JenJen here is the link to Darcys Diet you should be able to find all your answers it there. I have had my gliders on it for a few months now and love the outcome so far. Dont worry about their vitamin intake as much and their coats are looking very fluffy and full and their personalites shine! Bookmark the site, its nice to go to every now and than just to make sure you dont get off track. Or at least, that is why I go back every now and than!!
And I put mine in the cage frozen. It is thawed and gone by morning time. I personally use the High Protein Wild Berry Ensure!

My ice cube trays fit one tablespoon of Ensure/BML also. Just use a measure spoon to dole it out and remmber to put two cubes in for two gliders and it should equal out fine.

I believe the generic versions are nutritionally very similar if not exactly the same as the brand name Ensure. However, even though I cannot taste a difference, Darcy can, and he won't touch any of the cheaper versions
I try to catch it on sale and clip coupons.

The High Protein and High Calcium are also High Sodium: 290 vs. 200mg per 8 oz bottle. I prefer the Regular or Light, and add 3/8 tsp pharmaceutical Calcium Carbonate as it does not settle out as quickly as RepCal (JurassiCal also stays in suspension longer than RepCal.)

Interesting tidbit: I remembered the bottle of Ensure I keep in the Jeep in case of emergencies (I have a whole little glider emergency kit, including a small glider-proof cage, pouch, first aid stuff, etc.) It has been in there since December, here in Central New York. I opened it up and yep, it had separated. Instead of a homogenous opaque ice-cream texture, it was part translucent tan and part white, in ice crystals. I shrugged and thawed it out, shook it, and it returned to normal, completely indistinguishable from a fresh bottle. But, I drank it instead of giving it to the gliders, because it had been frozen and thawed so often, yes, it's supposed to be OK, but still ...

[:"CC6699"]I accidently bought the Ensure Plus the first time I tried the diet. I bought 12 cans of it. I figured I would use it through and start with regular when I ran out. Well, I have run out of it.. but Brandis is a little fatty! My other gliders have gained weight, which I wanted them to do, but Brandis more than the others. Will giving them the regular ensure this time around help even out the weight?

All my gliders are eating their fruits, veggies, and protien, I am also giving the correct amounts of ensure each night. [/]

My gliders dont eat all their fruits and veggies, but the ensure is usually gone...its just so hard to monitor whos eating it and whos not...theyre all active just the same, so Im assuming all is going well.

This is a long topic but very intresting. I do have a question though. I have read about how the gliders coats are getting shinyer(is that even a word?) and how they are more active but are they gaining weight as well? I have a couple gliders that are overweight and I am trying to find the right diet for my crew and just want to make sure that they would not gain anymore weight if I choose Darcy's diet.

If they are getting fat, try giving them less Ensure, or offer the fruits & veggies an hour or so before the protein and Ensure. The Ensure Light is another option. And sorry, but I don't know of any way to definitively tell who is drinking how much, unless you handfeed them individually (as I do with Darcy, to keep his wife and son from overindulging.) On the up side, this is great for bonding

PS --yes, "shinier" is a word

Hotspur has yet to clean up even half a tablespoon a night, (I've had him since June of 2002) and he's the one who does 3-5 miles a night, with a record of 8.2. Yes that's miles, on an odometer calibrated by Transoniq for the 11-inch wheel. He is 120gm, and very muscular and athletic.
So yes, as far as my experience goes, even half a tablespoon seems to provide plenty of all the necessary nutrients.

If so how much and is that supposed to be the protien part of it as opossed to the chicks or mice? And how often is that every night? Does any one use Vita Glider I have that as the calcium supplement to sprinkle on the fruit every other day and is that ok other then the human calcium supplement or the other one that was mentioned?

Ok...I was using repcal with the ensure...but it settles to the bottom too fast so I was at target today and couldnt remember what type of calium i was supposed to get and if it was supposed to be tablets or liquid...so I got the target brand of calcium citrate, youre supposed to compare it to citrical. a serving size is 2 tablets that have 400 mg of calcium. Please let me know if I got the right stuff before I open it, and how I would use it...break it up? or will it dissolve or what? thanks in advance!

You probably need to email Donna about this if you want a quick answer. She may not check in at GC on a daily basis.

