Well, correct or not, her cough/sneeze is getting worse as well-so possibly the meds aren't the proper ones. This started with the nose color and sneezing, but it was a day later until the swelling started. Plus, her first bleeding episode was BEFORE the swelling-I'm inclined to think it's the other way around, and something got in, but I could be wrong, and we'll see what the vet thinks. I've been through this with Riker more times than I can count now-and this is NOT the outcome on day 3 of medication I want to be seeing. His swelling was much more gradual, and in place to some extent before the other symptoms. I appreciate the thoughts-11 hours to appt (and I will be getting there early!) worried

I dont know enough about suggie anatomy, but if the coughing gets worse as the swelling gets worse is it possible the swelling is compromising her airway or at least pressing on something and stimulating her to cough?

Just a possibility. I find illnesses less frightening if I can make sense of what is happening. Unknown things running amok scare me. alot. It is a hard thing with suggies, not knowing what is really going on in their little bodies. There are so many unanswered questions about them. My heart goes out to you.

Hope the vet had good news for you....

Keeping you and your baby in my thoughts all day!

Maybe the coughing is a result of the drainage - kinda like humans if your sinuses are draining in the back of your throat it makes you cough.......

hug2 Let us know how things are going.

Got back from the vet a short time ago-we'll pick up Lyah and Myst this afternoon (Myst is just there with her for "moral support".)

First, Lyah has lost 13 grams since her last weigh in...down from 190 to 177...not sure if it's all the infection, since she's also decided in the last month that she likes the wheel, and while she can't run, she does do this little thing between a fast walk, and more recently, almost a jog, of sorts.

Anyway, the vet thinks, from the bleeding when she eats, swelling, and other stuff, we may be looking at a "tooth root abscess"...she's going to put her under and do whatever is needed to take care of this. Standing order with my vets is to do what is needed, and I don't even want to think about how much the bill is going to come to, lol. I don't know if they'll have to remove any teeth, but if they do, they do. Anyway, I'll know more when we go get her, and update. It may be this evening before I can get online, since I have to be at work at 4, but I will as soon as I can.

vet also knows about her tendency to seizure, and is watching out for her. So I just hope all goes well. At least she'll be back with Myst when done, so she won't be all alone, and I hope that helps her.

Update 2:25 PM...they have her under anesthesia and are working on her now. I'll update as soon as I know.

She's 52 miles away from me-one of my babies-and I'm so worried about her...whether she'll come out of it and if she'll be okay. She is such a big girl, and stresses SO easy (I put a curse that the fleas of a thousand camels invade the armpits of her and Myst's former owner!!)I am so worried right now. cry

You give her lots of air kisses (wouldn't want to give her real ones, we all know she hates people koodies). Let us know the details once you get her home & stable!

Sorry this took so long-work has been busy.

Okay. The vet put Lyah under, and found a loose upper tooth. Nothing was OBVIOUSLY wrong in the mouth (but you have the swollen cheek pics earlier post). She pulled the tooth (which I have, and will post a picture of later tonight or tomorrow) and a LOT of pus drained out of Lyah's jaw. No stitches so it keeps draining, and we're to keep her on the Clindamycin (we stopped the meds whe she bled, so when we took her the vet could try for a culture), and will give her a painkiller (I have Torb (torbuterol) and Valium (dimazepam)), until the culture results come back at the end of the week, to make sure we have her on the right meds. We'll change if necessary when the culture (C&S) results come back.

For any new owners...this just cost over $400.00-and that's a DEAL for what the vet did. I was expecting between $500 & $600 (that's STILL going to hurt, money wise). This included THREE bottles of antibiotics...Clindamycin, Metronidazole (or Flagyl), and Baytril (enrofloxacin). Some of those are for the maintenance meds on Riker, Chronos, and Binx, but can be used with her as well, unless the culture dictates we use another med. If it does, we'll get it. Also, my vet is over a 100 mile round trip-all three of them are, in fact-and all three know my gliders. They are taken in for well-checks as well as illness.

