Zoe is now on Clavamox, she has a staph infection which is resistant to Trimethroprim Sulfa. She's still acting completely normal. And now my poor husband has to medicate her twice a day for the next 2 weeks. He'll do fine I know, he's just nervous about it. He'll prolly have to do Mal as well. Ok. Oh and I checked, they did do a direct smear on Rocket, it just didn't make it onto the printout I got.So he really is all clean.

Staph can be nasty stuff. Make sure everyone washes hands before and after handling the suggies. I use that Purell hand sanitizer also. I have bottles of it around in convenient places. When in doubt .....wash and/or sanitize.
Good luck,

Ok, yesterday, Zoe's poop was completely normal. Today, it's liquid. She started Clavamox last night, could this be a side effect? I will be calling my vet this morning but I wondered if anyone has any experience with this? She's still not acting like she doesn't feel well. I'll pick up some oatmeal today so I can give her a flake.

I don't know if diarrhea is a side effect of Clavamox or not. I know that my gliders have not gotten it while on Clavamox in the past. Basically, Clavamox is Amoxycillin for animals... Have you tried the BRAT diet that Sundra is using for her little one that just got over Trich's? You may want to check out her post about it and ask your vet when you call today to find out if this would be a viable option for your glider at this point... Diarrhea Elimination Diet

Clavamox is an enhanced amoxicillin, and yes, it can trigger loose stools. You can offer a few single flakes of regular quaker oats a day to help firm them up until her body begins adjusting to the meds better, but they are likely to be a little soft throughout treatment. Just about any antibiotic has the potential to do this. Make sure she's drinking plenty and staying hydrated while they're liquidy.

Ah, Clavamox is much more than amoxicillin for animals. It has Clavulanic acid added to amoxicillin. That is famous for causing nasty diarrhea. Clavamox is the single most diarrhea-inducing antibiotic I have ever used. But, it is a GREAT antibiotic at killing the nasties. Clavulanic acid binds to the enzymes that the bacteria make which inactivates antibiotics such as amoxicillin. These enzymes are what give the bacteria resistance, by destroying the med before it can kill the germ. The clavulanate allows drugs such as amoxicillin to again kill bacteria that long ago developed resistance to it. It is very helpful in resistance situations, which are becoming extremely prevalent. With the introduction of the fluoroquinolones (Baytril is one of these), the high-level resistance of Staph has grown dramatically. There has been a clear association between the use of quinolones and emergence of super-nasty staph. Back to Clavamox-induced diarrhea. There are three ideas I use in babies that you might ask your veterinarian about for your glider. The first is to use it slightly less often. Drugs were often tested and the intervals between doses set by how long it lasted in the blood stream. It turns out that a better model would be to determine how long between doses will make the patient better. So if every 12 hours cause diarrhea, but every 18 or 24 hours caused less diarrhea but still made the infection clear up, you have a better plan. The second thought is to use half as much Clavamox and add that much Amoxicillin. The end result is that you have the same amount of the antibiotic amoxicillin, but half the amount of clavulanic acid. This reduces diarrhea, keeps the antibiotic level where it needs to be to kill bacteria, and still provides enough clavulanic acid to impede the bacterial resistance strategies. Lastly, one might try adding attapulgite. In the drug store you might find a product called Diasorb. Attapulgite is an oral, non-absorbed medication that is used in the management of diarrhea. It works by adsorbing (binding) large numbers of bacteria and toxins and reducing the loss of water. Attapulgite decreases the number of bowel movements, improves the consistency of loose or watery stools, and relieves gut cramping. Since it has no medicine to decrease motility of the bowel, and is not absorbed, it is very safe. (It is ground up volcanic pumice.) Check these out with your veterinarian before employing them.

Wow! What a treasure trove of information, thank you! I talked to my vet yesterday about using the bland diet and he said that would be fine. Last night her stools were no longer just liquid, they were still soft, but far closer to normal than they had been. I offered the bland diet last night and she ad no interest whatsoever in it, so I'll see how she is this morning and maybe just offer a flake of oatmeal. If it continues to be a problem, I will talk to my vet about the other options offered. Eric FINALLY got her medicated last night after about 30 minutes. He's not an animal guy, and he's totally disgusted by being defecated upon. He must really love me Again, thanks for all the info, I will be saing it for future use!

He did it! He got her wrapped up and medicated in about 5 minutes, spent some time cuddling and giving licky treats, and got the listerine on her throat! And he's learning to coo to her the way she likes! I was so proud And her poop is normal this morning!
