Machu has seemed to grow wide in the waist area all of a sudden. I pick him up and he doesn't seem to be in any pain of any sort... and his appetitie is good as usual. He has been on the BML since I had the last cheek infection issue, after I got him last year...and he recovered 100% and has been fine since, until now. He eats fruits and veggies and mealworms, along with his BML and hasn't showed any signs of not feeling well, just that he is much wider than Picchu right now. If it were Picchu, I would almost think she was prego, but since it is Mr. Machu, I thought I would ask my GC friends if anyone has any info for me.

I'm sorry it's taken so long for a reply.
What do you mean by "all of a sudden"? If it's in the last day or two, there could be a blockage, and/or he's bloating for some reason. Make sure he's pooping/peeing normal. If this was only a couple days, I'd get into the vet asap for a check. Two of mine...father/son...died from a blockage-neither showed symptoms until a few hours before they passed-and by then it was too late. This goes to how well gliders can hide their discomfort.

I also wanted to add that an Xray might be useful for seeing what's in there. Also, DON'T let the vet give mineral oil, only vegetable oil with gliders to prevent aspiration and lung related issues.

yes, it's been in the last couple days... Ihe had an xray before, so I'll have another one taken. what will they look for? is blockage common? what do they do for that? what is the oil for? I want to make sure they are doing everything right... I know, they are the vets, but I know you all have so much knowledge and caring, I want to go in armed with as much info from GC members as possible. thank you.

No, it's not common. But it can happen. Xray is to look for any masses or something in there that doesn't belong. When mine had it, they subqed to increase fluids, and the oil-given orally- is to maybe help whatever is in there pass thru if it can. I am not positive what else they may have tried, with mine, by the time we/they caught it, it was already too late. I do know there's nothing you can do at home for it, however. Depending on where/what and a number of other factors, there may be things they can try-I don't know if you can give a glider an enema dunno, and the vet has to make that determination, based on their findings. I do know that it is extremely serious, and the faster you can get into a vet, the better chance he has. I wish I could offer more.

I don't have any first hand experience but I can answer a few of your questions until Jen gets back.

In the x-ray they can see if there is indeed a blockage. If the glider is having a problem with pooping, the oil will help loosen unless it is a severe blockage.

Thank you... I am waiting for a call back so I can head over to the vet. I will tell them to look for blockage and about the veg. oil.

Karen, I'm here now. Sometimes the xray will show it IF it's solid enough-but sometimes it won't as well, like in the case of fecal matter causing the blockage. Babyboy's Xray came up clean, but on necropsy, he was not only horribly blocked, but his entire abdominal cavity filled with fecal matter from a tiny hole in the lower intestine. In his and his son's case (who died exactly the same way at the same age within a day of age) we think the hole was a birth/genetic defect. Regardless, Babyboy was in horrible pain when I signed the order to euthanize, as exhibited by the agonal breathing. Peek didn't seem to hurt as much, and he went under painkillers when it was too late.

oh goodness!!! I hope it's not that! I can't lose him!! is there anything else that it might be? anything they should check for? x-ray, probably bloodwork again, and re-hydrate if needed... veg. oil, no mineral oil... anything else?

Dani, with the bloating, I would assume a blockage, or close to it. You might try the simethicone baby drops (ask the vet-I'm not sure if an animal can take them, but I think they're safe) just on the off chance it's gas bloat for some reason. I wouldnt' give that until AFTER the oil, though-you want that to get thru. It's possible you can try to massage his tummy, but I wouldn't do that until after the vet has had a look. If he swallowed a piece of cloth or plastic or something, that should show on Xray, and then you can go from there. Hopefully it's not something with a sharp end, or he's constipated and backed up. How that should have come out is if something sharp is in there, and you massage it, it could perforate the intestine-don't do anything until that's ruled out. Lots of hugs, and let us know what the vet says.

The other thing mentioned was subq to hydrate.

Also, I'd go to watery fruits and juice/fruit nectars for now (better a little diarrhea, than blocked)...eliminate veggies and anything with meats-you want to loosen things up if you can. Once he's pooping, add the other back in.

Lots of hugs, and let us know how it goes.

Edit: I keep thinking I need to add something here...I'll post it if I can remember-dang senior moments!!

Hello,
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond.... Machu passed away. It has just been so painful to deal with, I haven't been able to type anyone... this is still surreal to me that I do not have him with me anymore... I just opened 2 sympathy cards, so I started bawling all over again, and decided I should try to write really quick, while I am already crying... I've been trying to deal with Machu's death, and so is Picchu, who has never been without him for her entire life. She hasn't been playing as much, I've just been trying to keep her with me more without stressing her out. I feel guilty, but I couldn't go through with the necropsy (sp?) I needed some closure, because I was a total mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so for purely selfish reasons, I buried my little Machu and had a small ceremony. I know I should have found out the exact cause of his death, for Picchu's health and for others who may have the same problem down the line... I just couldn't. Picchu has always been healthy, Machu was my problem child. Machu was my first and most loved glider... I never knew how attached I could be. It just hurts so much still, so I think I will end this message for now. If you have any advise on how to keep Picchu happy while we are in this life transition, I would appreciate any info you have. I haven't been able to make any future plans yet... just dealing with the raw emotions still.
Thanks for checking on him. I know the people at GC have big hearts, and I am glad I have friends who understand glider love.

regards,
dani

danic, I am SO sorry for your loss. cry Know, tho, that he is at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for you with the rest of our little ones.

To make an angel in your signature, go to the button that says 'my stuff' and click on "My Profile".

Then, go to your signature. Before his name, type : glangel : (without the spaces in there). But be sure to leave a space before his name, and after the second colon. Then you'll get the angel gremlin.

Click on the 'submit' button

hug2 hug2

I am devastated to hear this happened to you. There are no words to ease your pain, only time passing can help.

Please don't feel you are selfish. I would have done the exact same as you. You love him and he loves you. That's all that matters. You don't have to feel obligated to do anything that is not in your heart. Please don't feel that way. HUGS

Thank you for your words of comfort and for your help with the Angel icon. I can't believe I am still bawling everytime I log on or think of Machu. I know time will help..... it's just so painful still. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone.