So, so far Lyah isn't doing too bad...she came out of the anesthetic, and I got to visit with her and give her kisses on her way home (I'm at work, but hubby picked her up, then stopped here to pick up our Autistic son). She didn't seizure-which is WONDERFUL!!! grin

I will update, and post pics....both of her face as it heals, and the tooth that was removed. I'm SO happy she's still with us!! jump

I did want to add: the vet said the tooth was TINY, despite being a 4 root tooth. One of the roots was rotted mostly away. frown

LOL...sure, but no crunchy foods until the vet says it's okay!

I'm gonna need to talk to Chris (Glidrz5)-she's the only other one I know who's had a glider w/ pulled teeth! shakehead

Oh, and I meant to add: the vet said this is the first one she's called RIGHT ON target with a glider in awhile (goes to show how well they hide things, and how they can surprise us!). It WAS an abscessed tooth. I trust this vet more than any other, which is why I waited until this AM to take her. The one avail. last night would have given me meds, and sent us home. That would NOT have fixed the problem. Nothing against the vet-some are good for some things, others for others, just like human docs. It PAYS to KNOW YOUR vet. I've also been up now for all but 3 1/2 of the last 48 hours (and that sleep was in two parts)....wiped out is putting it mildly.

Jen, the sneezing thing is what first clued us into Sassy's tooth problems. He started sneezing & it wouldn't stop even after being on meds. His mouth never swelled up like Lyahs tho, so I guess I was lucky there.

One thing, after his surgery to remove several teeth (both upper & lower) Sassy didn't want to eat anything & I had a very difficult time with his meds and the oral antibiotics didn't seem to be helping him that much. Anyway it was necessary for me to take him into the vets office daily for sub-q fluids & an antibiotic injection. I didn't have to do this at other times or with Nicky after he had his front teeth pulled so maybe it was just that I was new at giving meds then & Sass wasn't getting his full dose because of that.

Hopefully you won't have this problem with Lyah, but be aware that she may need to have an injected antibiotic rather than an oral one. Also did your vet give you an oral rinse for her? We started one with Nicky & it did seem to help with him after having his front teeth pulled.

Jen, I'm so happy you got a correct diagnosis and treatment for Lyah. Maybe after this ordeal, she'll be enough used to being handled that she won't seize anymore (we can always hope!).

Chris, I'm so glad we have your experience with the glider tooth problems to guide us. I say "we" meaning GC in general. You are a great source of experience and information! thumb

Chris, we still have the oral rinse from Gimli (it's not contaminated, we separated what we were using into a different bottle from the main supply)-I didn't get to go pick her up, had to be at work, so hubby forgot some things (tho THANK GOODNESS he remembered to ask for the tooth! I'm still having trouble imagining what a four rooted suggie molar looks like! - having had 6 of mine pulled myself--oops, make that seven).

I'll call the vet in the morning and see if she wants us to use it. Thank you for the reminder!

Lyah has been having difficulty eating for a couple days-it was almost painful to watch. Hopefully she has an easier time now!

OH-also, her nose was MUCH pinker, and not the deep red like in the earlier photos!!! (KNEW I was forgetting something!) laugh

I don't even know how they could tell the tooth was a 4 root tooth.......when Sassy was losing his they were the size of the lead in a mechanical pencil.....very very tiny.

Honestly? I think she cheated and used a microscope! I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow and plenty of natural light, adjust my camera settings, and see how to take a pic, 'cause there's NO way I can do this at night! My Goodness what a tiny thing! I can tell that it is a multi-root tooth, but can't see it in definition (this is what happens when you get old-and your eyes get old with you! shakehead )I do have 2 pics of her face, tho, appx 8 hours post surgery-as before, front and top views.

I can't wait to see a pic of the tooth. As small as you describe it - I can't imagine how they manage to inflict such pain with it - hahahahahahahaha

Very happy for you that your baby came through this so well - whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Jen she's looking good. There is still some swelling but it's way down from what it was. I bet that her sneezing/coughing will stop in a day or so now also since the antibiotics won't have to continually fight against the drainage from the tooth and can focus on healing it.

