... to loose that much in body fluids your little one was very ill. Often when gliders suddenly go off their BML or other form of Protein in their diet and only eat their veggies or possibly some fruit... they due so from being ill which is usually brought on by a bacterial illness in their GI tract. Also... when a glider is severely dehyrated as you discribed above... it is best for the animal to be seen by a vet for fluids by sub-q'ing Lactated Ringers. The sick animal's digestive tract usually is not functioning effeciently at that point in time. Electrolyte inbalances from severe dehydration are all secondary problems brought about by the primary cause of illness. Perhaps the male needs to have a wellness check to be sure he is ok. It would be a shame to loose him too. Take care.

Sorry to hear about your loss. You were trying to do the right thing. I have seen advice on this board about removing fruits and vegetables to try to get gliders to eat their BML. I think this is very sound advice and most of the time WILL get gliders to eat their BML better, but I guess we should add the caveat that we should do all diet adjustments very slowly so that our suggies have time to adjust. You are a wonderful mom for trying to improve their diet, and again you have our condolences for your loss

thank you so much for all your responses, you have no idea how much it helps to have people to talk to. Yes, the male,Furby, did get checked out and he is fine. He is, however, suffering from hypoglycemia just like she was so I am going to have to be very careful about his diet and exercise.Thank you all again for prayers. I do feel all the hugs. It warms my heart. Now Furby and I both can start the healing process.
