I am sure this has been discussed before but I just can not put my finger on it.
Could you explain exactly what a Urine Culture would show us? It seems everyone say's to do a Urine Culture and Fecal Culture first thing no matter what illness the glider is showing.
If a glider has an Upper Respitory Infection will a Urine Culture show us anything??
thank you in advance for answering my questions.

Many glider illnesses are actually caused by one of two primary problems:
1) bacterial infection (which oft-times will show up with a urine culture)
2) parasitic infection (which will show up with fecal float and smear)
That is why these are the two most commonly recommended tests for suggies. They seem to be more prone to these infections than domesticated animals and therefore it is important to make sure that if they are showing signs of illness that one of these is not the primary culprit. Too treat secondary symptoms but not determine the primary cause doesn't do much good.

When you do a culture of anything (in this case, urine), it's basically taking a small sample and then putting it in an ideal condition for bacteria to grow. Most common, it's put in a petri dish, with a growth substrate, like agar. You are then able to tell what the infection is by allowing the bacteria multiply. It's easier to see hundreds of bacteria as opposed to a smaller sample.

Ok so it is a good idea to do a Urine Culture for just about any type of infection??
Also has anyone ever heard of the vet doing a nasal culture for Upper Resp. infection?
Seems like an aweful tiny nose to be putting even the tinest swab up!
What other tests could be run to find out why Magoo keeps getting an Upper Resp infection? He had 2 X-rays and they looks good. lungs were clear. Has been on Baytril for 14 days and he is still sneezing/coughing a little bit.

Thank you everyone.

So would a urine C&S and a fecal C&S show different things, or would they both show what the infection is? And how do you go about getting urine for a culture when the subject "won't give"?

Have you looked at his teeth? I know when my Sassy first started to show symptoms of his peridontal problems it was him sneezing continually that I noticed & took him to the vet for. It was only after he had been on baytril for 2 weeks without a change in his symptoms that we looked at his teeth & found the cause of the problem.

You won't learn anything with a stool culture. Unless relentless diarrhea or bloody diarrhea is suggesting some overgrowth, and given the cost, I wouldn't bother.

Urine culture MIGHT recover a urinary tract pathogen.

Neither will provide an answer as to what is causing a systemic infection, or targeted infection like an abscess, pneumonia, or soft tissue infection. Blood culturee is the single best test for systemic sepsis, but it is not easy to get and culture results are too slow to direct therapy the first few days.

Schlep is right. Urinalysis, and Urine CULTURE are not the same thing. A urinalysis will check for infection, and the culture of bacteria present will show what is there if there is one, and what meds those particular bacteria are susceptible to. As far as head/lung infections, though, unless the body is shedding a large number of white cells from a large infecion it isn't useful for much outside the urinary/bowel, lower intestine, reproductive tract in a glider-except to show that an infection is there SOMEwhere because of the white blood cells (the body's infection fighters, that are shed when their function is complete). It's recommended because those are the areas that most frequently cause problems, and if you know something is wrong, but not what, it's the first, and easiest, place to look, especially in the absence of other symptoms.

The UA or urinalysis shows several interesting things. Protein may indicate kidney injury, and casts in the urine are more specific for glomerular disease in the kidney.

Glucose of course implicates diabetes. I still haven't seen a confirmed diabetic glider. Ketones may indicate fasting, starvation or diabetes.

White cells and leukocyte esterase implicate infection.

Urobilinogen can be elevated in liver ailments.

Red cells can be related to trauma, infection, kidney disease, coagulopathy (abnormal clotting - which may also implicate the liver), tumors, stones and others.

As Jen noted, a urine culture is all about infection.