Poor little Lyah! I had a tooth abcess once...dentist had to pull it because of the extreme amount of build up (infection). I looked like someone had beat me up terribly(face swollen and black and blue) and it was so painful.

Just watch her closely because the infection in the abcess (atleast in humans) is extremely toxic. (note to humans, do not have a tooth pulled if abcessed until you have been on antibiotics atleast 3-5 days if posible!) Since Lyah was on antibiotics prior to the tooth extraction, it should be just fine.

Hugs and prayers to you and Lyah.

I'm sorry I didn't update yesterday-too much going on. I'll get new pics up later today or this evening.

First: the tooth. I cannot get a good shot of it that isn't blurry. So.....we're going to attempt to take a pic THROUGH a magnifying glass, and see if that will work. Even with my bad eyesight, I can see the roots-it's tiny, less than a half millimeter, but I can actually see that it has roots on it. So by tomorrow night, I'll post the best pic I can get.

Second-we had to come up with a way NOT to hold her head, and still give meds. I didn't hold her cheeks, rather just the back of her head, and even that set her mouth to bleeding! cry It came out and was under her chin and down her chest! I'll try and get pics tomorrow of what we came up with-it may help someone. The last thing you want is for it to bleed-a dry socket is horribly painful if the blood clot comes loose.

For now, we have her on the clindamycin, and torb for pain. She still sounds awful when she sneezes to groom (but ISN'T sneezing as much jump )-it's extremely wet sounding, almost like she's trying to bark or chirp through her nose briefly. frown Every time she does it, I have to go check on her-that's almost as bad as the SM sound Riker made! I'm sleeping in the living room--and just like a mom, get up when she makes that noise!

And Chris, we start the oral rinse later today. thumb

Her face isn't any more swollen, though I think it'll take a while for it to disappear. I have a pic from yesterday, and will take one later, and post both at the same time. It may even have gone down a tiny bit, but it's hard to tell yet. She is also on a soft food/non chew diet (and so is Myst!) until further notice. I did get a very ripe avocado for her today, tho-I think she thought she was in heaven!! lol-she TORE a piece out of Myst's hands, who just sat there looking at her like "What just happened???"

Jen, I'm glad that she has an appetite. That's one thing that Sass didn't have after his surgery, so hopefully the meds are working better on her than they did on him. I can't wait to see what you came up with for giving her the medication, I know from experience how difficult it is when they have mouth problems. You try to be soooooooo careful NOT to bump anything & cause them more pain but there are times when you are very unsuccessful & it hurts you just as much as it hurts them.
Give her a kiss from me if she'll let you. If she won't just tell her I sent one.

Wow, her little face looked so much better in that last picture. I sure hope she is feeling much better too. She looked a little groggy in the picture too. I'm sure the Torb is helping her tremendously. Keep us posted on her progress and we're still praying for a speedy, uh, speedier recovery.

So glad Lyah is better. Maybe if you mix the meds with avocado you could load it in the syringe and she might lick it off the end if you extruded it slow enough. You wouldn't have to touch her head at all that way.

It sounds like she has the best suggie medical care in the world. I am sure she will get better faster with you caring for her. Now, who is caring for you? Try to rest as much as possible.

OUr thoughts and prayers are with you and Lyah.

Awe, I feel so special, Jen. I remember holding Lyah at SGGA.

Hey, if you get a chance, maybe you should record the sound you're talking about. May be helpful sometime to add to GC's collection of suggie sounds.

You are such a great suggie mom. I know she's in the best of hands.

Oh, Jen! Big hug2 to you and Lyah, and prayers coming your way, too, that she continues to heal. heart It sure sounds like she's on the upward mend now, but what a roller coaster ride and ordeal this has been for you both! I'll bet after she heals and is no longer in pain, her temperament will get better, too. Poor wee one. An appetite is definitely a good sign.

You are awesome! heart
