It is with a broken heart that I type this post. Our beautiful Minnie passed away yesterday afternoon, just a week after our oldest lizard (Bert) passed away. We had gone away for an extended Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, and since we got back on Wednesday Minnie had been alternating between seeming a bit off and seeming ok. On Saturday night she definately wasn't ok, and looked very much like the pictures of a dying glider that Jen posted. I got out some Ensure, which she drank right down, but she wouldn't move off of my arm, so off to the e- vet we went. She vomitted some of the Ensure that she had drunk on the way to the e- vet, where they confirmed that she was dehydrated, and that they thought the cancer that took her pouch had probably spread. She was given a sub-q fluid injection and a little bit of dextrose solution. When we got her back home, Wally wouldn't let her into the coconut, and she didn't want to go into a pouch, so Gilles held her for a little longer while I set up the travel cage for her. Eventually she went into a pouch in that cage. I checked on her several times during the night, and around 6am got her out and held her on my chest. By the time that Gilles got up, she wasn't even licking Ensure off of my finger, and just lay on my chest, so back to the e- vet we went. At some point during the trip, she started bleeding from either her mouth and/or nose, and when we got there, was showing signs of neurological impairment and difficulty breathing. The vet felt that she wasn't going to make it through the day, so we decided to have them do everything they could to support her (another sub-q injection, dextrose, and pain med), and to take her home with us. Gilles held her in the glider room for about an hour while I took a nap. She had been just laying in his hands until just before I came back into the glider room, and then started to struggle around. She struggled until we were both holding her, then relaxed, took a few gasping breaths, and was gone. We got Wally out and let him see Minnie for a few minutes. I'm not sure if he realized that it was her or not - at one point he grabbed her tail and tried to pull her into the coconut and when I wouldn't let him, grabbed the grey fleece blanket that I had taken out of pulled it into the coconut. He was looking all over their cage and the glider room for her last night and again this morning.

I am so sorry to hear this. I know exactly how you feel. I guess they feel like they can cross the rainbow bridge when theyre human parents are there with them. That just proves that they knew who loved them. Your sweet Minnie will be missed I'm sure. God bless you and your family, both 4 legged and 2 legged. Your in our prayers and thoughts. Hope you can feel the big hugs!!

I'm very sorry for your loss. Know that she is healthy & is no longer suffering from Cancer at the Rainbow Bridge.
THE RAINBOW BECKONS
In loving memory of my angels who have crossed over the rainbow bridge
The rainbow has beckoned It’s calling you home To meadows and forest In which you may roam
My heart it grows heavy To think you might leave I’d be all alone then Alone then to grieve
I know deep inside me That you cannot stay The pain that you’re feeling Grows more night and day
You look at me asking In your silent way To let you go home now “Please let me” you say
You say there’s no pain there No fear and no hate Just peace and well being Once you’re through the gate
You tell me you’ll always Hold me in your heart That time and that distance Can’t keep us apart
And if I should need you At my side you’ll be Tho I cannot see you You’ll be there with me
You promise to wait at the rainbow for me To wait `til I join you Together to be
I just want to hold you And beg you to stay To ask please don’t leave me Alone on this day
Yet deep in my heart know I must let you go You must make the journey now to the rainbow
I bow down my head then The tears fill my eyes I give you my blessing My love now to fly
So fly to the rainbow And wait there for me Some day I will join you Together to be

Thanks everyone, it is still hard to believe that she is gone, that I will never see that beautiful face or long fluffy tail again, never feel her nuzzle my cheek again.
As hard as it is, we also realize that Wally's happiness has to take priority, so I've started investigating our options. So far his only reactions have been to get up a little later (although that could be to the colder weather outside - we had snow on Monday - but not inside) and to do a lot of what seems to be searching the room. I have removed some, but not all of the fleece items that may have her scent on them from the room - I'm just not sure whether it is better for him with the slow removal of her scent or to remove it all at once.
There don't seem to be many glider rescues in Western Canada, but I have contacted CanWest Sugar Gliders (possummomca) in Vancouver and Chaotic Exotics in Central Alberta so far. If anyone has any suggestions of other places to contact, please let me know. Right now we have not committed ourselves to getting another glider, but we want to have as much information on hand if that is the path we decide to follow.
Thanks Again.