Donna's recommendation was for Ruger calcium powder.

Liquid calcium would be ideal for this particular problem!!!

Sorry, I can't help you with the question about whether calcium citrate will dissolve or not. Someone else will have to offer insight on that question.

I would not use VitaGlider with Darcy's diet!!! As I remember the label, Vita Glider also has some vitamins in it. Since the vitamins in Darcy's diet are provided by the Ensure, adding extra vitamins through the use of the Vita Glider might be a problem. I would try to follow the diet exactly and use only a pure calcium supplement like the Ruger powder.

Thanks Randy. I was looking for the rugers one..even on the net and couldnt find anything...Do you think they'd have it at target? Cuz I'll just take the ones I bought back and get the Rugers instead. I think the liquid kind would be best also, but not sure what type to get? How much calcium should be added to 1 can of ensure? thanks.

I don't remember exactly. Somewhere in this thread or in the earlier "PART 1", the amount is mentioned. This is the link to "PART 1"

The calcium Donna uses, the Ruger's, is ordered through your pharmacy. It may be a different brand, but is powdered calcium. Problem is, you have to purchase a case = expensive. Donna has recommened using Jurassical, which can be purchased/ordered from most local pet stores at a fair price.

I, too, bought calcium citrate pills. They were VERY hard to crush and beat to powder. Once I finally got them crushed and added it to the Ensure, the calcium sank like a stone. Jurrasical seems to distribute well and little to no settlement.

I also looked into liquid calcium but was told not to use it. Unfortunately, I can't remember why.....

Krystal uses calcium citrate tablets, I don't know how (if?) she gets the resulting crushed powder to dissolve. Even if it does not completely dissolve, if your gliders lick the bowl clean,it doesn't matter.

If you can't get Ruger's and prefer US Pharmaceutical grade calcium carbonate to snake-grade Jurassical, try your pharmacy for chewable, unflavored calcium carbonate tablets (I believe they are sold as an antacid). They crush easily and dissolve well (according to the pharmacist) and what does not dissolve is mostly binders. Ask for the ones that contain 260mg elemental calcium, and use one and a half tablets per bottle or can of Ensure. (To break a tablet in half, press down on opposite edges on a hard surface.) Crush between two tablespoons. At the pharmacy I pestered for this information, 100 would cost less than two dollars.

Thanks youre the best! Do you think they have those at target? Besides Target being my favorite store, its much closer than the grocery store is. Also, I noticed you said your gliders wouldnt eat the 'generic' brand of ensure...lol my gliders wont even eat all of it...and dont they usually eat IT ALL?? I think I may try getting the reg. brand in a diff flavor , like the berry kind...even though its a few dollars more, its not like I have to buy it everyday. Thanks for all the responses!!

Actually, five of my seven gliders do not drink an entire tablespoon of Ensure each per night --one even insists on being handfed. The other two are strictly rationed, as they would cheerfully turn themselves into furry gray tennis balls, even on the Ensure Light.
One tablespoon per glider is probably too much if they are finishing it all off every night. One of the exotics vets at Cornell said Ensure is too rich to feed daily to healthy gliders. Her concern is with obesity and its attendant health risks. (The other two vets there were fine with it, as is my vet.)
Watch to make sure your gliders do not get fat.
If they seem to be gaining weight and don't need to, cut back on the Ensure and/or try the Light version.
It's a good idea to get an accurate scale and weigh them at least weekly, and keep a journal of their weight, eating habits, and behavior. (If nothing else, you can laugh at how their likes and dislikes change!)

The Wild Berry flavor went over well here, but be aware it has a much higher sodium content.

If Target has a pharmacy, they should have some sort of chewable calcium carbonate tablets. Try taking a photo of your SG and ask; most pharmacists I've encountered are amused to deal with animals, especially cute ones.

I already have a chunker his name is Gusgus from cinderella, lol. He was fat before I got him. My poe is starting to get boobies...but this was all before ensure. Im sure ensure will just make them more fat. so I guess off to the grocery store I go...to get ensure light. Thanks bunches! OH...when I take my gliders to the vets, the weigh them there, but...I dont have a scale of my own, do you know where I can find an affordable but good scale? thanks.
